2013 NBA Draft – #14: Shabazz Muhammad

With the 14th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, the Utah Jazz selected Shabazz Muhammad, a shooting guard out of UCLA.
Muhammad’s draft rights will be sent to the Minnesota Timberwolves as a part of a trade for point guard Trey Burke, who Minnesota drafted for Utah with the seventh overall pick.
Muhammad received a lot of negative criticism during the pre-draft process as questions arose about his character and conditioning. However, the Timberwolves were able to look past those issues and still select him in the lottery.
The shooting guard position has long been a weakness for the Timberwolves. Muhammad will have the opportunity to come in and compete for a starting spot. During his lone season at UCLA, Muhammad averaged 18 points and six rebounds while leading the Bruins to a Pac-12 regular season championship.
At this time last year Muhammad was regarded as one of the top draft prospects in the country and a viable threat to go No. 1 overall. Although he fell from that discussion, he’s still one of the most NBA ready players in this draft thanks to his scoring ability, defensive intensity and work ethic.
The Timberwolves entered a new era this offseason with former head coach Flip Saunders taking over as general manager, replacing David Kahn. He’s looking to help guide the team back to the playoffs for the first time since 2003-04, when he was still the head coach.
