With the 22nd pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, the Brooklyn Nets selected Mason Plumlee.
The former Duke big man will step in and be ready to contribute right away on a Nets team that is going all-in for next season. Earlier in the day, Brooklyn made headlines due to discussions with the Boston Celtics that may net Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry.
Now, the Nets have also added a very talented center to their rotation. The 23-year-old had a very successful collegiate career with the Blue Devils, which culminated in him averaging 17.1 points, 10 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.
He is high-flying big man who rebounds the ball well and can get up and down the floor quickly. He has improved his low-post game in recent years and emerged as a very good finisher around the basket.
Plumlee has some work to do at the next level. He must improve at the free throw line, where he still leaves too many points. He also turns the ball over too much. Also, he’ll have to put on some weight and get stronger to match up with NBA-level centers.
Plumlee doesn’t have a ton of upside, but he’s an NBA-ready big man who will be able to strengthen Brooklyn’s frontcourt, especially since they’ll likely be giving away Reggie Evans and Kris Humphries among others in their trade with the Celtics.
