Gordon's Ego the Problem?

In an ongoing story that's yielded nothing but the same news the last several weeks, we've finally got a little tidbit of something new—a source close to the Bulls has indicated that Ben Gordon is still unsigned not because the Bulls haven't given him a fair offer, and not because his agent has blown the negotiation process for him; it's because Gordon's ego might be getting in the way of his financial stability.

Reportedly Gordon believes that since he's been the highest offensive producer on the team for three years now he deserves to be the highest-paid guy on the roster. The six years and $60 million Chicago allegedly has on the table is nowhere near the $71 million Luol Deng got earlier this summer, and in his own head he apparently believes he should making at least that, too.

Never mind that Gordon is the team's sixth man, and at $10 million a season he'd be one of the highest paid bench players in the league. To him, that's just not enough bread. Now there's sentiment about some within the organization that he won't come to camp next week. Bulls brass is hopeful he'll show up to media day—they'll have his jersey cleaned and pressed and everything—but nobody's particularly optimistic.

This go'n get ugly.

But don't blame the Bulls; they've had a fair offer on the table for him for weeks. You can't really blame the agent either; they can advise a player all they want but at the end of the day it's the player's decision to take a deal or leave it.

No, this one's on Gordon himself, which should blow the mind of anyone with any common sense or knowledge of BG's market value and talent relative to his paycheck knows is an insane decision.

He's not the first guy to do the holdout thing. Sasha Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao played this game last season and did nothing but lose money. Offers declined and games came and went without a paycheck. Bonzi Wells turned down a $40 million extension just a couple seasons ago, and now he's unemployed. And no one will ever forget Latrell Sprewell turning down $8 million a year because he had to "feed his family." Since then he's had his luxury yacht repossessed. Turning down big money is risky business.

The teams have the leverage in these situations, and the Bulls do right now. Despite everything they want Gordon on the team and are even willing to overpay him to keep him there.

If he does finally give in and take the qualifying offer, it'll be for about $6.4 million, but every regular season game he misses is money off that amount—something to the tune of $78,000 a game. For a guy who seems to want a ton of money he seems to be making a significant mistake by currently being under contract for zero dollars in 2008-2009.

Not only that, but the Bulls have already been in "pre-camp" for a couple weeks now without Gordon. If and when he does come back, he'll have no knowledge of a new offensive system under new coach Vinny Del Negro and "offensive coordinator" Bernie Bickerstaff. Historically Gordon starts seasons slowly, and that's with a full preseason and training camp to warm up. How will he perform when he does finally return?

Some suggest that Gordon is expecting Chicago to start the season poorly on the offensive end, and of course there's always the chance of an injury to Derrick Rose or Kirk Hinrich, but what does he do if all those guys run on all cylinders? This is a gamble that has a strong chance of not working out for the high-scoring, undersized Bulls guard.

How much longer will this young man hold out? How on earth will this headache negotiation come to an end? Maybe Sprewell can offer some helpful advice. If anyone can scare Gordon into taking the sixty mil, it'd be him.

Although Ben Gordon is one of my favourite players in the league to watch, he has to realize that 60 million dollars is a lot of money to leave, especially guaranteed cash. What does it mean to be the leading scorer on a team 33-49? Ben is an undersized guard who has trouble guarding most opponents and doesn't give you much besides points. Deng can score, defend multiple positions, rebound and finish on the fastbreak. I don't know if it is possible, but can Ben not sign a three year contract? With all the big free agents coming up in 2010, no one right now will pay Ben Gordon what he thinks he deserves. He can argue that Larry Hughes should not make more than him, but the Bulls didn't originally sign his contract, the Cavs did. It would be a shame to see Ben on another team, especailly with Derek Rose on the roster.

Ben Gordon is such an idiot. six years and sixty million is over paying him as it is and is a very generous offer from the Bulls.Deng got 71 million because he is ready to be the leader of the team while Gordon is nothing but a distraction. I wish they could find a good trade somehow, but I just dont think they will before the season starts, so itll have to be sometime in jan or feb. although to be mean maybe he will pull a livingston and get hurt if he doesnt realize what an idiot he is

just read an article saying there are whispers the raptors are trying to sign gordon to fill the need of a high scoring 2 guard... with two of the three having to be moved for ap space(Bargs, Parker or Kapono)... Weird huh?

Ben Gorden is a headahce you like him when he gives you 30+ points but then the next game he only gets like 4-12 he is very inconsistent and doesnt defend well. When hes off you hate him. 60mil is too much for inconsistancy. Bulls are doing the right thing.. In other words "TAKE THE MONEY BEN". The bulls are being far too generous to you. Even a simpleton would take that kind of money

Damn... How much money do these players want? They get to play basketball and get millions of dollars doing it, this should be dream come true. And its not like the Bulls are giving him a bad offer.

The Bulls should not allow Gordon back on the team. His pouting and whining was a large raeson for the bulls poor season last year. He is greedy and jealous of deng.Gordon is typical of whats wrong with many of these pro atheletes. Is self absorbed and selfish.Deng is a humanitarian and has done great things for his country in Africa.Jamacia is a VERY poor country and has anyone heard of Gordon doing ANYTHING to give back to his homeland of Jamaica? No because he is a real punk and idiot. I've had the pleasure conversing with ben, and believe me he is a little dummy. He should thank God that he can put a ball in abasket for money. With his brains if there was no basketball he would be just another jamaican in England taking up space, or in Jamaica Pushing a street cart selling beer or food. BULLS TRADE THE DUMBASS INGRATE KNOWN TO YOU AS BEN " HEY MON " GORDON.

3 way deal the lakers get gooden and harrington, the warriors get gordon, and the bulls get walton, and a GS 1st rounder, and lamar who can play point forward lessening the burden on hinrich and rose any thoughts?

chris- I think that Gordon can veto any trade because he's in a tender year. He'd probably want an extension as a part of any trade. So can you imagine GS agreeing to pay him more than CHI offered?

Wow... a lot of strong feelings this morning! I feel like it's important to mention that Ben is a pretty smart, nice guy, which is why all this hooplah makes so little sense to me. I hope this gets resolved, but like everyone seems to be saying, he needs to come down to earth a little bit about what he's worth. Just wild stuff, isn't it?

Guys - couple of points... Ben technically is not under contract... if he signs the one-year offer, he then gets the right to veto any trades... in a sign and trade, a team can make an offer to Ben, but unless he signs it means nothing... In a sign and trade scenario Ben would be considered a base Year player meaning the Bulls would have to take back more than they send, unless he is sent to a team with cap space to absorb the difference.

BG, man last season you pass up $55,000,000.00. The Bulls go 33-49 and then offer you $60,000,000.00 coming off a year worse than before. What is he thinking? There is no trade market for him. GM Paxson said yesterday on Chicago Sports Live on CSN at 5:30pm that he only had one serious discussion regarding trades and that base compensation deals make it extremely hard to match players. He went on to say that they are not going to take on bad contracts. His selfish attitude is a big reason the Bulls were lousy last season. The team comes first Ben, not you.

Ben Gordon needs a reality check. To turn down sixty million dollars is insane.Ben, you have peaked as a player and this is the highest amount of money you will make during your basketball career!Put your ego aside and take the money on the table! Secure your future and that of your family. I don't care how many points you scored, the team only won 33 games!

Ben thinks that just because a bunch of other players got overpayed, he should too. I think the bulls should just give him the tender and let him walk, or even just let him walk now. Can they trade his rights? This scenario completely reminds me of the $35 million that Bonzi walked out on.

Chris-lakers give up lamar and walton for harrington and gooden? um....hell no! lamar is in a contract year, he WILL be traded by Feb for the point guard of the future for LA cause everyone knows Farmar cant get it done in the playoffs..as for Gordon, 6ft 3in SG = no defense = no title

Ben Gordon doesn't have anything to do with Jamaica.

Dan said it very well. Ben is being a jerk, but since many people who know him say he's a bright, nice guy, I have to believe someone pissed him off. Why else would he be acting so irrationally, almost spitefully. Whether it was Scott Skiles, John Paxson, Jerry Reinsdorf, other players, or probably a combination thereof. Skiles said Gordon "dribbled like a fifth grader" which even if partly true you don't throw your players under the bus like that/to that extreme. My bet is since Paxson apparently alinenated Deng to the point that he/his "camp" wouldn't deal with him any more, and Reinsdorf had to get involved with the signing, that he is probably also part of the problem. Reinsdorf's treatment of D'Antoni and to a lessor extent Doug Collins shows he can be a bit of a game player and sometimes a downright jerk. I just think it's a shame that everybody focuses on the one person who's being admittedly a jackass, while ignoring the provocation that undoubtedly occurrred. I wish at minimum the Bulls would fire John Paxson as he is indecisive, and does not command respect/authority that is necessary for a successful executive. Too bad Ben is the sole fall guy in all this but everybody wants a simple answer to an emotional dilemma, and Ben if he had the right advice or mentality could have adressed the things that had bothered him as they occurred instead of building to the point where he has soured on the Bulls. I'm convinced it was just as much if not more a matter of personal disrespect and misdealings than grievances over being the starter or playing time due to the Larry Hughes trade. If they were on good terms to begin with, I think he would have tolerated these situations with more class and dignity than he has shown. The only way Paxson and Reinsdorf are going to be able to redeem themselves is if Vinny Del Negro turns out to be a good coach which is a huge question mark, and if Rose turns out to be an All-Star/franchise type player.
