2013 NBA Draft – #13: Kelly Olynyk

With the 13th overall selection in the 2013 NBA Draft, the Dallas Mavericks chose Gonzaga center Kelly Olynyk, though they did so knowing they had a trade in place to send him to the Boston Celtics for two second round picks as well as the 16th overall pick in this draft.
With the 16th pick the Celtics chose Lucas Nogueira, who was briefly the property of the Mavericks, who then traded him to the Atlanta Hawks for the 18th and 44th picks, with Jared Cunningham also going to Atlanta.
The Mavericks are dead set on signing at least one All-Star free agent this summer, with Dwight Howard as their primary target. Ideally, they would like to have to cap space to offer Chris Paul a max deal, as well.
With that in mind, they were working hard to move this pick altogether to make sure they wouldn’t have to commit any guaranteed money to the first round pick.
The Mavs were hoping to pair this pick with forward Shawn Marion, who is owed roughly $9 million next season, to open up considerable cap space, but for now they will settle for moving the first rounder as step one in their pursuit of maximum cap space before free agency starts in July.
