NBA Saturday: What's Next For Marion?

Happy Fourth of July to everyone, hope you are all planning for a fun day of food and festivities. Here is some of the the latest news and rumors floating around the NBA today.

What's Next For Marion? The Toronto Raptors were rumored for several days to be a dark horse in the Hedo Turkoglu race, and it appears they have decided to go "all-in" on the 6'10 Turkoglu. To create the space needed to sign Turkoglu to the rumored five-year, $56 million deal reported yesterday, the Raptors would have to renounce the rights to Anthony Parker (who is leaning towards a deal in Cleveland), Shawn Marion (who passed on a four-year, $32 million offer from the Raptors) and Carlos Delfino (who was issued a Qualifying Offer sheet recently).

Raptors sources call it too early to say how the mechanics will work out with rumors that Shawn Marion could be part of a sign-and-trade deal through Orlando for Turkoglu, with Portland being a possible end destination for Marion. The Blazers have opened talks with Marion and Andre Miller according to sources, and are rumored to be open to a discussion with Knicks free agent David Lee. The one "named" player the Blazers have not been linked to is Paul Millsap, although sources close to his camp say there has been contact, it's just not clear if there is enough mutual interest to move things to the next level.

Turkoglu's decision to take Toronto's offer was in part about money, but mainly about lifestyle. Turkoglu and his wife Banu had their first child in March and are overly sensitive to where they will live. She was rumored to be the driving force behind staying in Orlando, and it's believed she had a lot of influence over giving Toronto a chance to make a better offer.

Stay tuned for more on this situation as this deal will likely have more parts in the coming days.

Where Are Things With Wallace? The Boston Celtics made it clear they were going to be on Rasheed Wallace's door step at 12:01am EST. Rasheed asked them not too – he has small children, and both sides agreed to meet first thing Thursday – the Celtics brought everyone but the training staff – Celtics managing partner Wyc Grousbeck, team president Danny Ainge, coach Doc Rivers and All-Stars Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.

The C's put the hard press on, and the one person said to have been most impressed was Wallace's wife Fatima. Wallace's camp told the Celtics they would be very thorough in evaluating offers and Rasheed wants to listen to everyone before making a decision. Wallace's camp says he'll meet with the Spurs and Magic sometime next week, however Magic GM Otis Smith said he did not expect Wallace in Orlando for a visit, despite rumors from Wallace's camp saying he would.

League sources say the Celtics offered their entire median exception (expected to be $5.6 million) to Wallace and said that even with that money spent they would not hesitate to continue to add pieces, that supposedly sat well with Wallace. July 8th is the earliest free agent players can sign new contracts, Wallace's camp has said they'd like to have a decision soon but have put no time table on their process.

Magic and Lil' Nate Robinson?
The Orlando Magic will likely take all of their seven days before making a final decision on whether to match Dallas' five-year offer to Marcin Gortat, who will sign an offer sheet on July 8th. Magic GM Otis Smith backed away from his claims that he'd match any offer, saying $5 million is a lot of money for a backup center.

The Mavericks' offer is rumored to include promises that Marcin would start and may include an exit clause after year three of the deal to allow Marcin to get a bigger deal if he becomes the star center the Mavericks hope he can be.

The Magic have expressed some interest in both Rasheed Wallace and Brandon Bass, but both have received sizable offers from other teams that are far greater than what the Magic are rumored to be offering. A surprising name has surfaced in the recent days with sources close to Knicks restricted free agent Nate Robinson saying he's been contacted by both the Lakers and the Magic.

NBA AM: The HEAT After Iverson Too?: The New York Knicks may not be the front runners for Allen Iverson's...

Robinson would be an interesting addition for the Magic, however it's unlikely, according to well placed Magic sources that the Magic spend their entire median exception on a single player likely taking them out of the running for Robinson unless the deal involved a sign-and-trade. Magic sources say the team would be willing to move J.J. Redick (he was initially offered to New Jersey in place of Courtney Lee) and his $2.8 million ending contract but that's not nearly enough to get Robinson in Orlando.

The reality of the situation is unless Orlando is not being honest about their desire to split their exception money up among several players, there may not be a scenario in which Robinson could end up in Orlando, they simply do not have the trade assets to make a deal work, but as Hedo Turkoglu just demonstrated, players rarely get their best offer without a threat from another team, this could simply be posturing from Nate's camp trying to drum up a deal.

Marbury And The Wizards: The New York Post's Marc Berman is also reporting that Stephon Marbury may land in Washington with the Wizards. The Celtics issued Marbury a one-year, $1.3 million offer this week which he turned down. His camp was rumored to have reached out to the HEAT and Spurs, both had expressed interest last year when Marbury gained his release from the Knicks. The Wizards could offer a median exception deal worth $5.6 million per season. The Wizards current are sitting on $75.1 million in salaries and will be Luxury Tax payers next season, so any amount they give Marbury would be subject to a dollar for dollar tax.

Toronto will 100% figure out a sign and trade for Hedo, BC has promised Marion from the begining that he would help him out with a sign and trade. Also, the Raptors would not be able to afford anyone if they didn't figure out a sign and trade because they would lose the MLE. Marion to Orland is official...BOOK IT!

Is the Marion to Orlando thing true or is it just an idea? Also, Magic shouldn't and wouldn't get nate. He is not a championship player and I would hate to see him run point off the bench. Better off with AJ. Also, even with Marion, who will backup Dwight? That is very important.

Can't we also sign a player who has already agreed to a contract as well, Mr. Kyler?

..."overly sensitive to where they live"...Are you "overly sensitive" to living in the U.S. ??? We are the center of the universe only in our own minds. It's easy to see why a Muslim family would prefer raising children in Canada to the U.S.

Marion is just 6'7 and not 6'10..

The only players that can ink contracts now are drafted or undrafted rookies - the rest must wait until July 8th... so until some one is physically signed Portland can get in the mix with anyone - the question is how many would go back on their agreements? - Thats fairly rare... Keep in mind the "reports" that Hedo agreed to terms in Portland did not come from Hedo, they came from one source in Portland that jumped the gun and several others ran with it...

gee, that sounds familiar. One source "reporting" something and you media guys running with it.

Marion might be 6'7 but he easily grabs 5+ more rebounds than Turk on any given night... dumb move by the Raptors. Not to mention it's a contract that's 4 yrs too long - do you think Bosh is really going to want to stay and play with Turk as the next go-to guy when he could be playing with Bron, Wade etc? Give me a break. Might as well flush this season down the sh*tter.

Mr Kyler, hoopsworld is a hellhole of dishonesty. You write that 'some outlets ran with the Hedo-to-Portland' story: what the hell is THIS? http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=13177 this is YOU running with it.YOU pretended you had insight.YOU failed to credit the 'outlet' that 'broke' it. And then YOU pretended to break another story on the Magic that by all respectable accounts is 100 percent false. Do you guys have no shame?

Steve, why would the Blazers want Lee or Millsap when the already have a starting PF who plays 35 mins a night??? Me no understand!!

MR. SKYLER...i love HW and always come here but lets not pretend your writers have a great knowledge of the game. And lets not pretend you have any inside knowledge. All you do is copy what other people say in their papers or what ESPN ays. I like this iste because it is all in one place but don't insult other sites for things that you also do. VEry hypocritical! When you start breaking news stories instead of being a straight blogging re-printer...you may gain some more respect from the commenters. I repeat that I still love the site.

Hoopsworld has broken plenty of stories as the original source... Plus the writers based in NBA cities have extensive knowledge of that particular team, to the very least of letting us know what a team/player may prolly be thinking, or otherwise what they think will happen, which is still much more times right on, rather than wrong. Its part of the business, you want early confirmations, you got to accept the risk of it being rethought or wrong.

I absolutely agree with PY, this site is great because everything for every team is all right here on one site together. Some writer here do have some good insight, others do not (Joel Brigham for example is great when it comes to the Bulls, he should not, however, comment on any other team). Mr. Kyler likes very much to insult the collective IQ of his readers, and that is probably the most aggravating thing here. It's all a catch 22 though. He's very good at spinning things around so he always comes out on top, no matter what the situation is. I would suggest that he try to get a writer from every NBA city so they can really focus on one team. Don't have guys doing double or triple duty. I very much enjoy being able to converse with the writers, and for the most part, they are very humble and appreciative, informative, and above all, more than willing to talk to the casual fan. I can understand Mr. Kyler being overly protective of his site, but he needs to not lose sight of the fact that this site wouldn't be nearly as successful without its readers.

This site would be much better with a writer for each team. Is this possible? does it cost too much? Each writer knows as much about there team as any person I've met. However......they seem to know absolutely nothing about their competitors. Seriously...there lack of knowledge of teams such as the Hawks (nearly a 50 win team) is a disgrace for a site which claims to be the best thing since sliced bread.

"a hellhole of dishonesty" - hardly... but you are gonna beleive what you want to beleive... The problem is a large majority of you do not read what is written... the report you sourced said exactly this "According to various reports the Portland Trail Blazers have agreed to terms with Orlando Magic free agent Hedo Turkoglu"... Various reports, meaning too many to mention.... but don;t pay attention to the details, it does not fit the story your selling.
posted By Steve Kyler, 5 July 2009 6:31:59 AM
"but lets not pretend your writers have a great knowledge of the game." ---- again your so quick to hate, you want to beleive we're sitting in the basement making crap up... thats simply not the case... ask around... there is a reason our guys are on radio and television around the league, there is a reason we have a list as long as my arm of writers that want to write for us - but again, that does not fit the story you want to tell...
posted By Steve Kyler, 5 July 2009 6:36:25 AM
ON having a writer in every market - we used to have that or pretty close to it - however thats an expense thats simply too massive to justify - no one does that not ESPN, not Sports Illustrated no one... its simply too expensive... add to that, its my experience that certain markets simply do not draw - we have had excellent writers in certain markets and they simply do not move the needle... as for the belief that our people don't know their opposing markets thats not true at all - but thats also why we have relationships with guys like Sekou Smith one of the best in the business... Having a body there doesn't always translate to better information - we've tried that.

I understand Hedo's and his wifes's decision. Toronto is not only a multi cultural place, but also one of the three destinations in North America that has a direct flight to Istanbul, Hedo's hometown (the others are NYC and Chicago). If he had gone to Portland, it would have taken at leeast 6-7 hours more for him to get to Turkey. This is not only important for his family and parents but also for the Turkish National Basketball team. Hedo will be playing in Euro 2009-Poland and World Championship in 2010 which will be held in Turkey. So he won't need to take a 20 hour trip to join the national team, instead a 10 hour direct flight from Toronto, sounds good-go Hedo

"Mr. Kyler likes very much to insult the collective IQ of his readers," - Hardly, I spend a lot of my time trying to explain how things work - not only to you, but to others in the field - guys like Larry Coon has become icons of the game because the system we live in is complex, and the complexity drives decisions.... the name of the game for us is putting out the information, we want to be accurate and honest with what we do, we openly engage in feedback like this because each reader is important to us - do you think my guys want to deal with insults like some of the one here? - NO, but I require this, because it building a relationship between us... are we going to be wrong, absolutely... we do not control the action or the information... I spend my day talking to people about basketball, I then in turn share as much of that information as I can with you... I do not know everyone in the business, but I'll put my Rolodex against anyone in the league.

They were good responses and valid points.....although i do disagree about the writers having sufficient knowledge outside there own team. But neither do most people. BUT PLEASE TELL ME YOU DIDN'T SAY "MEMPHIS WERE LOADED AT EVERY POSITION". There's lack of knowledge but that's just Laughable.

Memphis is loaded at every position - why is this so hard to accept - Mike Conley was one of the best point guards in the league after the coaching change... OJ Mayo was phenomenal as a rookie, Rudy gay is a borderline All-Star... Hakim Warrick averaged 11 points and 5 rebounds... and Marc Gasol was one of the best rookies in the class... they are not starting D-Leaguers - they have a ton of talent that needs quality coaching.

I also want to clear something up - there seems to be a misunderstanding of something I wrote in a comment about the Turkoglu thing - "Keep in mind the "reports" that Hedo agreed to terms in Portland did not come from Hedo, they came from one source in Portland that jumped the gun and several others ran with it..." - I am in no way condemning anyone for running that story - Henry Abbott from ESPN broke it, and I'll take anything Henry writes to the bank - he's is tops in my book, one of my absolute favorite guys in the business - that said, just as we have been burned by information coming too fast or changes in direction - my comment was more about, Don't Kill Turkoglu than condemning anyone who ran it - it's not like he was out celebrating that he had a deal with Portland than hosed them, in fact he spoke with John Denton last night and was pretty remorseful about how the whole thing when down and feels terrible how it played out... we're all in such a hurry to beat the other guy that stuff like this happens - it's the nature of the beast these days... So to be clear, my comment was don't kill Turk - the reason there is the moratorium is so players and teams can make these kinds of deals.

I think its the fact that Warrick avraged 11 & 5 and conley was not in form when you said it. You said they should not chase a Power Foward. A CLEAR NEED, because they are loaded there. Seriously, Warrick is terrible and should not start on any NBA team which has aspirations for winning more than the draft lottery. You deserve the hate for that call.

See this is where I get annoyed... the twisting of what was said {http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?STORY_ID=12727]... I had Hasheem Thabeet in my Mock Draft, wrote an article explaing the Grizz's options and was called an idiot for suggesting that they would take him, when I explained that they envisioned situations where they could use Marc Gasol at the four spot, I was again called crazy - I am not saying either is a smart basketball move, simply telling you what they are saying among themselves... I reported this on May 22nd which was well after the Grizz's season ended.... there are some days where what I do is like a big game of Telephone - what got said, is not what gets repeated back to me.
posted By Steve Kyler, 5 July 2009 7:15:20 PM
No one deserves hate... if you don't agree, then make your case, thats what this space is for and why we read it and participate in it... I do not want or expect you to agree with me - I want you to voice your part of this, and thats why we put this tool in place... what should never occur is the name calling and personal insults... but like everything else, what should occur does not also occur... but no one deserves to have the character or motivations questions - thats simply a cheap way out - calling me an idiot is easier than presenting your own facts and making a counter argument - I am an easy target, I am loud and play on the edge of things and I am here every day - I am not going to hide from you, which is why people swipe.... as I said, I'll put who and what I know up against anyone in the game.

And it's that attitude from you, sir that turns me off and makes me want to nitpick. No readers = No Hoopsworld. Just remember that. I'm not saying that I don't enjoy and appreciate this site, very much the contrary, and I in fact thank you for it. What I don't enjoy are the temper tantrums and condescending attitude when someone does disagree with you, especially when you are hit with facts to the contrary of what it is you're trying to argue about. Many a time I've seen you completely attack the credibility of comments made in an attempt to glaze over the fact that they may have a point; that is of course if you do comment back (I realize that you get busy, but when the thread just runs cold after someone else brings up a good point, I tend to lean towards skepticism.) Or, for some reason, certain comments are wiped from the board completely, regardless of whether or not they are indeed disrespectful. For once, just admit the fact that the readers are the reason you’re in business and can make a living from your love of the game. But don’t think for one minute that you’re entitled to anything, or that what you do puts you into a better class of human being. Quite frankly, some of your site’s editing is a joke, but for the most part I keep my mouth shut on the issue. But when you start going off on your little tantrums like this, it makes it hard to justify not pointing out the fact that some of the grammar and punctuation in many of the pieces here are at an adolescent level. But, of course, you have a bail out by saying, “hey, everybody makes mistakes.”
posted By Steve Kyler, 6 July 2009 6:15:00 AM
I think you have it your head there is a lack of respect for the readers, which is the furthest from the case so to be clear for you --- this site was founded on a single guiding principal - one reader at a time - everyone's opinion is important, everyone's e-mail is important and everyone's page view and enjoyment of the site is important, so don't assume thats lost on anyone here - as for comments about editing - beleive me, I wish we had the budget to spend on a lot of improvements, because it would be one less thing for you to point to when trying to be critical of us - but thats just how its going to be - we spend what resources we have on putting people in the path of information and while we are better editorially than we have been in previous years, thats still our weakest point and we know that - but as you have illustrated here, it doesn't matter what we do right... your going to try and tear that down... my point in commenting here is to make sure that the realities of your comments are also heard... we state very clearly that comments that are insulting of the site and the writer are going to be removed... so again, from your chair you may think "you don't care about the readers" when in fact that is why we are here and why we spend so much time interacting with them - but that doesn't fit the little box you want to place us in now does it - hard to paint us as uniformed and petty when we spend some much time answering our critics... If you don't like me or the guys on my team, thats fine, but don't assault the character of the people or the amount of work we put into it this and then say we don't care about the readers because we won't cower away from critics.
posted By hmmm..., 6 July 2009 11:12:17 AM
Steve, thank you for taking the time to have this conversation, but let's get one thing clear. I don't sit around all day waiting for something I can criticize, and the fact that you paint me that way just strengthens what I was saying. Someone is coming in here with real constructive criticism and pointing out a potential character flaw that sometimes rears it's ugly head in what you do. I understand you're human, I understand I have the right to not read your work. But I'm letting you know, from one professional human being to another, from a customer service and public relations standpoint, sometimes you come off as a bit arrogant by doing the very things you criticize people for. I know you don't care if you tick some faceless screen name off, I get it. I understand how hard you and your team work, and I'm personally appreciative for it. Don't misunderstand what I'm trying to say here. Obviously there are bound to be more negative comments, as you've made yourself into a public figure. I understand how frustrating that can be, I've been there. But don't take for granted how smart some of your readers are by getting it in your head that you're always right, which you and I both know you've done a time or two...Take it easy Mr. Kyler, and thank you for everything that you guys do.
