HOOPSWORLD
Lee To Portland Not Likely

It was only weeks ago that a source close to the New York Knicks told HOOPSWORLD that New York was actively in talks with the Portland Trail Blazers regarding Knicks power forward David Lee.

Apparently the conversation continues.

According to one media outlet, the "Blazers' organization feels Lee's style of play would fit perfectly in Portland" and that the Blazers "are getting serious about trading for David Lee."

While there is no doubt Lee – who is averaging 14.8 points and 10.9 rebounds per game – would help solve one of Portland's holes in backing-up LaMarcus Aldridge, the Knicks and Blazers may be further apart in reaching a deal than some might expect.

"Honestly, I don't see them moving Lee this season. Over the summer maybe, but not now," a league source close to the situation in New York told HOOPSWORLD.

"Lee is a key piece (for the Knicks).  Every team in the league asks (Knicks General Manager) Donnie Walsh about him. A sure sign they should hold onto him."

The "talks" between Portland and New York might be ongoing, but it's safe to say they are going nowhere real fast.

Lee will be a free agent at the end of this season, and even though Walsh may be entertaining current offers for his services, the Knicks themselves have not ruled out negotiations in bringing back someone on the verge of posting a career-numbers. Besides, the Blazers may not exactly have the right pieces to entice New York to make a move on Lee. That's why another team - as Newsday's Alahn Hahn reported today - like the Los Angeles Clippers could be involved.

If Walsh opts to trade the fourth-year pro, the criteria will be steep for all teams involved. That is for certain.

"He'd (Walsh) only do it if he got an absolute stud in return or could package him with Jared Jefferies or Eddy Curry. Even in a deal like that they'd need a star in return," the source continued.

The Jeffries-Curry situation would be shaky at best either way for the Blazers - two contracts left that extend past 2010. Even still, who wouldn't be interested in acquiring Lee?

Year in and year out, the 6-9 blue-collar power forward - who moonlights most nights at center for head coach Mike D'Antoni – collects double-doubles (ranks 3rd in the league in that category) more often than people add friends on Facebook. Only New Orleans' Chris Paul and Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic have more double-doubles, and in his last 23 games played Lee has notched 20 double-doubles. He is also among league leaders in field-goal percentage (4th at 57%), total rebounds (5th with 339) and rebounds per game (6th). A crowd favorite since the first time he stepped on the floor at Madison Square Garden during the 2005-06 season, it's not farfetched to say complete anarchy would ensue at MSG if Lee were traded.

For a Knicks franchise trying to regain a displaced fan base, letting Lee go during the season would not be a wise move, on or off the court. At 13-19, the Knicks aren't ruled out of a postseason picture just yet, particularly in the Eastern Conference (the Atlanta Hawks, who finished seven games under .500 and made the playoffs last season know all about that) where weirder things have happened.

"Lee is arguably the Knicks most valuable player."

"I don't buy the rumor."

Sounds like the best move between New York and Portland for David Lee is no move.

i hear you ant. it's more referring to the chances of lee relocating during the summer versus during the season.

good story, now can you explain this to the other staff writers who think D'antoni actually wants to trade lee. Because if lee doesnt fit well in dantonis system why oh why would he be optomistic on currys return!

thanks jtest....hoping to ask mike his thoughts on the matter when the knicks come through portland next month. for now though i will say, i find it hard to believe any coach wouldn't want what david lee has to offer. even if the knock is he's slow on defense, it's hard to argue with his numbers. you know?

Is this source the same one who told Hoopsworld the Shaun Livingston was going to be a Blazer. LOL However is all seriousness i am not surprised i expected when i woke up this morning to see this rumor dead or close to it.

I sure hope you are wrong Wendell, i would love Lee in Portland. Too bad my love can't make a trade happen.

ripcity4life....i even have to laugh at that one. sometimes we are right. sometimes we are wrong. that's just the nature of the business. and with the trade deadline right around the corner, we are bound to hear - and discuss - a lot of these type of things. and will.....sorry bro, you are on your own with the whole "love" thing.

ive only seen him play a few times, but is Channing Frye really that much of a liability at PF? McMillan must not think to highly of him if they need a backup for Aldridge and Frye is only playing 12 minutes a gm.

actually just tell me if he still plays like mark blount. because if he plays like blount then id understand why they want a backup for Aldrige

frye has fallen out of the rotation after being aldridge's back-up for much of this season....his shot is usually on. but when it's not, it tends to showcase his other shortcomings - defense and toughness.

LaM Aldridge averages over 35 minutes a game, so unless they're planning on getting rid of him it wouldn't make sense to bring in Lee. Lee will be eligible for a big extension this summer, which would make him an expensive backup. I realize he also plays center for NY, but the Blazers have the minutes there covered as well with two true centers.

I would be down if knicks get camby, send lee and jeffries to portland, and clips get bayless, frye, and someone else.....maybe outlaw or webster.....would be a bad trade for portland, but i can dream.
posted By wiz4life, 5 January 2009 10:10:13 PM
well then from now on hes Channing "Mark Blount" Frye
posted By Pete, 5 January 2009 10:32:25 PM
I thought Portland was really high on Bayless, what's up with him being "available" now? Frye, Diogu, Raef, Sergio, maybe Blake, maybe Outlaw are the only ones in my mind that are worth talking about. Besides, why would Portland make any moves before Webster comes back?
posted By andrew, 5 January 2009 10:38:24 PM
whats more laughable is the thought that camby can be had for a scrub like q-rich. hes hardly an upgrade from fred jones.

pete....this time of year, you are going to hear a lot of names tossed about...bayless just happened to make the cut in this case. people will pinpoint the blazers back court because they have the pieces to work with. the tough part right now is trying to figure out if bayless fits in portland as a point guard or shooting guard....some say neither.
