Senior Writer Travis Heath will hold his weekly chat on Friday at 4:00 EDT. Anything NBA is fair game.
Edwin in oakland, ca: Jax and clxton to CLE, Big Z to UTAH and Boozer to GS...works under league rules. thoughts?????
Travis Heath: Welcome to the chat, everyone. Let's get rolling...
It's rare that any deal gets done, let alone a three-team deal like the one you proposed. Aside from that, the issue is that the Cavs don't want to give up Zydrunas Ilgauskas in large measure because of his $11.5 million expiring contract. If the Cavs change their stance on this, it's possible a deal could get done. Boozer was awful in Utah's opener, but all things considered, I'd rather have Boozer than Ilgauskas. So unless Utah starts free-falling and it's clear their chemistry has taken a hit, I can't see Utah pulling the trigger on such a deal since Boozer is also an expiring contract. If that happens, though, and the Cavs decide they're open to moving Z, then you have a deal that might work. Lot of "ifs" in that scenario, and it's still very early in the season. I don't expect to see teams like Utah and Cleveland panicking this early in the season.
Steve in Chicago, IL: What up Travis! Please tell me that I'm not going crazy. But did the NBA change the "Rims" this year or something? They look a little different or maybe it's the camera angle on TV. Thanks!
Travis Heath: I haven't heard about any specific, uniform changes made to the rims. I can tell you that I've heard players across the league talk about how rims are different in different buildings. This has been true for years. Some rims are more forgiving than others at least according to certain players... usually shooters. :)
Frank in Sacramento: Please analyze this GS-Hous trade: S.JAX,Maggete,Turiaf,& Claxton for T.McG,Landry & Budinger. It works under the cap. Would this be a classic.."addition by subraction trade?"
Travis Heath: Not sure Houston bites on this. Maggette's contract is going to eat up a lot of cap space long-term. Turiaf and Maggette would make over $15 million combined in 2010-11. That's not even taking into account Jackson's long-term deal. Personally, I'd rather have the $22.4 million in cap space T-Mac's contract would provide next summer. So perhaps it would be addition by subtraction for Golden State, but I think it would just be a bad deal for Houston.
Anthony in Kent, OH: Can Ryan Gomes play regular minutes at the PF spot effectively? I think he would work well between LeBron and Shaq given his overall toughness and shooting ability.
Travis Heath: I think Gomes can play regular minutes at the four in today's NBA. On certain nights he would have problems given his relative lack of length, but more nights than not he would be fine. Thing is, I'm not sure Minnesota is really interested in moving him. He's got a very reasonable contract with the next two seasons (2010-11 and 2011-12) non-guaranteed and a $4.7 million player option in 2012-13. This is the kind of contract teams that are rebuilding like to have, especially when that contract belongs to a player like Gomes. Don't see the Wolves moving him.
All that said, I agree that he would be an interesting fit in Cleveland.
Frank in : a)Does Iverson start in ME? b)Will AI's year be more productive than MANU's? c)C.Lee or Courtney Brewer? why? THANKS
Travis Heath: 1) No. The injury gives the Grizzlies the perfect excuse to bring Iverson along slowly and could justify bringing him off the bench. Not sure how long A.I. would be okay with that, but Memphis knew they were opening up Pandora's Box when they signed Iverson should they opt to bring him off the bench for any reason. That said, many people forget that at the bottom of Pandora's Box (which was actually a jar in Greek mythology) was hope. Just sayin'. :)
2) Depends what you mean by productive. Ginobili will help his team win many more games. In terms of pure numbers, I suppose A.I. could be "more productive." However, we haven't seen him play much in the last calendar year. As such, I'm going with Ginobili.
3) I'm a big fan of both players, actually. I think if Corey Brewer gets a more consistent jumper he can be a nice player. That said, Courtney Lee has already proven his value on a Finals' team last season in Orlando. I'll take C-Lee.
Mike in Ohio: I can't see why the media are making out that trading Z would be
that bad, he'll LITERALLY have no interest in playing for the
warriors so he WILL get a buyout and return the the city he's played
for his whole career. So when could it happen?
Travis Heath: I'm not sure the media is "making out that trading Z would be that bad." Instead, I think they're simply reporting that Cleveland doesn't want to part with Z at this juncture. As for Z getting a buyout if he gets traded, that's a big leap to make right now. Let's see if he gets traded first.
And let's just pretend for a minute that he gets traded and then bought out. To say he would definitely return to Cleveland is a huge leap. I'm sure there would be a number of other suitors out there for his services given the relative dearth of size in today's NBA, and I'm also sure that at least a couple of suitors would offer him a role that would be more significant than the one he now has in Cleveland playing behind Shaq. Z's ability to spread the floor with his jumper on the pick-and-pop is something that would interest a number of contending teams, especially since he would likely sign for the minimum if were to agree to a buyout.
Marcus in ohio: Would Jax actually help the Cavs that much? Parker is a similar
player, just not as good. But adding him to the lineup would have 4
guys who LOVE to shoot, only way I see it working is if he comes
off the bench to lead the 2nd unit.
Travis Heath: I think Jackson would help the Cavs in theory. He's a much more explosive scorer than any swingman not named LeBron they currently have on the roster. I think he's a significant offensive upgrade over Parker on the offensive end.
That said, I understand your concern. Jackson needs the rock to be effective and is a volume shooter. However, I don't see him coming off the bench. If he goes to Cleveland he's going to be a starter. Not sold it's a good move for the Cavs, but if Cleveland's struggles continue, it's an option that Danny Ferry will likely feel increasing pressure to pull the trigger on.
Jazzin It Up in Salt Lake: Travis, how are ya! If the Jazz were able to dangle the knicks first round pick next year along with Boozer in a trade what teams would be interested and what is our best case scenario of players we could trade for?
Travis Heath: Hey Jazz.
This is a tough question. Certainly NY's pick is a nice asset, especially if the Knicks are struggling as the trade deadline draws near. Right now, I'm hearing there is not a large market for Boozer. Moreover, the way he played on opening night in Denver didn't do anything to help his trade value. What I've been told repeatedly by people close to the situation is that Utah won't make a bad deal. They'll bite the bullet this season, pay the tax, and then let Boozer walk.
All that said, I think who Utah could get in return for Boozer and NY's pick likely depends on how certain teams start out the season. You'll likely see some teams that were supposed to contend losing ground. On the flip-side, some other teams might emerge as unexpected contenders making them all of a sudden more likely to make a deal. There are also a number of deals I think Utah could get done without giving up that #1 pick.
Chicago is still a potential destination and has a load of bigs they could send Utah's way. A package of Tyrus Thomas and Jerome James' expiring contract would work. This would allow Utah to put Millsap in the starting lineup and bring Thomas off the bench. I actually think Utah could get this deal done without giving up NY's #1, and it would make their bench a lot more athletic with Thomas.
I think Miami is a team to keep an eye on. Thing is, any deal here would likely involve Michael Beasley. Udonis Haslem and Beasley for Boozer is a possibility. Just not sure Beasley would be a good fit in Jerry Sloan's system.
At this point, there really isn't a huge market for Boozer. I think that could change, though, as the trade deadline grows closer. The situation is fluid.
Mr. Nick Erbocker in Buildings go up, buildings go down.: The Knicks weren't pretty in their opener, but Gallo hitting 7 3's and Chandler and Lee doing their thing gives me some hope. I also like what Darko is doing, and think he should start at center and he'll thrive. Hope? Thoughts?
Travis Heath: I think the Knicks have enough offensive firepower to give teams some headaches. I think the question is still how good they'll be on the defensive end. The HEAT got what they wanted offensively pretty much all night long on Tuesday. Galo can hit an open shot as can a number of other guys on the roster can. Lee is a stud, and I expect him to have another good year. As for Darko, I'm not sold yet. I need to see more from him.
For me, it all comes down to defense in NY. If the Knicks can play some defense consistently, I think they'll be in the mix for one of the final couple of playoff spots out East. If not, I think it's another trip to the lottery.
Marcos in Sacramento, Ca: Don't you think the Kings have problems with Hawes as their only legit center? I heard they were talking to Jake Voshkul. Come on! Is there a legit center out there for them?
Travis Heath: I think Hawes has a chance to be an above-average center in the NBA, but I agree that Sac could use more size. However, over half the league would like to add more size. That's just the nature of the beast in the league these days. It's slim pickings out there, so no, I don't think the Kings can do much better than a guy like Voskuhl on the free agent market at this time of the year.
John in Chicago: What are your thoughts on the Bulls team. They are pretty deep and are bigger with salmons at the 2.
Travis Heath: I loved what I saw from them last night. Young legs, very active on defense. They look deep, too, as you noted. Noah looks like he's much improved. I like Hinrich at the two more than I thought I would... at least last night. I also like the way they push the ball up the floor and try to get easy baskets. That Rose kid isn't bad, either. :)
Small sample size, of course, but I like what I see early. Interested to see how the Bulls look in Boston tonight.
Zip in Chicago: Derrick Rose seems to be on a lot of commercials now and seems more comfortable speaking to the media. What do you expect from rose this year? Allstar? Superstar? Or overrated NBA player?
Travis Heath: I agree that Rose looks more comfortable in front of the camera this season. He got some very good media training this summer.
I think Rose will strongly challenge for an All-Star berth this season. Not sure he'll make the leap to superstar, but all the tools are in place for that to happen in the not too distant future.
Bobby light in : I know its early but i called it from the start. Richard Jefferson and his 15 million is a dud. Great for nuggets fans
Travis Heath: I think it's way too early to call Richard Jefferson a dud. The Spurs always seem to start the year slowly and gain momentum as the season progresses. That's been their pattern now for years. If Jefferson is still playing like he did in the first two games come February, then you might be on to something. However, I think the Spurs will be just fine. Jefferson just needs some time to fit in with his new club.
It's really easy to overreact this time of year, and I would caution Nuggets' fans (and other fans around the league for that matter) not to jump to conclusions after just a few games. I generally want to see at least 20 games from a team before I start really deconstructing what I'm seeing in any depth. At that point, you can start to see certain patterns emerging that are meaningful.
Joe in Ohio: Could the Cavs go for Redd instead of Jax? Obviously most would
say if we wanted him we would have gotten him by now, but he
would be amazing offensively. I guess defensively he couldne a
problem. Z,Boobie+1st?
Travis Heath: The biggest issue with Redd is his contract. Dude is due over $17 million this season and over $18 million next season. Contrast that to a guy like Stephen Jackson who is due about $7.6 million this season.
Not sure why the Bucks would be interested in the deal you suggested, either. They are not going to contend this season, so Z is not going to serve any function for them. In addition, Gibson's got a long-term deal and the Bucks already have a couple of guys to man the point in Ridnour and Jennings.. This would be a give up move by the Bucks. I suppose it's not completely outside the realm of possibility after what they did with Jefferson this past summer, but I don't see it even being considered until around the trade deadline.
Dre in Greeley, CO: Hey Travis,
How about Lawson being the rookie we
need? Anyway last night our rebounding
almost killed us, any good big men we
could pick up?(I still have hope for
David Lee, even though that's likely
impossible)
Travis Heath:
Greeley in the house!
I said it this summer in Vegas when it was very unpopular to do so in some circles, I wrote it last Sunday before the season started, and I'll maintain it today: Lawson is absolutely the rookie Denver needs. He is as quick as any guard in the league and is a major "tempo-changer." He's also an extremely smart player who is a winner. What's not to like? He's still got a lot to learn, but he's a quick study.
I agree that rebounding is a relative weakness for this team. I love David Lee as well, but I think that ship has sailed. I'd love to see this team pick up a Udonis Haslem or Jeff Foster prior to the trade deadline. Not sure it happens, but those are the kind of guys I believe could really help put this team over the top.
Greg Oden in Portland, Oregon: why hasnt nate put andre miller in the starting line up yet? i do much better with him in it and also why doesnt nate let andre miller take over alittle in the 4th? we saw last night that roy cant just be the one man wonder
Travis Heath:
Great question. I would be shocked if Nate doesn't make that move pretty quickly. I know Andre failed the preseason conditioning test, but it's time to worry about winning games now and not some silly test.
Andre has missed three games during his entire 10-year career. Enough said.
Dude comes to play every night. How he peformed on some test a month ago is irrelevant.
It's time for Nate to put Andre in the starting lineup as that gives the Blazers their best chance to win.
Kenyon Martin in Denver,Colorado: what did you thing of my smart foul on oden? the heck a shaq method plus i showed to the league how dumb it was to have a inexprienced player in late in the 4th
Travis Heath:
Truth be told, I don't think Kenyon was trying to foul Oden. Kenyon is a crafty veteran who constantly tries to gain a physical advantage. He also understands that refs often swallow their whistles late in games. As such, I think he was trying to get away with a little extra. That said, I'm sure he understood that it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if he fouled Oden.
As for it being a dumb move to have Oden in the game in 4th... you can certainly make that argument. However, you can also make the argument that Oden needs a chance to get experience playing late in games at some point and the second game of the regular season isn't a bad time to have him in there to gain some experience.
R-truth aka the boss in san antonio, texas: If my bobcats struggle will wallace be traded to save money? do you think get expiring contracts for say Joel Pryzbilla,Nic batum, and patty mills? it would save money and make both clubs better
Travis Heath: I could see the Bobcats trading Wallace at some point, especially if they continue to struggle. However, it would be a huge risk for the Blazers to trade Pryzbilla. He's the team's insurance policy for Oden. Also, I think you can make the argument that he's more effective on the floor right now than Oden. Obviously, folks in Portland hope that changes soon since it would mean that Oden has matured. I'm not saying Portland shouldn't consider moving Joel at some point once Oden proves he's ready, but I think it would be far too risky to trade him now without getting another big who can contribute right away in return as part of the package.
Andre Miller in portland,or: I really cost my team last night didnt i? im ussually big in the 4th, i mean you see me in philly, and suddenly i come here and miss a huge free throw causing roy to chuck a 3 :(
Travis Heath: I've known Andre for years and like him as a player and a person. However, I've always said that Andre is not a clutch player. He's a guy you want setting someone up in crunch time rather than taking that crucial shot... whether it be a jumper or a free throw.
Stephon Jackson in Golden Nugget Casino,Nevada: As much as i am mad,I want to let you know that i will lead my team to a 7th seed....Do you think if corey maggette passes up some shots for me and gives in to the team concept that we can win more?
Travis Heath:
Sure, I think if Corey passed the ball more it would help. Problem is, that's not how Corey plays. Corey's a guy who shoots quick jumpers as soon as he sees daylight and/or puts his head down to try and get to the basket. He did that so frequently when he was a Clipper that there were nights where I thought Mike Dunleavy was going to try and choke him.
Therein lies the problem for the Warriors: Golden State has a team that doesn't fit together all that well. They have a lot of nice individual pieces, but as a whole, they just don't function that well together.
I would be very surprised if the Warriors made the playoffs this season.
The Undertaker in Death Valley: hey travishows my favorite writer doing... Do you think the lakers will once again avenge the souls of a eastern confrence team and win the holy grail known as the world championship with Ron Artest and Kobe Bryant leading the way?
Travis Heath:
Yes. The Lakers are my preseason favorites to win it all. If Bynum stays healthy and keeps playing well, I think it's a wrap. I think Artest will get more and more comfortable as the season progresses.
I would keep my eyes on Boston, though. I think Sheed was a great pickup for them. The question for the C's will be durability throughout the entire campaign. If they stay healthy I think they could give the Lakers a run for their money.
Derrick Rose in Chicago,ILL: Would you count my chicago bulls team as a sleeper team to make it to the ecf? imagine if portland makes to the wcf and the we are both in the finals!! wouldnt that be epic a match between brandon roy and derrick rose
Travis Heath:
I think the Bulls have the potential to be a sleeper, no doubt.
As for a Blazers-Bulls NBA Finals... it would be fun but I don't see it happening. I think both of these teams could make things interesting, but I don't think either team has quite enough to knock off the two or three kings of the hill in each conference as things stand now.
Air Run in NY: How 'bout dem Nuggets? Talk to me. :)
Travis Heath:
Two very nice wins against divisional opponents. Nuggets' fans should feel great about the way Carmelo Anthony is playing. I said in my chat a month ago that Melo would have a HUGE year. I needed just one day of practice to see that he was playing on a different level than I had ever seen him play. I think the other encouraging thing is once again Denver's defense. They have the ability to really lock teams down, and this is a quality that all great teams have. Combine that with Denver's ability to get to the free throw line and you have a team that will contend.
All that said, there's still obviously a long way to go. After Sunday's home game against Memphis the Nuggets go on the road for seven straight. They'll be playing Eastern Conference teams they should beat most nights on that trip. If they can go 5-2 or 6-1 on that trip that and come back home on the 13th of November and knock off the Lakers that would be one hell of a start to the season.
bill in mia: do think mike beasley can continue the point production he had in game 1
Travis Heath: He certainly has the physical ability to, although let's not forget that he scored his 21 against the Knicks, a team that isn't exactly invested in playing great defense. There have never been any questions about Beasley's talent. The challenge for him is going to involve keeping his head right for the entire season. If he can do that and maintain his focus, I definitely think he can be a 20-point per game scorer.
Toolatecrew in Dartmouth NS: Hey Travis, True or False:Firing Don Nelson would be easier and do more for the Warriors than trading JAX
Travis Heath:
In theory I like the idea. The issue is that Nellie is owed a ton of jack through 2011. Of course, Jax is due a lot of money, too, through 2013.
Here's the question I think you have to ask yourself: will Jax stay if Nellie is fired?
In other words, does Jackson's beef with the organization run deeper than Nellie?
If the Warriors fire Nelson and Jackson still wants out, I'm not sure it solves any problems for Golden State. In fact, it might even create more problems.
All that said, I think the Warriors should have pulled the plug on Nelson prior to last season. He's not a great developmental coach and doesn't have the talent to win a title in the next two seasons.
Then again, what do I know? :)
Be well, TLC.
Danny in : Wouldn't a three way trade sending Boozer to the Bobcats, G.Wallace to the Clippers, and Camby to the Jazz solve all three teams needs?
Travis Heath:
It's an interesting idea. Certainly Boozer's expiring contract would be good for Charlotte and Camby would be great as the first big off the bench in Utah. However, I'm not sure Wallace would be a great fit for the Clips.
LA was alternating Al Thornton and Rasual Butler as starters in the preseason with Thornton eventually winning the job. I actually liked what I've seen from Thornton so far, too. I think the Clips might like to keep that extra depth up-front given the injury history of their bigs, at least at this point in the season with Griffin already out. This could be a deal worth revisiting as the trade deadline gets closer, though.
Nathan in Denver: Hey man. What big is a reasonable pickup would you say with the smaller trade exception that could help them get more boards. The Blazers totally schooled them last night on the boards. Other than that a solid start for my team.
Travis Heath:
What you're looking at is a trade exception worth about $3.3 million. Trade exceptions can't be combined with other TPE's or players. So the player has to make ~$3.3 million or less.
Just spit-balling... here are some names that come to mind that would fit the above criteria:
Joe Smith, Atlanta Hawks
Chris Wilcox, Detroit Pistons
Mikki Moore, Golden State Warriors
Chuck Hayes and Carl Landry, Houston Rockets
Joel Anthony, Miami HEAT
Francisco Elson, Milwaukee Bucks
Sean Marks, New Orleans Hornets
Fabricio Oberto, Washington Wizards
Not sure any if any of these guys are the answer or not, but they could all be had with the Chucky Atkins' TPE if these teams were willing to deal. Also, it's worth noting that historically most TPE's expire prior to being used. Denver will certainly look to see what's out there, but I think the odds are always against a team finding a trade with a TPE. The only benefit a team trading with Denver would get in the deal is cash savings and/or a draft pick if Denver were to include one.
Just something to think about.
trevor in : do you think that the problem with the cavs is not that
lebron's teammates are standing around too much, but lebron
is dribbling the ball too much?
Travis Heath:
The Charles Barkley theory, huh?
I think it's a part of the problem, but I also think the team is learning how to play with Shaq. It's almost like they are trying to force him the ball at times at the expense of getting others involved. This is a common response from teammates the first time they play with Shaq. It will improve as players get used to his presence a bit more. I think it's way too early to say the sky is falling in Cleveland.
Davonte in ny: do you see the mavs beating the lakers tonight? gasol will not play and they only beat the clippers by 7 in their last game
Travis Heath: No, I think the Lakers win it... even without Gasol.
I've got ants in my pants: Hey Travis, you're a great writer for your height. Who's gonna guard LeBron tonight - Damien Wilkins?!
Travis Heath:
For my height, huh? Next time you might as well break out the "best writer pound-for-pound" cliche. :)
I think Damien will see a lot of time on him tonight. I'd expect Corey Brewer to see see some time on him as well, and perhaps even Ryan Gomes. It will, of course, be more of a team concept than anything else as is the case when trying to defend all great players.
Insane in the membrane: You have a tremendous vernacular, Travis. What's stopping Wilson Chandler from leading the Knickerbockers in scoring this season?
Travis Heath:
Regarding the vernacular... I guess I watch too much Walt "Clyde" Frazier. :)
While I like Chandler's game, I don't think he's as efficient as he could be. He shot just 43 percent from the field last season, and even though he had 21 points against Miami on Tuesday, he only made 7 of his 18 field goal attempts. If he becomes more efficient, he very well could lead the Knicks in scoring.
Brad in NY: If there is such a dearth of size in the nba, isn't it plausible to
trade eddy curry with him demonstrating a will to resurrect his
career and going into a contract year.
Travis Heath: No, because we're also in the midst of an economic crisis. Next year it might be more plausible when Curry is an expiring deal. Teams simply aren't going to trade for a guy who is dead weight on the bench and is also due about $20 million through 2011... even if he is big.
Matt in San Antonio: I know it's early, but the Celtics look tough. Good luck scoring on that D at the end of a game...thoughts?
Travis Heath: I agree. Defense wins championship, and the Celtics know how to lock cats up when it matters. The C's defense is what helped them win it all in 2008 and it will ensure they are contenders again this season... assuming good health, of course.
Carmelo Anthony in Denver, Colorado: Can I win MVP and bring a chamionship 2 Denver???
Travis Heath:
It certainly looks like a possibility based on your start to the season. To get there you're going to have to knock Kobe off the top of the mountain, though.
That's going to be one hell of a chicken fight.
Won in : I had high hopes on Clips but they dont seem like a playoffteam and BDiddy doesnt look motivated at all and how serious are DEN as contenders I think if they add some size in the froncourt they should be right there barring injury your thoughts?
Travis Heath:
Losing Blake Griffin was a huge blow to the Clips. I actually think Davis has looked pretty good, but if he gets frustrated, he's likely to check out like we've seen him do in the past. It's just two games, which means the Clips have time to recover. That said, given the group the Clippers have, a negative tsunami could level this team faster than some others. You have to believe Mike Dunleavy's chair is already warming up.
As for the Nugs, I think they are contenders. I also believe you've nailed it in your assessment. They need more length as we saw in the playoffs last season. I expect the Nugs to try and address that between now and February's trade deadline.
No one wants to come to my house in Saudi Aurora, CO: How big a message did Denver send beating Utah and Portland those first two games? Aw yeah.
Travis Heath:
I think the way Carmelo Anthony played and the way Denver defended at critical times sent a nice little message. However, it was just two games. Denver's still got a lot of work ahead of them.
TD in chicago: Travis - 13 assists for Westbrook. Can he be a pure point and how much would that accelerate this team to playoff contender?
Travis Heath: I think Westbrook can absolutely be a true point guard, and he's got a great mentor in Scott Brooks, too. In many ways, Westbrook is more of modern day prototype at the point guard position. He has good size, good strength, and amazing ups. I think many folks are going to be surprised at just how good Westbrook becomes. The fact he's becoming a better decision-maker bodes very well for the Thunder.
Baywarrior in OAK: What you think of this trade?
Boozer + CJ miles to GSW for Maggette Claxton and Wright?
Travis Heath:
Well, I know the Jazz has had interest in Corey Maggette for years, so I actually don't think it's outside the realm of possibility. Honestly, I'm not exactly sure why the Jazz has coveted him as I don't see him being a great fit in Sloan's motion offense. But obviously Sloan and O'Connor would know better than I.
So in summary, I wouldn't do the deal but the Jazz just might based on their pursuit of Maggette in the past.
Still lit in Five points, East Colfax Ave: Would a scoring title for Melo be a good thing for the Creamy Nougats?
Travis Heath:
If he wins a scoring title playing like he has the first two games, it would absolutely be a good thing. Melo hasn't been forcing very many shots at all, and he's scoring when the team needs him to. Let's not forget that he also had eight rebounds and five assists in Denver's first game, too. The only way it becomes a bad thing for Denver is if Melo starts forcing shots, which is something he hasn't been doing.
It's really paradoxical in that a couple of three seasons ago Melo was trying hard to score to prove a point. Now that he's focused on just winning, his scoring numbers are actually going up and he's scoring in the flow of the game. It's funny how that works.
Brian in Salt Lake City: Will the jazz ever start PLAYING defense instead of just TALKING about it? Like maybe tonight...
Travis Heath: They had better. It's perplexing, too, because that's always been Jerry Sloan's calling card. I like that he's allowed Utah to play faster than he has in the past, but it seems like the team's defense has suffered. There needs to be some balance there, for sure.
John in Portland, Oregon: do you think nates time is running out? his controlling approach and offensive and defensive schemes seem better made for the grizzlies then portland...Plus he runs 1 on 4 isolation plays for roy which everyone in the leagues knows about!!!
Travis Heath:
I said last season that I think Nate could benefit from turning the reins loose a bit on offense. I saw that at times during last night's game and that's when Portland was at their best. I think defensively they are in pretty good shape. Offensively, though, I'd like to see Nate turn his athletes loose a little more.
You're also correct in your assertion that the Blazers run a "four-low" for Roy quite a bit at the end of games... and sometimes for most of the fourth quarter. Even as good as Roy is that's not something that a championship team runs as frequently as Portland has throughout the last couple of seasons.
Not sure this means Nate is on the hot seat. I actually think he's still in pretty good standing. However, if the losses pile up that can change for any coach in a hurry.
Last season was all fun and games for the Blazers as they had nothing to lose. This season they have to live up to all of the hype they've generated the past couple of seasons when most everyone was talking about how good they would be in the future. All of a sudden the future is now in Portland. It will be interesting to see how they respond to that challenge since it's a challenge this group hasn't faced before.
Patty Pimplepincher in the front row: Travis, even though you're not morbidly obese, you're still a great basketball writer. When is the Birdman gonna block some shots? Any post-contract dropoff for him, or is he motivated?
Travis Heath:
Don't hold it against me for not being morbidly obese, okay? :)
I think Bird looks a little bit out of synch and I have made that comment to a number of people. He doesn't look quite as sharp rotating from the weakside. Is it specific to a post-contract drop-off? Not willing to go there quite yet. Let's see what the next three weeks or so bring.
One thing I think that is happening is that teams are accounting for his presence. In other words, teams aren't going straight at him as much as they were last season. Last season teams didn't get the memo for quite awhile with regard to how much he brought to the table defensively. This season I can tell you from talking to other teams that he is very much a part of the scouting report. Since he jumps at virtually every thing, expect to see teams use a lot more pump-fakes to get him off his feet and into foul trouble this season.
Baywarrior in OAK: MELO MVP???
He has been looking focused and has some fire somewhat like Kobe/Bron in one.
Best Pure scorer in the league right?
Travis Heath:
I've been touting Melo's scoring ability for some time and folks have called me a homer. Now the world is seeing it. There's no doubt at all in my mind that he's the best scorer in the league. Great jab-step pull-up jumper, great off the dribble, amazing one-dribble pull-up, and I could go on and on. He's an almost impossible cover. He's too quick for those players as strong as he is and too strong for those players as quick as he is. When Melo gets himself into trouble is when he starts settling too frequently for jumpers and stops taking cats inside. This season he seems to have developed a really nice balance. If that continues, he'll be in the MVP discussion.
All in and all done, folks. Thanks for the great questions and commentary. You can get at me again next week if I missed you. Enjoy the games this weekend!

posted by World, 10/30/2009 4:54:14 PM I agree Rose looks more comfortable in front of the camera. Now we just need to hook him up with Jessica Simpson to get him some ProActive! That dude must face his face with candy bars!!!
posted by East Colfax Ave, 10/30/2009 4:57:53 PM Travis - what's the story with Renaldo Balkman? There are reports of him being suspended, but it's not "official" anywhere. He was in uniform on the bench last night and in the huddle on timeouts, but you can't do that if you're suspended, right? Why is this so strange?

posted by WillieT, 10/30/2009 9:25:16 PM Trav, I agree that 'Melo has to avoid settling for bad jumpers, but I saw a lot of times last year when he would go 1 on 3 in the post and force up an awful shot. He needs to look to kick out of the post when everyone within 10 feet collapses on his drive. Of course that works better if other players are cutting to the basket or finding some open floor.
posted by Larry, 10/30/2009 10:09:40 PM Refs ruined a good game last night. 90 FTs took both teams out of their rythum, causing too much one on one and too few FGs made. Even with all those FTs no one got to 100. They have been calling games like replacement refs so far. They have short memories and a few look out of shape.
