you can trade players as many times as you want, the only time you cant trade someone right away is when you sign them as a free agent, there is a timetable as to when that person becomes eligible for trading.

The Clips now have the money to make a max offer to a player in 2010 to add to their young and talented core.

What does Memphis gain by this? They lose capspace, risk his no defense selfish personality rubbing off on their young players (Thabeet especially) and any points/boards Randolph gets will go back the other way to whoever he neglects to cover.

Why did Memphis do this.Why.

The Grizzlies add a 20-10 guy who has some flaws that I assume they hope Marc Gasol and Thabeet make up for - ie defense. Their cap position isn't ruined they can spend this year and probably next year too still.

The funny thing about this- everybody was resigned to the fact that the Clippers would never be able to move Randolph's horrible contract and that it would be near impossible to find suitors. They were faced with having to choose between losing Kaman or losing Camby, neither of which they particularly wanted to do. Surely no one would take Randolph's contract, poor defence, and character issues off their hands...? Well... looks like the Grizzlies were happy to oblidge. This deal is almost like trading Randoplh's best case projected 2009-2010 production (20pts,10Reb) and contract ($17.3 million) for Griffin's best case projected 2009-2010 production (20pts,10reb) and contract ($4.98 million) and a few 3 pointers. I know which one I would rather have!

Why does Memphis do so many stupid things, especially involving the LA teams? First Gasol, and now this. I'm not going to argue...with Detroit signing CV and Gordon and Memphis making this inane trade, that just leaves OKC will any space whatsoever to sign Paul Millsap away from my Utah Jazz.

im happy we made the move
im not a big fan of randolph but being honest, it dont matter how much money we got nobody is gonna come to memphis
with this trade we get a 20ppg 10rpg guy who's not crying about not wanting to play here
so im giving him a chance besides he lit us up when we played NY

Yeah I agree Chiefa, what I wrote about the trade wasn't necessarily meaning that it was that bad of a bad trade for Memphis, more that it was a REALLY good trade for the Clippers. Randolph is actually a pretty decent fit in Memphis (if he is a fit anywhere).

Well, at least fellow Knicks fans get a chuckle out of something. Two guys NY worked hard to finally dump are getting traded for each other? Memphis must be mad for picking up the contract for the round mound of round mounds. In essence, they would've traded the inexpensive expiring contract of Darko for Randolph? Makes no sense.

Say what you want Memphis fans, ZBo is a bonafide 20/10 PF, a position you DESPERATELY need. This is a great trade for both teams. I do think it's kind of funny though that Memphis seems to be stuck on Portland's sloppy seconds...Miles, Randolph, you guys wanted Outlaw REALLY bad...lol...just foolin' Good luck with this. ZBo isn't a bad guy, his entourage is what sucks.

I just don't get why they didn't wait out til the Paul Millsap, David Lee FA status played out. Or even yet, possibly acquire the expiring Boozer contract in a deal? Makes no sense this early into the off season.

I like the trade. The positives out weigh the negative. This trade opens up the paremeter and gives Memphis a offensive threat down low. Teams will have to double down on Zach or he will light them up. If it doesn't work it won't be hard to trade his big expiring contract next season. This is a excellent move by the grizzlies! Kodos to the Chris and his crew. Go Grizzilies. Argubly Zach is third best skilled offensive power forward in the league. Behind Pau and Duncan

I think Memphis got what they wanted, not having to play Marc Gasol at the 4.

Come on guys, not one of us have given credit where credit is do. We all, myself included, have bashed Mike Dunleavy since mid way into the season, now it's time to give up some props. There was no way I could see them being able to unload Randolph. Not only did they trade him but they got a serviceable player with a 8mil expiring contract, a 7mil trade exception, and positioned themselves to be major players come 2010. Dunleavy the coach may have done a horrible job but Dunvealy the GM is earning his keep and may deserve to be mentioned with the best of them.

Yes !!! thank you MIKE (i still hate you).
2010 cap space, Time for Griffin, 7 million trade exception, backup swingman, 3 point shooter and no punchies to amundson!! ERIC - will Q Rich bring the headbump back ?

@Alexboii: that's exactly what i was just thinking. Let's wait a few months, it won't take long until he gets moved again...

Great move for the Clippers, gaining Q-Rich to play behind Thornton and Gordon. He could come of the bench and is quite athletic and can shoot the 3-ball. I like that they also get a $7 million trade exception, as well as more playing time for Blake Griffin as well. Brian Skinner opting out of his contract also gives Griffin more minutes to eat into. Memphis gets a solid 20 points/10 rebounds per-night guy who plays absolutely little to no defense and is going to be toxic in a locker room with Gay, Conley Jr., Gasol, Arthur, Mayo and Thabeet among others. Smart stuff from the Clippers, and hopefully the Grizzlies can move him again relatively soon so team chemistry doesn't get obliterated by Randolph.
posted By PerthKid, 2 July 2009 1:44:18 AM
All the Clippers have to do now is fire Mike Dunleavy and replace him with a solid coach who can get them some wins and keep Baron Davis in check, and a smart and savvy GM who can pull off a few smart and logical moves to finally get them into the post-season for once. They shouldn't be the under-achievers of the Western Conference for too much longer.

This trade just makes the Pau Gasol trade look even more rediculous. They gave up a better player in Pau for Randolph, and the 8 mil expiring kwame deal that was the main part of the deal, is used in the trade exception. they just make no sense
posted By andrew, 2 July 2009 3:51:18 AM
that is the wird thing, they gave up pau gasol to get a player making even more money and they didn't event make an attempt at Paul Milsap or David Lee.

grizzlies trade pau got marc gasol, arthur, 2 first rd picks in next years draft and cap space..that trade made everything else possible..the grizzlies STILL have cap room (enough to be a player this year/or next)..most of Randolph's contract won't even be payed by the grizz (look it up)..pau gasol wanted out point blank, he didn't like it here and the people here didn't like him(not saying he's a bad guy, but EVERYONE knew he didn't want to be here)..and for the record the grizz made an attempt at david lee, but lee's looking for a $60 million dollar contract. plus, if you remember, the grizzlies tried to trade for lee a couple of years back and he made it clear that he didn't want to be here either and would not, under any circumstances, re-sign with the team when his contract was up...to be clear, i'm not a HUGE fan of this trade, but the grizz had a hole that needed to be filled and since no one is lining up to play in Memphis, they did what they felt they had to do! 1 thing is for sure no one else on this site can go on on about how heisley won't spend

As a Clipper fan I was stummped at the trade losing a 20/10 guy for QRich who is injury plauged and a shell of the player he used to be. But financially I see what they were doing and made a necessary move so that BGriff can play.. Props to Dunleavy and his GM skills, coachin' is another story, step down and get some new blood in there to Get My Boys Going!

I will never give credit to Mike Dunleavy. Dont get a Baron Davis and have him run your lame-ass half court offense every possesion. He was lucky that they won the lottery. VERY lucky.

@Seriously- Well said. I'm glad someone posted a knowledgeable comment. Faced with a player who doesn't want to be there(Lee) and a player who's team will match(Millsap) the Grizz made the best choice. Really glad that I'm not alone in seeing through to the heart of this deal.
