2011 NBA Draft Eve Notebook

Here’s a little taste of the latest rumors, buzz, analysis, and a little bit of reality 24 hours before the 2011 NBA Draft.
Irving Likely Top Pick: As has been the general theme for the last day-and-a-half or so, the Cleveland Cavaliers seem to have settled in on Duke point guard Kyrie Irving as the top pick on Thursday. His foot injury isn’t an issue, the Cavaliers have a need at point guard, and Irving is generally considered the top pick in the draft.
They have talked about moving up to #2 (Minnesota) or #3 (Utah) using the #4 pick and something else as bait, but as of right now it seems most likely they will make the #4 pick themselves. But who will they take?
They want Arizona forward Derrick Williams, but he won’t be there. If the Wolves pass on him (if they keep their pick it will be Williams or center Enes Kanter), the Utah Jazz will not. Kentucky point guard Brandon Knight has been linked to the Utah Jazz for a while now at three, but they will take Williams in an instant. If the Wolves take Williams and Utah takes Knight, the Cavs seem to be in line to take Kanter.
If both Kanter and Williams are off the board, it gets a little more murky. They like Jonas Valanciunas, but his buyout may be a turnoff. Jan Vesely may also be the pick.
Walker Falling? UConn point guard Kemba Walker doesn’t have a floor yet. If the Toronto Raptors don’t choose him at #5 – and the latest buzz with the addition of head coach Dwane Casey has them looking to get bigger defensively – he may fall.
Washington has no need for a guard. Sacramento might, but they haven’t seemed overly excited about Walker. Detroit is likely to go big. The Charlotte Bobcats may also go big. After that, Milwaukee and Golden State don’t see Walker as an upgrade, and if Utah chooses Knight at three they won’t take another guard at 12.
Phoenix? Houston? Indiana? Philly? New York? Washington again? Charlotte again? Minnesota? Portland? Those are each of the teams making picks in order following Utah at 12. Each of them seem to have a solid point guard until you get to Charlotte at 19. It’s unlikely they would pass on Walker again, but you never know. Minnesota just signed Ricky Rubio.
That leaves Portland. It’s unlikely Walker could actually fall to 21, but it is likely one of those teams higher than Portland would be willing to move their pick to a team who really wanted him (and, reportedly, Portland is one of those teams).
Where will Walker get picked? Nothing near definite yet, but it’s somewhere between 5 and 21. How’s that for clarity?
Hill, Not Parker: According to Jonathan Givony of Draft Xpress, the San Antonio Spurs are dangling backup point guard George Hill to get a pick in the late lottery – not All-Star Tony Parker.
“NBA sources say San Antonio has offered George Hill to Milwaukee (#10), Golden State (#11) and Utah (#12) in exchange for their pick,” he wrote on Twitter.
{AUTHOR_BOX}So far they haven’t had any takers, mostly because – as mentioned above – the Bucks (Brandon Jennings), Warriors (Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis), and Jazz (Devin Harris) aren’t going to trade their lottery pick for someone who won’t start for them. Plus, each of those teams is over the cap, so they would have send out something anyway.
Hill makes $1.2 million this and is under contract for one more at $2.1 million. He averaged 11.6 points and 2.5 assists this past season for the Spurs.
There are teams who have interest in Hill and think he could become a starter, but those are not the same teams willing to give up a lottery pick for him.
Andre Miller: Rumors persist that the Portland Trail Blazers are willing to move their starting point guard. Miller counts for $7.3 million this season and $7.8 million next season. Next year’s salary is fully unguaranteed if Miller is waived by June 29th, making it very similar to a team option. The difference? Miller’s contract can be traded and then wiped off the books by the acquiring team. With a team option, the option would need to be invoked before he was traded, guaranteeing the salary for next season.
The rumors regarding Miller are very non-specific. With no other experienced point guards under contract for next seasons (Patty Mills is eligible for restricted free agency and Armon Johnson was inconsistent as a rookie), any move of Miller would have to return a starter. And for the move to make sense, that starter has to be considered as good or better a fit as Miller. If he’s not, then why bother when Miller meshes so well?
One rumor, also vague but persistent, has the Blazers interested in moving up in the draft to acquire Kemba Walker. That could happen, but the Portland Trail Blazers are not a team who will start the season with a rookie point guard. With LaMarcus Aldridge, Marcus Camby, Gerald Wallace, and Wesley Matthews – with Nic Batum and Brandon Roy off the bench – this is a team planning to have success now. They can’t take the time to break in a rookie and hope he’s the right fit.
None of this says Miller won’t be moved – these are just some things to keep in mind for the team before it happens and for fans if it really does happen.
