NBA AM: 76ers And Miller Far Apart?

Day 2 Getting Interesting: So far the free agent period has not been overly splashy, The Pistons spent the bulk of their cash yesterday on Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva and Portland looks poised to get a deal done with Hedo Turkoglu later today. Teams cannot sign actual contracts until after July 8th, so most of the meetings are about reaching terms so there is no real rush to make something happen, but that hasn't stopped teams from trying. Here is the latest:

76ers and Miller Not Close: The Philadelphia 76ers may lose Andre Miller. Word is that the 76ers are reluctant to tie themselves to a deal with large guarantees to Miller for more than two-years. A three- or four-year deal is possible, it would simply have to have Sixer favorable exits if Miller begins to break down and Miller's camp is not open to that. Portland GM Kevin Pritchard denied that his team was pondering a sign and trade scenario involving Miller as his team focuses on wining and dining Hedo Turkoglu in Portland today. Miller's camp is seeking a multi-year deal at or around the $10 million per season Andre earned last year. The Sixers are playing this situation tough as they don't want to be holding the bag when Miller starts to decline.

Lakers Won't Pay Ariza: Word is the L.A. Lakers will not go higher than the median exception for Trevor Ariza and that has not sat well with Ariza who will start entertaining other offers. Ariza is said to be the fall back option for the Trail Blazers, but the Cavaliers and Magic have expressed interest in Trevor. The word is if the Lakers do not increase their offer Trevor will go elsewhere for the median money rather than stay in L.A. which flies in the face of Trevor and his agents' recent comments about bleeding "purple and gold".

"All we're looking for is little appreciation for what Trevor has done," Ariza's agent David Lee said to the L.A. Times. "I don't think they believe Trevor is serious about leaving, and that's too bad. I didn't think we'd be in this situation. I am disappointed and surprised by what I thought would be some feelings for the people who have given you everything they've got."

The Lakers seem more committed to retaining Lamar Odom, who has gotten sniffs from the Phoenix Suns and the San Antonio Spurs – although both teams would need a sign-and-trade through the Lakers to make a deal with Odom happen. Ariza's camp was seeking a $7 to $8 million offer from the Lakers and did not get it, while Lamar Odom is looking for a deal in the $10 million range and may get closer to it with the Lakers than Ariza.

David Lee And Toronto? The Memphis Grizzlies were rumored to be interested in David Lee, however it seems ownership nixed the deal, and then made the trade for Zach Randolph, now David is talking to other teams. Sources close to the situation say Toronto and Portland have interest in Lee who is viewed as the fall back option. The Knicks opened free agency with a four-year, $32 million offer which is looking pretty good today.

Utah's Paul Millsap is considered the top power forward option and may get a sizable offer from the Oklahoma City Thunder, the problem with an offer to Millsap is his restricted free agent status, which ties up OKC's money for a week taking them out of the market while Utah decides to match the deal, which is a risk for the Thunder. The belief is if OKC's offer to Millsap gets matched David Lee could be a fall back option for the Thunder as well, although not at nearly the price. The Thunder have roughly $11 million in cap space are expected to tender an offer to Millsap in the $8 to $9 million per season range, and force the Jazz who are already over the Luxury tax to match it.

Lee could see an offer in the $7 to $8 million per season range from Oklahoma City if Utah matches Millsap, but such an offer is on pace with the Knicks' offer, and Lee too is a restricted free agent and New York likely would match it.

Campaigning For Artest?: Twitter is not always your friend. A post supposedly from Ron Artest saying - "THANKS A LOT HOUSTON :) I HAD A LOT OF FUN." did not come from Artest according to his agent, David Bauman. Bauman is sticking to his line that Houston is Artest's first option – likely because they can pay him more but word is filtering out that both Kobe Bryant and LeBron James have actively campaigned for Artest to join their respective teams. Artest seems to be giving serious consideration to a Laker or Cavalier offer, which would be a Median Contract in the $5 million per season range.

"All the superstars are very savvy and great recruiters," Bauman said to the Associated Press. "The superstars are sometimes even better recruiters than the general managers or their staffs. Between Kobe and Ron or LeBron and Ron, there are always conversations that occur. I think I'll just leave it at that at this point."

"Obviously, we'd love to do a deal with the Rockets," Bauman said. "At this point, I think it's premature. We really have to figure out what all the options are and what's the best place for Ron, both financially and from a playing perspective."

Shopping Chandler: The New Orleans Hornets are expected to be active in the coming weeks as they try and re-tool some of their roster. Word is Tyson Chandler, Devin Brown and even Morris Peterson could be on their way out of New Orleans and Dallas big man Brandon Bass could be their big free agent signing. He was in New Orleans yesterday and may have received an offer at or near the full median exception worth $5.6 million per season.

The Mavericks have said they would likely match any contract offer, only if Brandon wanted to remain a Maverick. The Hornets have a payroll among the highest in the NBA and are looking to create some breathing room and are reportedly engaged in talks to move several players.

No Love For Marion? The Toronto Raptors have been making news with their interest in Denver's Linas Kleiza and New York's David Lee – they struck out on Charlie Villanueva, but are expected to meet with Hedo Turkoglu and Lakers free agent Trevor Ariza. The one name that's not getting any play is Shawn Marion, although league sources say that's not due to lack of interest.

Because Marion is Toronto's free agent he can be re-signed using his so-called "bird rights" and because Marion is expected to sign a deal far less than the $17.8 he was paid last year he may be the last transaction completed by the Raptors. Sources close to the situation say both sides have exchange initial ideas and that things are progressing, but that the timing of events is necessary to create the cap space to add of players.

Blazers Deny Rudy Rift: Reports surfaced yesterday from ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan suggesting that Blazers forward Rudy Fernandez was not happy that the Blazers had engaged in talks with Magic free agent Hedo Turkoglu and that Fernandez was considering options in Europe rather than return to the Blazers next season. Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard and head coach Nate McMillan told Jason Quick of the Oregonian yesterday that they had spoken to Rudy recently about their off-season plans and he was onboard.

"The thing with Nate and I is we respect players - we both played - and we are always willing to talk,'' Pritchard said. "So if there really is an issue, we want him to know that we are open to talk about it."

McMillan said he spoke with Fernandez after the draft and explained some of the thinking behind the players they chose and the deals they made which included sending out Rudy's close friend Sergio Rodriquez to the Sacramento Kings.

"He's been fine,'' McMillan said. "It was just two days ago. He didn't say anything then, and he didn't say anything in our exit meetings."

According to ESPN, Fernandez has already been courted informally by European powerhouses Olympiacos, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and CSKA Moscow and could earn considerably more than the $1.1 million he's slated to earn in Portland next season.

The Pistons Make Moves: The Detroit Pistons spent the bulk of their cap space yesterday agreeing to terms on a five-year, $55 million with Bulls free agent Ben Gordon, while also reaching terms on a five-year, $35 million deal with Bucks free agent Charlie Villanueva. Neither deal can be signed until after July 8th, but both players have agreed to terms and contract signings are all but a formality.

This now puts the Pistons in the trade market, although sources say that Gordon and Richard Hamilton could play together a lot more effectively than Allen Iverson and Hamilton last season. Gordon told reporters in Detroit yesterday that he did not agree to the contract under any stipulations that he would start, in fact said he expected to be the 6th man behind Hamilton next season.

The Pistons still have some dollars left under the salary cap (roughly $3 million) and have again reached out to Antonio McDyess. The belief is McDyess - who is drawing attention from Orlando, Washington, Houston, Cleveland, San Antonio and Boston - will strongly consider returning to Detroit.

The Pistons are expected to turn their attention to their coaching search which now has one prominent name – Avery Johnson. Former coach and current broadcaster Doug Collins removed himself from consideration yesterday. Piston's president Joe Dumars said he hoped to have a coach in place before his team plays summer league in Las Vegas, giving him seven days to nail down his coach, which is expected to be Johnson. Leagues sources said yesterday that Avery is more than interested in the job; it's about coming to contract terms and hammering out details if Detroit is genuinely interested.

Hey Steve, I like the moves Detroit made but they still need a true big man. Any chance the P Stones trade for Chris Kaman or Tyson Chandler since the Hornets are on cost cutting mode?

why do all these Spanish players seem like divas?

The Pistons have a lot of duplication now, so it would seem that a front court trade would be in order.... we have heard for weeks that either Tayshaun Prince or Richard Hamilton would be dealt - I am not sure I'd do that - I like this roster, but if they did I could see them getting after a Kaman or Chandler, they have the room to take on the contract.

Not Divas... they are simply paid and treated better in Europe and Spain... both Rubio and Fernandez can earn more and play more over there than here - they just have dreams of being NBA All-Stars... they are not coming here to be bench players, they can be stars and starters over there.

Steve, is there any chance the Blazers would trade Rudy and if so would the Raptors be a possible destination

I think if Rudy were traded he'll say "the hell with the NBA..." and go play in Europe... I think the acquiring team would really have to sell Rudy that he'd start and be a big part of the team - On Trevor, if Trevor is gonna only cost you $5 million he is a far cheaper player than Hedo and very similar in skill set - not the shooter, but definitely a quality player - I wouldn't say Trevor is first or second on Orlando's board, but he solves a need... The Magic are talking to a number of guys so a lot depends on whats left when they can actually sign.

Do the Magic not see that Lewis-Anderson is a very solid and similar PF rotation? Get a cheap backup big who'll only play 10mins, and throw the MLE at various SF's who could be Pietrus' backup or vice versa. Ariza, Kleiza, Artest, G.Hill, Bowen.

I like the re-make of this Pistons team. Going into last year they were a very good, but not elite/title challenging caliber team with a very old roster. Now they only have 1 player over 30 with the rest of their guys entering their prime or being a couple years away from it. They aren't in the Boston/Cleveland/Orlando group, but they do have room for growth and can balance out their roster down the road.

Quick note on Rudy - he can't just leave the NBA and play in Europe. He has to be waived by his NBA team first - FIBA will honor the fact he is under contract to a NBA team and not allow him to sign a deal in Europe. That means the NBA team has to be convinced it's in their best interest to let him go, which may not be the easiest thing.

I heard rumors that Toronto wanted to make an offer to Hedo and I don't think that would be a good idea expecially for a 5 year deal a 3 year deal would make more sense if they really want him but at 5 years I really dont like the deal what do you think?

first and foremost, Rudy is guard not a forward. Secondly, that "report" by Sheridan was coming from a "league source." There were absolutely NO quotes from Rudy, or the Blazers, or anybody involved with the team. Writers and fans need to remember that this time of year is ruled by agents trying to get some kind of leverage for their player(s). I doubt very much Rudy is not looking forward to playing with Hedo. I think it's more likely he was upset that Sergio was dealt, but he's a professional, and he'll handle whatever comes about. That "report" was absolutely ridiculous fabrication.

Im confused by the statment that uro players get paid better and are treated better in europe.Rubio only made 97,000 last year and only played 25-28 min.he also has an 6-8 million buy out on an 97,000 contract? Dont sound like great treatment to me.Also european teams supposed to be in worse shape dollar wise than nba teams.

Top shelf players can command far better salaries and don;t get the run around - Rubio's case is not unique for young players, but established players don't like the rules of the NBA system... we all accept the salary cap and the draft process but for them thats not how business is done in Europe... Rubio made $97,000 last year for one of the smallest teams in Spain... if he returns this year he'll make $2 or $3 million euros --- thats better than a NBA deal in Minnesota.... Rudy or Ricky goes back to Spain they are rock stars - in the NBA they don't start - the NBA is a better lifestyle, everything is first class, but the crowded rosters and lack of playing time is not as appealing to International players

From our friends at Blazer's Edge - Acording to Marca Rudy talked to Efe Radio: 1º.- There´re always rumors and he knows about them from the press. 2º.- He hasn´t talked to his agents about him leaving the Blazers. He has only comented with them about the possibility of Turkoglu going to Portland. 3º.- He doesn´t close doors to any team from Europe or the NBA. 4º.- Asked about whether Torkoglu going to Portland might affect his playing time, he said: I want to play. We´ll have to talk with Portland and ask them how can I do it. More about the same interview in ACB.com " Turkoglu is a perimeter player and we are speaking about almost six for two positions. This makes me think that the team does not give me space for my work. I have demonstrated that I could be more of a factor." "I have been surprised with the minutes that I have played but if now they pick up a player in my position, that will stop my progression, and what I want is minutes so I can improve."

those concerns are not the same as wanting a trade or let out of his contract. Those concerns have been way overblown in the media. The report is bunk. We have our own sources here in Portland within the Blazers organization speaking on good authority from Rudy's own mouth that things he said were taken either out of context or blown out of proportion.
