The Detroit Pistons continued Thursday evening’s theme of surprising selections by taking Kenatvious Caldwell-Pope eighth overall, adding to a really interesting young core that very much needed some scoring punch.
“My heart is just racing right now,” Caldwell-Pope said. “I’m happy I got selected eighth overall in the first round by Detroit. Right now I’m proud of myself, man, and I’m just proud ‑‑ my family is proud of me as well.”
Caldwell-Pope, a 6’5 shooting guard out of the University of Georgia, was one of the strongest scorers of the draft class, averaging 18.5 points per game in his sophomore season with the Bulldogs. He’s easily one of the best shooters in the draft and has good enough range to knock it down from pretty much anywhere on the floor. He shot 37.3% from three last season and has proven that he knows how to carry the offensive load for a team.
For the Pistons, the selection makes a lot of sense. While there were plenty of people that expected the Pistons to draft Michigan guard Trey Burke and keep him in-state, the Pistons instead opted for a more traditional shooting guard, something that shows the organization’s confidence in Brandon Knight as a point guard. It also paves the way for the team re-sign Jose Calderon so that they can roster a more traditional point guard and play a whole slew of different combinations featuring all three guards.
“I bring offensive game and a defensive game,” Caldwell-Pope said. “I can defend around the perimeter and also just know Brandon Knight from playing AAU against him. He’s a great point guard. He’s going to lead the team. I know that going to Detroit and looking up to either him or some of the older players that’s been there. It’s going to help me.”
After grabbing frontcourt studs the last two years in Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond, the Pistons get themselves a young scoring wing, which was something they really needed. Detroit’s young core got a little bit better on Thursday night.
