8 NCAA teams on cusp of top 25

USA TODAY Sports highlights notable snubs on the preseason Coaches Poll, released Thursday afternoon.
These teams all received votes and enter the 2013-14 season with serious top 25 potential.
Creighton (87 votes): The Bluejays might be the most significant snub of the preseason Coaches Poll. If No. 16 Wichita State can make the cut, consider the fact that Creighton beat the Final Four-finishing Shockers in both the Missouri Valley regular season and tournament championships last season. Perhaps the ‘Jays’ new Big East schedule dissuaded away voters. But if there ever was a season to transition from a mid-major league to a power conference, Creighton couldn’t have timed it any more perfectly. The Bluejays bring back their nucleus from a 28-win club, including two-time All-American Doug McDermott, who opted to return for his senior season. Then, the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to “glue” player Grant Gibbs.
Tennessee (73 votes): After an NCAA tournament snub that coach Cuonzo Martin labeled a “lack of respect,” Tennessee’s mission to get to the NCAA tournament for the first time since the Bruce Pearl era shouldn’t be difficult with the return of NBA-ready Jordan McRae — a versatile 6-6 shooting guard with SEC player of the year potential — leading an experienced, deep roster. McRae returns for his senior season as one of three starters, and Tennessee brings back Jeronne Maymon from injury and welcomes Memphis transfer Antonio Barton to replace departed Trae Golden at point guard.
Baylor (102 votes): Baylor’s NIT championship was a byproduct of a late-surging team that won six of its final seven games, including a 23-point rout of Kansas in March and a 20-point win against Iowa in the NIT championship. That elite level of play was missing during the regular season under the NCAA tournament committee microscope, as the Bears suffered three-game skids twice during Big 12 Conference play. Now, the Bears have their sights on other hardware and plan to use last season’s finish as a confidence boost heading into 2013-14 returning one of the best front lines in the country with twin towers 7-1 … [For more on 8 college basketball teams on the cusp of the top 25, click here.]
