With the nineteenth pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Orlando Magic selected Andrew Nicholson of St. Bonaventure. In the past year, Nicholson had a meteoric rise, solidifying himself as one of the best college players in the nation and climbing draft boards.
As a senior, Nicholson averaged 18.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and two blocks. He dominated on a nightly basis and turned heads in NBA circles.
In the weeks leading up to the NBA Draft, many executives described Nicholson as one of the biggest sleepers in the class. He worked out extremely well and impressed teams during interviews.
The Magic worked out Nicholson early in the process, and felt that he was the best player available at No. 19. He doesn’t necessarily fill a need for Orlando, but he’s someone who can contribute from day one since he’s an experienced college star.
At 22 years old, Nicholson is one of the older players in this class, but he’s also one of the most NBA-ready prospects. He spent four years at St. Bonaventure and earned a degree in Physics.
Nicholson is a good low-post scorer with a consistent jump shot, which is why he has drawn comparisons to Indiana Pacers forward David West. Nicholson isn’t the most athletic player, but he’s able to make an impact on both ends of the court. This was a safe pick for Orlando, as Nicholson is a mature player who can step in and make an impact right away.
