In Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks have selected one of the most intriguing players in the entire draft. At 6’9 with a 7’3 wingspan, Antetokounmpo is an athletic Greek small forward that has had scouts salivating for weeks.
“First of all, I want to thank my family, my mother, my brother, my father, my team, my coaches,” Antetokounmpo said. “I still don’t believe this is happening. I can’t describe how excited I feel to get drafted in the first round by the Milwaukee Bucks. It’s a dream come true. But this is not the end. It’s only the beginning, you know, to a very long road that maybe some day will give me the opportunity to make my NBA team successful. But I know I’m not ready, but I have a lot of work ahead of me. But I’m not afraid. I will give everything in the court, in the gym. And I will prove to the Milwaukee Bucks that they made the right choice. And then I want to thank my agent for the work a lot for all of this, for the draft, for everything.”
The first international player with no NCAA experience selected in this draft, the first question about this raw prospect is whether or not he’ll actually play in the NBA next season. Because he’s the youngest player in the draft at only 18 years old, there was plenty of speculation that he would need to be stashed overseas for another year or two to season properly, but in the days leading up to the draft his camp apparently made it known that Antetokounmpo wants to play for his new NBA team immediately.
That, apparently, scared off a lot of lottery teams who loved his upside but needed more immediate help.
No question, this young man is a project, which could signal a rebuilding on the horizon for the Bucks. With possibly the entire backcourt (Monta Ellis, Brandon Jennings and J.J. Redick) headed out of town in free agency, the Bucks needed to find someone to help start a potential rebuilding process.
Antetokounmpo, in a few years, could pay off huge dividends for them.
