McMillan: My Door Is Open

The morning after a thrilling victory courtesy of Brandon Roy's last second heroics, Nate McMillan woke to some unsettling headlines circulating around his ball club: a trade demand from Sergio Rodriguez's agent.

It's not the way he wanted to start his day.

Jose Ortiz – one of Rodriguez's agents along with Herb Rudoy - told marca.com that his client is "frustrated" about his situation in Portland and the hope is Sergio "gets traded to a team where he's going to be treated in a more natural manner."

If that is truly the case, McMillan would rather hear about it from the person instead of having to read about it in print.

"I talked to the entire team this morning about 'that,'" McMillan told HOOPSWORLD from the Blazers' practice facility.

"If you are unhappy come to me. Don't let me read that in the press because I don't control what you say to the media. If you have a problem or if you are upset about something, I'm here. Let's talk about it. Whatever you want to say, bring it to the office and let's talk about it.

"Let's talk about why you are not playing or why you are wanting to be traded. We've had conversations about roles. If you are unhappy with your role, then that is something different. My door is always open."

At the start of this season, Sergio's playing time has been limited to say the least.

Sergio went scoreless in just over 11 minutes last night against the Houston Rockets while dishing out six assists. Before that, his most playing time (14 minutes) came in a loss to Phoenix when he finished with five points and four assists. On the season Rodriguez is averaging roughly nine minutes per game. Only Ike Diogu (who has only appeared in three games this season) is averaging less run for Portland (2.3 minutes per game).

"We've got a lot of guys unhappy," McMillan said in jest.

"You think (Jerryd) Bayless is sitting over there saying 'I'm okay with this'? You think Ike (Diogu) is saying he's okay with this? You think (Shavlik) Randolph is okay with being on the inactive list?"

While McMillan discussed the reported trade demand and how he prefers to handle the situation, Rodriguez and General Manager Kevin Pritchard talked at length one-on-one after practice. Sergio talked, often animated at times. Pritchard basically listened. As for McMillan, he essentially wants to move past the media hoopla and just get back to basketball.

"I'm gonna put the combinations out there to give us the best chance to win," McMillan said.

That's all anyone wants right now.

Excellent job Wendell, between you and BEdge, we got both sides of the coin. Do you like Raymond Felton as a point guard? If the Blazers did a deal with Charlotte, where would he fall in the Blazers' point guard pecking order? - Elgin.

thanks for that elgin....much appreciated. honestly, i like felton both as a person and player. not sure if he would start right off the bat (that is if a deal was to be made), but i like him as an option in any backcourt.

Well, after I figured out the whole Date thing.... My initial reaction was one of distain for Sergio's arrogance in the matter, and I haven't moved past that yet. I understand he wants to play, but he needs to see the bigger picture. I think he's talented enough to win the starting spot eventually if works hard, but he seems to want an awful lot handed to him just because he knows how to pass. He seems to forget that he doesn't play defense or shoot the ball particularly well, so I say good luck young sir and via con Dios el Chacho. The thing I worry about is whether trading him would come back to haunt us. If he ever learned how to defend, he could be extremely good, and anyone can see the talent is there. Kirk Hinrich keeps looking better and better. Take care Wendell.

thanks smith....i've been getting of these responses today - in comments and via email. here's the way i see it: we have to examine both sides. it's easy to jump on sergio here....obviouslyt he didn't go about putting his feelings out there the right way, but his concerns are still valid....as for the trade rumors, that's a beast of its own. time will tell....

Well, we'll see what shakes out of this. It could have been a lot worse. The bright side is, the rotation needs to be trimmed anyway, so maybe there will be something develop that is too good to pass up. Who knows. What did you think of Batum as a starter last night? It's kind of nice having a high energy defensive guy at the 3 isn't it?

my feeling is that Sergio feels like he's be lied to by Nate. Nate said Sergio was the back up point guard, but is getting no where near the 28 minutes that jack got last year. He watches his garbage minutes getting eat up by a PG that was a high draft pick and more of a Nate McMillan PG. He talked to Nate before the Utah game and it seems that Sergio feels that Nate does nothing but let his pleas go one ear and out the other

Bob, if you're talking about Bayless getting Sergio's minutes, that hasn't been the case at all. The fact is Rudy and Roy get a majority of back-up PG minutes, and rightfully so.

back-up minutes at the point are about 10 minutes, before nate goes with brandon and rudy behind blake at the point....that's according to nate. makes sense...who would you rather have out there at the point - brandon, rudy or sergio? as for batum, nate loved what he brought to the starting lineup.....defense. that's the focus with this kid right now.

hello to everyone, i'm writting this from spain, just want to say to general manager and head coach of portland trail blazers, do not waste the most talented pg. spain has seen in decades, please don't do it, it's fine if Mr MacMillan doesn't believe in him, he is the coach, of course he wants the best for the team and himself, but please don't let time run out for sergio, just free him.

Hey Spanish guy, greetings from America. Sergio isn't a freaking slave. You Spanish guys always make it out to be Nate's fault, it's BS!!! If he wants out, he needs to be a man and come out and say it. Otherwise, he needs to be patient and realize that as time progresses, he's going to get the minutes. Either way, he needs an attitude adjustment.
