With the 19th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Sergey Karasev out of Russia. The 6’7 19 year old averaged 16.1 points per game during his 2012-13 Russian league season.
Although some draft boards had Karasev going to the Minnesota Timberwolves, where fellow Russians Alexey Shved and Andrei Kirilenko currently play. “I want to be like him” (Alexey Shved), Karasev told ESPN. “Maybe even bigger than him”.
Cavaliers GM Chris Grant has been high on Karasev and believes that his shooting stroke and ability to distribute the basketball could earn him a spot on the Cavs roster next season. Karasev’s agent believes that although his client is under contract with Russian Superleague team BC Triumph Lyubertsy for next season, he will be able to join the Cavaliers at the start of training camp.
C.J. Miles and Wayne Ellington are the only Cavaliers wing players with guaranteed contracts for the Cavaliers next season. With Karasev, the Cavs could provide Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters with another player who can spread the floor and create space for easy layups. While shooting is Karasev’s strongest attribute on the court, he managed to only shoot 31 % last season. He is a project that the Cavaliers front office believes is worth the investment.
