With the fourth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Syracuse sophomore Dion Waiters in something of a surprise move. It was assumed the Cavaliers were hoping that shooting guard Bradley Beal would slide to them, but when he wasn’t available, they took the next best scoring guard available.

Where Waiters was going to end up had become a hot topic after he pulled out of the Combine and refused to workout for individual teams ahead of the draft. However, Waiters does fill an immediate need in Cleveland and provides Kyrie Irving a strong running mate to develop with.

In two seasons, Waiters never started in Syracuse, but in his sophomore year he became instant offense off the bench putting up 12.6 points in just 24.1 minutes a game. A very physical player who can finish through contact, Waiters is someone who can get his own shot and will bring some offense punch to Cleveland.

Waiters is a bit undersized for the two-spot and measured out at just 6’4″ in shoes. A classic streak shooter, he has shown questionable shot selection at times and will continue to jack up shots even when they aren’t falling. He also made some questionable decisions about his conditioning as a rookie in college, but the Cavaliers are counting on the improving maturity witnessed as a sophomore.

While the Cavaliers may have future moves that impact on their selection of Waiters, the 20-year-old fits in nicely on their current roster and could even be their starting shooting guard at the start of next season.
