Alex's Weekly Update: If the Golden State Warriors are content with Monta Ellis as their point guard -- and he would probably be out of the bay by now if they weren't -- then Demar DeRozan shoots to the top of their board. DeRozan has the athleticism to run with Ellis and the mid-range game Golden State lacks. There might be more polished players on the board, but if the Warriors are committed to Ellis and the hard-working power forward Anthony Randolph, the team won't do any better than this USC product.
Tyreke Evans would remain a candidate if he is available, but a few other teams might be interested in trading up to get the former Memphis Tiger. DeRozan represents good value at the No. 7 pick and has as much upside as anyone in the lottery.
Joel's Weekly Update: While it's hard right now to determine where exactly every non-Blake-Griffin draftee is going to fall, we really have gotten a pretty strong sense of some guys' floors. Stephen Curry, for example, probably won't go any lower than New York with the #8 pick. We've known this for a while. But now there are other guys whose floors are being established.
One thing worth noting (though my mock doesn't express this) is that there are rumblings Tyler Hansbrough could get an invitation to the Green Room because he's got at least one lottery team looking very seriously at him. It hasn't been my experience in talking to a lot of smart NBA people that Hansbrough is necessarily a lottery talent, but a team looking for a sure thing at least knows what they'll get from him.
Earl Clark is another guy who is not expected to drop out of the lottery, and according to a lot of recent scouting reports on Omri Casspi he's been killing people in workouts. Up to this point he's been a borderline first-round guy, but now there are some wondering he couldn't get pulled down in the teens. Other guys are likely to see floors established in the coming days as well, but for now at least there are some guys' futures taking relative shape.
Yannis' Weekly Update: On draft night everyone pays attention to what teams are the winners and losers. What isn't talked about enough is what players come out winners, which is actually the most important. The Clippers are going to be considered winners solely because they got the top prize of the draft: Blake Griffin. However, regarding Blake specifically there are actually better situations out there for him.
On draft night no one player is going to be put in a better position to succeed than whichever point guard the New York Knicks decide to either trade for or select with the 8th overall pick. Mike D'Antoni's system is proven in this league. It turned Steve Nash into the best point guard in the league for a period of time and allowed Chris Duhon to produce career-highs in points and assists.
Ricky Rubio, Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans, Jrue Holiday, Stephen Curry, and Jonny Flynn all have the potential to bloom into superstars under D'Antoni. They'll quickly get the chance to play too as the Knicks are making this pick with the intentions of finding their long-term solution at point guard. The Knicks are no longer the joke of the league, they're being led by proven winners on the sideline and in the front office. Although they may not be in the playoffs next season, it truly is just a matter of time.
Out of all the top point guard prospects in this year's draft only Ricky Rubio is trying to having a major say-so in where he lands. All of them should have their fingers crossed for New York though, because from there the next stop is stardom.
Steve's Weekly Update: With less than a week to go until the 2009 NBA draft there are a few players initially pegged as top-10 talents that could take a tumble. The biggest, no pun intended, may be Hasheem Thabeet. Word is that Memphis and Oklahoma City have considered Thabeet but may pass on him in favor of proven offensive players likely causing the 7-footer to tumble into the 5 to 10 range.
Brandon Jennings may also find the draft process unkind on Draft night. Word is if he does not go #6 to Minnesota, he could fall in the the teens. Jennings has worked out well for every team he has seen, but his biggest knock is maturity and pure leadership skills, plus his less-than-spectacular showing in Italy last year have left teams with more doubts about Jennings than any of his peers. Most scouts list Jennings fourth or fifth in terms of this crop of point guard.
Austin Daye is another player with tremendous upside, but he's worked out poorly in several cities and the word on Daye is he could be a great player in a few years, but not NBA-ready this year making him more of a project player. Most teams that have seen him talk about his ability to shoot the ball and his freakish length and athleticism, but warn that he's going to really need time to grow into the NBA game, making him far more likely to go in the bottom of the first round than at the top.
And it seems Tyler Hansbrough may get a green room invite on draft night, signaling at least one NBA team in the top 14 has him as a possible pick. Word is New Jersey is very high on Hansbrough and could make him the 11th pick. The problem with that is New Jersey has told several agents they plan to trade down on draft night, so it will be interesting to see the names invited to New York and whether Tyler actually makes the cut.
