(2) Duke Blue Devils
Going up against the Creighton Bluejays in the Round of 32, the Blue Devils knew they needed to slow down one man: Doug McDermott. McDermott finished with 21 points and nine rebounds, but shot just 4-16 from the field on a night where his team struggled offensively unlike any other night this season. They only managed 16 makes on 53 attempts, including a putrid 2-19 shooting from distance as the Blue Devils moved on with a 66-50 win. The Blue Devils weren’t on fire by any stretch, but freshman guard Rasheed Sulaimon bounced back from a lackluster first game to score 21. He was the only one who could really get going, luckily the Blue Devils made 28 trips to the free throw line and converted 21 of them. In the Sweet 16 against the Michigan State Spartans the Blue Devils have to be ready to really battle upfront against one of the most athletic and talented frontlines in the country. The three ball will have to be falling in order for the Blue Devils to move onto the Elite Eight.
(3) Michigan State Spartans
Gary Harris was red hot from three early on and the Spartans defense was solid throughout as they were able to eliminate the Memphis Tigers in the Round of 32 70-48. Harris finished the game with 23 points on just nine shots. Once again the Spartans really had their way with the opposition on the glass, outrebounding the Tigers 41-25. Adreian Payne posted up a double-double of 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. The Spartans’ defense will really be tested against the Blue Devils. They cannot let Sulaimon and Curry get hot. They have to be able to slow down one of them. The Spartans would be wise to attack Mason Plumlee early and often and see if they can get him into foul trouble. Keith Appling suffered an injury against Memphis; he’s saying he will definitely play, but his status is definitely something to keep an eye on. The Spartans need him to win.
HOOPSWORLD’s pick: Michigan State. Both teams will be well prepared by their Hall of Fame coaches, but in the end the Spartans’ frontline will wear down the Blue Devils’ and help lead them to the Elite Eight.
