The Big Day Arrives: The 2009 NBA Draft gets underway tonight in New York and things have really started shaking loose. After weeks of denials and weeks of misdirection the Phoenix Suns did as was rumored and have agreed to a deal that will send Shaquille O'Neal to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic, the 46th pick in the draft and $500,000 in cash according to Chris Broussard of ESPN.com. This on the heels of the Hawks' finalizing a deal that will send Acie Law and Speedy Claxton to Golden State for disgruntled Jamal Crawford, a deal that will not be finalized until July 1st. These won't be the only deals done today, here is what we're hearing in today's draft notes:

Harden Has A Problem: James Harden did not make Wednesday's media availability session in New York; instead he had to make a last minute visit to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Harden, who is likely one of the first ten players taken, got some bad news Tuesday when the Washington Wizards traded their #5 overall selection to Minnesota, a selection that was promised to Harden according to sources. Harden is hoping for some draft luck that Ricky Rubio comes off the board before the #3 pick with Oklahoma City, because he is apparently the second name on their board just below Ricky Rubio. The Thunder have retained a Spanish law firm in the event they land Rubio to help expedite his release, so Harden may find himself without a floor at this point. Harden's camp was deliberate in some of the teams he would work out for - if Minnesota passes on Harden, things could get interesting. It's unlikely a talent like Harden slides too far and it's hard to argue he's not a perfect fit in the new Wolves lineup.

Knicks Getting Another Pick: The New York Knicks are angling to acquire another first round draft pick - word is the pick will be the #28 overall selection from Minnesota that may be bought outright for cash. The Wolves are denying a deal is done, but it's believed it will get done as picks start coming off the board. There is also a belief that the Knicks are closing in on a trade that would land them Darko Milicic in exchange for Quentin Richardson. The deal would clear roster room for Memphis' expected selection of Hasheem Thabeet if they retain the #2 overall selection. For the Knicks, acquiring Darko would be about dealing away the $8 plus million owed Quentin Richardson in 2010, and gives the Knicks another big body to play at center. The framework is in place and sources on both sides say the deal is contingent on the Grizzlies keeping the 2nd pick, something they were still working on last night when Grizzlies brass met to discuss final options.

Nivens Has Suitors: St. Joe's Ahmad Nivens has been very busy of the past few days, and is drawing a lot of interest. There is belief that Nivens may sneak into the bottom of the first round as teams are jockeying to try and grab him. The surprise candidate may be the Los Angeles Lakers, who recently saw Nivens and were more than intrigued. The Lakers may, however, be dealing their first round selection today opening up room for another team to swoop in and land Nivens. Nivens may still be be an early 2nd round selection, but sources close to the situation say that of the team that really wants Nivens, one may have to trade into the first round to get him.

Daye Going in The Teens?: Gonzaga big man Austin Daye was a green room invite and is still cautiously optimistic about here he could land, telling HOOPSWORLD last night that it could be anywhere from "11 to 16". In this class more than any other it is nearly impossible to accurately chart where teams are really going with more than a handful of agents saying there was a lot of misdirection out there. Daye, who as one Eastern Conference coach said during the pre-draft process "could have the best upside of anyone in the class," looks to be an earlier pick than most people are expecting, but even he's not sure where he'll be tomorrow.

Williams Going Higher Than Expected: Louisville's Terrence Williams could be the surprise of the first 13 picks. Word is Williams could be going #11 overall to New Jersey, but he may not stay there. Williams is something of an enigma; he comes off as open and honest as anyone in the class, but there are questions about his maturity. One executive called him "Ron Artest-Light," but almost no one questions his game. The Nets are rumored to have the framework of a deal with Chicago that would land Chicago the #11 pick in exchange for the #16 and the #26 pick. Sources in New York have said the deal seems to be in place, it's ultimately up to the players Chicago covets actually falling to #11 and that may or may not happen.

Rondo And The Celtics: It's unclear what the Boston Celtics are doing, but it is clear they are doing something. For weeks we have been hearing rumblings out of Boston that Rajon Rondo is on the outs with Doc Rivers and Danny Ainge and that both were considering moving their point guard while his value is high. A few days later rumors started surfacing that Rondo was being shopped. The Celtics quickly denied that, then Yahoo! broke a story that Rondo was offered to the Pistons in a complex package that would have returned Rod Stuckey and Tayshaun Prince. The Celtics quickly denied that.

Celtic president Danny Ainge recently was on Boston's WEEI, openly challenging Rondo and labeling him as immature saying "he needed to grow up", acknowledging that Rondo was fined for being late to playoff games (he tries to avoid the media), and ultimately Ainge said he did not feel Rondo was a "MAX contract player" apparently responding to initial extension talks with Rondo's camp.

Bill Duffy, who represents Rondo, took exception to Ainge's assault on his client saying, "I am just surprised that Danny is speaking, even if he considers it constructively, in a public setting [about Rondo],'' agent Bill Duffy said to Marc J. Spears of the Boston Globe. "I don't think that it's appropriate to say that about one of your top players. Even if it's spoken constructively, I don't think it should be done in public. I don't think [Ainge] would like it if [Celtics managing partner] Wyc [Grousbeck] was talking about him in public."

It is increasingly clear that all is not rosy with regards to Rondo and the Celtics and the team may have opened a can of worms on themselves with how they have handled this. It is not out of the question the Celtics trigger a deal today involving Rondo, especially if it gets them a couple of options in return. Word is the Celtics are very high on Tyreke Evans - you have to wonder if Sacramento would rather have Rondo than the #4 pick?

Houston And The Suns?: The New York Post is reporting that Houston may have a deal for Tracy McGrady.

According to Peter Vecsey of the New York Post, the same source that revealed to him that Terry Porter was being fired during All-Star weekend is saying that the Suns may have an additional deal in the works that would land them Tracy McGrady, Aaron Brooks and Carl Landry in exchange for Leandro Barbosa and Amar'e Stoudemire.

Given the insane deals we have seen triggered over the past few days, this deal is not any more insane than the others that got done; what makes this report even more interesting is the fact that Houston GM Daryl Morey told Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle that he's received an enormous amount of interest in McGrady's expiring contract.

"We're getting a lot of interest on Tracy, and I do have to listen," Morey said. "It's my job to make this team as ready to win the title as possible. I think the reason we are going to have a pretty high bar on moving him is because he still provides exactly what coach (Rick Adelman) and I thought we were missing, which was a guy who can get a high-quality shot at the end of the game.

"That said, we want to position ourselves for the playoffs, it looks like it's going to be hard for Tracy to be here for a good chunk of the year, so if we can get a talented player who helps us all season, I think we have to look at it."

Houston desperately wants to acquire a pick in the middle of this draft and with word that the Suns could be trading out of the #14 pick, a deal with Houston could yield that kind of pick for the Rockets, who at 14 could get a shot at Ty Lawson or Eric Maynor, if they decide to pull the trigger on a deal moving out Aaron Brooks.

The other motivation here is Yao Ming. Keep in mind Yao's camp has made it clear that he will not entertain a contract extension this summer if the Rockets remain as constructed – subtle hints that Tracy McGrady needs to go. There are also reports that a recent evaluation of Yao's broken foot is showing no signs of healing putting Yao's recovery plan in question.

Look for more on this later today.

WOW, That deal would be a steal for Houston. I'd say Brooks and Barbosa are close to equal in terms of value so they bassically give up T-Mac and Landry for Amare, wow.

The Phoenix-Houston would be really interesting if it went through. Do you think T-Mac would fit in the desert with J-Rick there? What if Barnes and Hill are both re-signed? I think Landry and Brooks would both be good fits. Brooks could learn to distribute more from Nash, and you have a rebounding force and a low-post scoring presence in Landry to replace the departure of STAT and Shaq. Barbosa would be good in H-Town, as he'd get plenty of burn and his share of shots. Think STAT next to Yao would be a good fit? Especially with Scola already playing the 4 and Cook and Hayes on the bench. Houston already have a few bigs. I do realise that other than Yao, none are at STAT's level though.

It's an interesting deal, and I can see how Brooks and Landry fit in Phoenix as well as Barbosa in Houston. STAT would be okay as well. Bu what about T-Mac. I'm not liking it if Phoenix re-signs Barnes and Hill, with J-Rich and Dudley already there as well. It'd turn into a bit of a logjam.

You all are missing the major point with the T Mac trade. How does he fit in? He might not even play. The trade is more for salary reasons that the actual play of T Mac.

@ J.Dubb - Good point. Don't know how I missed the idea of the trade. It's exactly the same as the Shaq-to-Cleveland trade. They get Ben Wallace's expiring $14-million contract in the Clevealand salary-dump (deal), and they get the expiring contract of Tracy McGrady as well as off-loading Amar'e Stoudemire's contract. This is purely another salary-dump, a cost-cutting move for the financially struggling Suns. The difference between the Houston deal and the Cavaliers deal is that the Suns would pick up some nice, developing, and more importantly, young players from Houston in Brooks and Landry, who could be building blocks for the future. Not necessarily a cornerstone for the franchise, but building blocks.

@ J. Dubb - I agree. I completely mis-understood the idea of this deal. It's exactly the same as the Cleveland deal in that the financially struggling Suns are making a cost-cutting move in dumping Amar'e Stoudemire's contract and replacing it with the expiring contract of T-Mac. The bonus here, unlike the Cleveland trade, is that the Suns get Brooks and Landry, two up-and-coming, talented, developing, and most importantly, young players for their future. Would be a good move for both teams actually.

Unless the #14 pick is also included this would be a horrible deal for the Rockets.

On a good note for them, they only have 22.5 million dollars in salary after this year. That can make them a player in 2010. The problem here is that they will surely lose Steve Nash who won't agree to an extension. Now on the flip side, they can flip those expiring contracts (Wallace, McGrady, Pavlovic) for nice players and get back trade exceptions with lesser priced players. This will help them not dive into the luxury tax threshole. The players that they have under contract past this year are Richardson, Brooks, Landry, and Dragic. If Nash says he won't sign, he is a vert tradable assett too. The biggest problem is, why would you sign with Phoenix in 2010? The player that everyone wants to play with will be gone. The coach everyone wanted to play for is already done. The owner is struggling and the talent is below average.

Do you guys ever actually report anything, or just regurgitate articles & internet rumors, and pose questions you can't answer or even offer information on?
posted By Occy, 25 June 2009 10:59:31 AM
All very true points. I think it's a good deal for both teams though. You could throw in the #14 to Houston to sweeten it though. Otherwise, Phoenix are definitely in re-building mode, and this would, IMO, place some doubt on Steve Nash trapping himself in an extension with a re-building team when he wants to win. He played the whole situation very smartly, I must say.

guys, just to let you know that amare has an expiring contract as well so they wouldnt be saving money or cost cutting with the T-MAC deal.. Chicago would have a better deal to offer for amare if the phenoix are serious about rebuilding and getting some nice young players.. i anticipate this draft will be full of suprising deals

Speaking of the Phoenix Suns.. I heard a rumour about the Indiana Pacers sending shopping T.J. Ford around, and Phoenix is apparently a possible destination for him. I have no idea who the Pacers would get back though. Anyone else know anything about this one? Or is it just rubbish?

The point you are missing is that Phoenix is not making these moves to significantly upgrade their roster. They are cost cutting moves. Robert Sarver (Suns Owner) lost about 92 MILLION dollars this year and his company's stock dropped 91%. With that said, they are trying to cut cost. McGrady's 23 million coming off the books is much better than Stoudamire's 15 million. In the process, they also get rid of Barbosa's 7 million for 2 more years, in essence savying them even more money. Moreso, McGrady's contract is insured at 80%. Each game that he does not play, the insurance complany is paying for it. If he does not play this year, that is 18.56 MILLION that Sarver does not have to pay. Chicago does not have that luxury. If McGrady does come back, he sells more tickets that Hirich or Tyrus Thomas. Also, Phoenix gets nice young cheap talent in Brooks (great insurance if and when Nash leaves) and Landry.
posted By PY, 25 June 2009 11:44:13 AM
The Suns financial issues have them collecting a bunch of junk parts. Trading for Brooks is their way of telling Nash they really don't want to sign him to an extension. Landry is a good role player, and that's it. McGrady may never even play for them before he's traded again. Don't fool yourself into believing the Suns are dumping salary for 2010, other teams are doing it to sign players like Amare but the Suns already have him, they could probably have just brought in new talent with the trade of Shaq that would appeal to Amare and re-sign him. They are hurting financially, this has nothing to do with them being major players in 2010.
posted By PY, 25 June 2009 11:59:54 AM
Also, If I'm the Rockets I'm not sure I want to ruin the harmony they seem to have by bring in a "possible?" cancer like Stoudemire. A healthy Yao Ming is their first option, that's not going to sit well with Stoudemire, who wants to be the #1 guy wherever he goes. Houston trades for Stoudemire and they'll just be renting him.
