The Utah Jazz have selected Louisville center Gorgui Dieng with the 21st pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.
Dieng overcame the dreaded label of being ”red-flagged” in the pre-draft process because of potential knee injuries to still get picked in his range because of his tremendous defensive ability.
The athletic big man was the defensive anchor of the 2013 NCAA Champion Louisville averaging 9.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game while displaying an impressive ability to improve every season of his three year college career under Head Coach Rick Pitino. While having a skinny frame at this point in his career, the 6’11” center’s athletic ability allows him to run the floor with ease and displays a soft touch around the rim. Another skill separating Dieng from the rest of the crop of athletic big men in this year’s draft is the ability to knock down the 15 foot mid-range shot much like Oklahoma City Thunder shot-blocker Serge Ibaka.
Dieng has gained a great reputation of having a tremendous work ethic and ability to learn, which should overcome the knock that he is old for his junior class at 23, scaring many teams away that he’s peaked.
Dieng is still very raw despite his age, but signs of improvement in college and his constant high energy will be loved by any coach in the NBA and is a player every team would love to have on their team coming off the bench as a defensive presence.
