The Utah Jazz had two lottery picks in the 2011 NBA draft and with their second pick they selected shooting guard Alec Burks from the University of Colorado twelfth overall.
The 19-year-old sophomore gives the Jazz some much needed depth at shooting guard as their starter Raja Bell is 34 years-old. Burks is strong driving to the basket and smoothly goes left or right which is unusual with young players, and because of this, he is an excellent shot creator. Burks weakness is his jump shot because of his poor three-point shooting and a tendency to rely on long two-pointers, but this something the young guard can easily improve upon.
“I feel like it’s getting better every day and more consistent than people give me credit for,” said Burks. “I’m going to keep working hard to get to that level where my slashing game and driving game is.”
At 6′ 6″ with a 6′ 10″ wingspan, Burks brings excellent size and length to his position and his averages of 20.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.1 steals illustrate his potential at both ends of the floor.
Burks fits extremely well on a Jazz team that needs athleticism and scoring on the wing, he should find a spot in Coach Tyrone Corbin’s rotation immediately.
