Post-Game: Portland Wins Big
Date Posted: 3/26/2009 11:30:00 PM   By: Wendell Maxey
If Portland was ever going to show they are a playoff team, it was Thursday night against the Phoenix Suns.

The Blazers did their best Suns impression – complete with a 129 point performance – easily heeding the words head coach Nate McMillan shared with the team prior to tipoff.

"I told the guys before the game that we were either going to play our way into the playoffs or our way out," McMillan said.

"And I thought they responded to show that they were ready to take control."

On a night when LaMarcus Aldridge turned in a season-high 29 points and Rudy Fernandez shot his way into a career-best five three pointers, the Suns simply showed their age. They are now 0-10 on TNT this season. Actually, 0-11 if you count the preseason. The old legs couldn't keep up, leaving Phoenix no other choice but to applaud a young Blazers team on the rise towards the postseason.

"I like their team a lot," Suns point guard Steve Nash admitted. "They've got youth, depth, a lot of big guys and obviously they have Brandon (Roy, who is especially tough."

Even Shaq couldn't help but be impressed.

"The good thing about this team is they are young and can grow together."

However, minutes earlier, Shaq shot straight from the cuff. Always good for a great quote, Shaq commented about his exchange with Blazers center Joel Przybilla – with both drawing double-technical fouls in the second quarter after Przybilla confronted Shaq about throwing a ball in his face during a foul call- and of course, Greg Oden:

"No," Shaq said when asked if he could share about his conversation with Przybilla that landed them both T's.

"He said I threw the ball at him and I said, yeah. That's what I did. So what? Do something about it. I'm not much of a talker."

When asked if he could receive a fine for admitting he "threw the ball" at Przybilla, Shaq quickly corrected himself.

"I didn't throw it. I dropped it. Hey, it doesn't matter to me - whatever they do. It's been done before. You move on. I just dropped it. He was in the way. If he wouldn't have flopped and been on the floor, he wouldn't have been down there."

You don't like the floppers do you, asked one reporter.

"No. It just shows you are giving in. The referees are probably going to go for that every time. You've got to now (flop). It's the only way you can stop a person. It's kind of crazy the refs go for that."

So what did Shaq think of Oden?

"I don't. I'm a Shogun. You can't ask me about a low level ninja. I still have to worry about Yao Ming, Dwight Howard."

Hard to beat a good Shaq quote.

Even after a loss in Portland's dojo. Shudder to think what the big fella would have come up had Phoenix won their seventh-straight. Instead, it's back to the fountain of youth with a prayer to stay alive out West.

Pre-Game: Shaq Show In Portland
Date Posted: 3/26/2009 9:34:00 PM   By: Wendell Maxey
Out of all the people you expect to see lounging in the training room at the Rose Garden, Shaq has to be last on the list.

Yet a good hour before Portland hosted Phoenix – on national television nonetheless – there was the big fella yucking it up with Brandon Roy, as Roy was received some fine tuning before perhaps one of the Blazers most important games in their remaining contests at the Rose Garden.

Either way, this game won't disappoint, especially with the way Phoenix –winners of six-straight – is playing and the Blazers trying to bounce back from a tough loss to Philadelphia.

Portland is busy trying to stay healthy. Nicolas Batum (shoulder/ankle) will start tonight minus being a bit gimpy, while Travis Outlaw will wear a splint to protect the right pinky finger he dislocated against the Sixers on Monday.

Aside from the Suns fighting for the final playoff spot out West, expect to see Shaq pull out the stops during pregame introductions.

Sounds like a little running rivalry with Cleveland's LeBron James – trying to outclass on well rehearsed intros.

The mantra from Shaq: "We're not gonna let LeBron win this one."

Too bad Shaq's quote can't help him win anymore.

To all the Shaq sycophants: Come out of the closet. Admit your sexual preferences. You'll feel better about yourself. Heterosexual ("normal") men have always recognized Shaq as nothing but a big (waaaaay big) loudmouth. Only a man who's in love with Shaq would think he's worth listening to.

Why does Shaq think he needs to worry about Yao and Howard? It's not like he's going to be facing them in any playoff series, ever.

if shaq is the shogun and oden is a low level ninja, wonder what he considers dwight and yao?

Dwight and Yao are probably the "midlevel samurais" to Shaq lol.

Typical Shaq comments.... I appreciate his effort this year....He has showed that he can still play the game...even at his age.... It's just too bad he's such an obnoxious jerk.... More fans could warm up to him if he would just grow up!

All you ignorant Shaq-haters are having a field day with this one.... Shaq is still the man, no doubt. He's on a shitty team that has no other defenders and weak outside shooting. Nash is wwwaaaaaayyyy overrated and hasn't done much this year. Good luck if you think the blazers are making it out of the first round anytime in the next 4 years, hahahaha

Shogun? Oh Shackfu I get it. Wasn't that embarrasing though? Surprised he would bring it up on his own.

The amazing thing about Shaq is no matter what he say or do the world gives him a pass. He's called out his boss in public (Buss), quit on teams (Miami), mean spiritedly insulted players & coaches (Hardaway, Kobe, Bosh, Dampier, Adelman, Van Gundy), was 50% responsible for the Shaq/Kobe feud but 85% of the public blamed Kobe, and lets not forget the constant self promotion, yet no one ever calls him on it. Not the media, or the players or coaches or league officials...no one. Even among the fans Shaq has a rabbit following who excuses every insult or cheap shot he does. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Laker fan and loved Shaq when he was here...at least in the beginning. I've seen Shaq do that toss the ball in the face routine a thousand times. I watched as he would throw elbows at players that he seem to have running battles with (Dampier, Przybilla, Mutombo). Apparently Shaq doesn't like it when the opponent plays good, physical defense. Does anyone remember when, after a hard foul, Shaq swung a wild hay-maker at Brad Miller, while Miller's back was turned. Thankfully he missed. Miller never saw the the swing and turned around to see Shaq being restrained. Where I come from that's a "sucker punch". Men don't do that, they're called out for doing it. The final straw for me was when he had toe surgery in the first quarter of the season, when asked why didn't he have the surgery in the off season so he wouldn't miss games, he stated the off season was his time and the surgery was company business so he'd do it on the company's time. WHO SAYS THAT!?! If that was Terrell Owens He'd be crucified, and rightfully so. I'm not a Shaq hater, really I'm not, I watch the Suns games just to see him play and I appreciate the strong season he's having. I know he can be charming and entertaining but right is right and wrong is wrong and it's time for Shaq to be called out for some of his wrongs.
