Lakers and Lamar Talking Again: The L.A. Lakers and Lamar Odom are talking again. According to well placed sources not only did Lamar Odom reach out to Dr. Jerry Buss - the Lakers majority owner - himself, but apparently so did Laker star Kobe Bryant. Normally players stay out of each others contract discussions, but when ego and vanity got in the way of Odom's return several parties decided it was time for everyone to talk.

The Lakers offer is reportedly still unchanged, for three years at roughly $30 million. There was a four-year offer rumored to be worth $36 million, but sources say most of the fourth year was non-guaranteed and had a $3 million Laker buyout. The hold up on a deal seems to be that fourth year and that's something neither side seems to be able to agree on.

For the Lakers it is smart business to try and limit the length of Lamar's deal; no one knows what the economic structure of the NBA is going to be in three years and the Lakers' window for a championship is likely three more years. No one wants to eat a contract of an injured player and a fourth year on the deal would put Odom on the wrong side of 34 years old.

For Odom this may be his last big payday, and the appeal of Miami and Dallas' five-year offers is it guarantees a payday through 35. And while the dollars may be smaller when you factor in that $30 million for three years with the Lakers and then possibly three more years at or around the NBA minimum – Lamar's earning potential in the next five years is about equal in either scenario. What his camp is looking for is the Lakers to step up on the fourth year.

Sources near the situation have said for the better part of two weeks that both sides would reach a deal, so now that both sides are talking again a deal won't be far away.

Slow Week So Far: The second wave of free agency (the wave just after summer league) tends to be the slowest. There tends to be less pressure to get something done quickly, there is often more deliberation and for a lot of players this is where teams start value shopping and playing hard ball with the dollars they ultimately part with. Here are some notes from the front line:

Pacers Waive Tinsley: The Indiana Pacers finally parted ways with Jamaal Tinsley yesterday, reaching terms on a contract buyout. Tinsley was owed $14.7 million over the next two seasons; the buyout is believed to be worth $10.7 million. The Pacers were facing a pretty nasty arbitration battle that was to begin on Monday.

The buyout agreement comes after months of denials from the Pacers that they would even consider buying out Tinsley. The Pacers tried relentlessly to find a trade for Jamaal but like most teams that end up in a dispute with a player, they found little value in Tinsley as most interested teams offered worse contracts or far less talent hoping to get Tinsley on the cheap.

Pacers' sources said in Orlando two weeks ago that if Tinsley was agreeable to a deal that "worked for both sides" a deal would get done and it seems a $4 million savings was enough to make it happen. Tinsley has been training in Atlanta and is said to be in very good shape. He will hit the free agent market and is already talking with the 76ers and the Miami HEAT.

Nate And The Knicks: Nate Robinson and the New York Knicks may be closing in on a one-year deal worth upwards of $4 million. Robinson is a restricted free agent and interest across the league has been lukewarm mainly because teams knew that an offer in the $4 to $5 million per year range would get matched by the Knicks.

Robinson turned down a $10 million offer from Greek powerhouse Olympiacos this week and all signs point to a deal with the Knicks in the coming days. Robinson's camp has hinted that Nate's deal will get done after the Knicks resolve talks with David Lee who seems to be leaning towards returning to the Knicks as well, possibly taking their four-year, $36 million offer.

Arroyo And The 76ers?: Carlos Arroyo was in Las Vegas last week to support his Maccabi Tel Aviv teammate Omri Casspi in summer league play and to talk with NBA teams about a possible return to the league. Carlos said he had a great time playing in Israel and would have no problem returning for another year, but that he felt it was time to get back into the league and was talking with several teams including the Philadelphia 76ers.

Arroyo signed a three-year deal last summer with Maccabi that is said to have favorable exit language if he gets an NBA offer this year. Arroyo earned roughly $2.5 million from Maccabi last season and is said to be looking for at least a two-year NBA deal this summer.

What's The Big Deal?: I am sure by now you have seen the LeBron James dunk video [ebaum nation has a pretty good hi-res clip here]. Maybe it's just me, I'm not sure I get what all the fuss was about. It's not like Xavier's Jordan Crawford did anything spectacular. In fact this was somewhat anti-climatic. NIKE made this thing a story by seizing reporter's video tapes, and from the looks of it a lot of people taped this, so again what's the big deal? Did we all get duped into a big viral marketing gimmick? How much free exposure did LeBron James' Skill camp get out of this? Had anyone outside of Xavier really heard of Jordan Crawford? LeBron James gets dunked on a lot in the NBA, and this particular dunk was nothing overly special. Crawford made a nice play and got above the rim, it's not like he Frederic Weis'd LeBron. It's amazing what gets people excited isn't it?

Rubio's "News"?: The Ricky Rubio game continues, and while it seems every three or four days someone grabs a sound bite and runs it like it's news, a lot of it is not. The Rubio situation really has not changed, and a lot of this stuff that is making headlines is really the same story just said in a different way. Yesterday Rubio himself said in the clearest of terms that he would not be playing DKV Joventut next season.

"I want to continue with the club but, after everything that's happened, I don't think they're too comfortable having me in their squad," Rubio said Wednesday to the Associated Press. "I want to play in a winning team, on a team that can achieve many things."

The game here is to get Joventut to realize they won't get Ricky and they likely won't get the entire buyout, so how can we work this out. Timberwolves' team President David Kahn has inserted himself in this discussion and the hope is an agreement can be reached. The best case agreement is Joventut reduces the amount they want from Ricky (estimated at just over $6.6 million) – Rubio is slated to earn $2.7 million this season, $2.9 million next season and $3.1 million in year three of his rookie deal with the Timberwolves should he gain his release. There is belief Rubio will get some endorsement money, even in this economy, that could offset some of the buyout costs but the bulk of those dollars would still come from Ricky - Joventut will have to play ball for that to happen.

The Timberwolves can contribute up to $500,000 toward Rubio's buyout and little else. The belief among league sources is that Kahn will open the door to future talks regarding exhibition games and support from the Timberwolves, but first they have to work out a deal with Rubio.

There are two powerhouse Euroleague teams (Real Madrid and FC Barcelona) talking with Rubio and sources near Rubio view them as a real threat to this process. Both teams are willing to contribute far more than $500,000 to the buyout, but neither is willing to assume the total amount outright. It's believed both clubs have offers that are marginally better than what Ricky's rookie deal in the NBA would be, but again would still have Ricky contributing the bulk of his earning over the next three years to get his release.

Joventut is in a bad way financially, and the common belief is unless they get every penny they can out of Ricky, they may be out of business inside the next year which is why they are being so rigid with Rubio.

The Wolves can be a life-line of sorts, especially if they agree to exhibition games in Spain, that along with several million from Rubio might be enough to get a deal, and Ricky's comments this week are simply in support of that goal.

This is to the owner of the L.A Lakers,it's in your best interest of the team to sign Lamar Odom,so you can win another ring.If you don't sign him you will regret it for a long time.P.S Contract or Championship?

Is mortgaging the future of the team worth one more ring?...
posted By Chris, 23 July 2009 9:22:06 AM
Steve: do you really think bringing in odom is mortgaging the future? If you bring him back you have 4 legitimate shots to win a title with that core and after that a lot of contracts come off the books in which LA can re-load. This move puts LA in the top 5 for the next 4 years, if i'm LA i do it

I think a 4th year on a player over 30 is dangerous... your likely going to pay him to sit through an injury... I wouldn't risk a huge luxury tax bill on Lamar Odom at 34... keep in mind the Lakers will pay $20-$25 million in Luxury tax this year - north of $30 million next year and under a new CBA, they could be paying 40 million or more in taxes, if they are not smart about how they structure things... I'd go three years without blinking... that fourth year would have to have a games played clause or something that protects me from a huge injury...

The actual "dunk" was not the issue. The issue was and is Lebron's continued display of "---assness". This event on the heels of him walking off the court and hiding the the media he soo loves after the Celtics series is just further proof that Lebron is a "---". There really is no other word for it.

Steve, do you really think a rare chance for a title isn't worth the risk of an extra year of paying the tax and the potential injury? It's not like the Lakers don't make enough money to cover the tax anyways and while they have won a lot of titles and might be able to take them for granted there are a lot of teams and cities that would gladly take that risk if it came with having the luxury of having 3 productive bigs like the Lakers had and would have if they resign Odom.

PRNSTR910, I think part of Steve's point in the column is that this might have all been a marketing gimmick by Nike and Lebron for his camp and themselves. If they don't confiscate the video this story gets a little play for the dunk and not much more. With the way they treated it, it gets some negative press for them but a lot of press all the same.

I co-sign with PRN NIKE made it a big deaL!! Of course if they hid some video of Bron gettin smashed on you wanna see it. It was somewhat anti-climatic but it was pretty nasty. Again, who is Crawford compared to Bron??? Cmon, Steve, maybe your gettin old. Imagine what it felt like for that kid. Dunked on the EFFIN MVP of the NBA! And only Frederic Weis has ever been Frederic Weis'd you cant compare any dunk(cauz none compare..) to that...

We’re talking about the difference of $4-$6 million in comparison to being “one of the favorites next year” or “a potential dynasty.” Hence, it’s worth it to pay Lamar. And don’t give me that luxury tax BS. Fisher, Ammo, Farmar, Powell, Mbenga are all off the books this year. Vujacic is gone next year. Lakers should be in much better shape financially come Lamar year #4. Plus, Buss will make a TON in all those extra playoff games by that time. 4 at $36 or 4 at $40 with a buyout at $34 is absolutely FAIR for both sides. Let’s do it!!!
posted By Steve Kyler, 23 July 2009 10:33:16 AM
Two points - lets be clear - PAY LAMAR!!! - what I am saying is I can understand why the Lakers are playing tough, and if I am Mitch I push for a games played clause in year 3... Lamar plays in 50 or more games his 4th year gets guaranteed, that just insures your investing in a chance to win championships not paying Lamar $10 million to nurse a knee injury... 2nd - The lakers will have dollars drop off the cap, but the rate in whihc Andrew's contract is going up, the fact your gonna have to sign Kobe and Pau Gasol in two years means you have to be smart especially knowing the cap and the salary system are going backwards... you don't want a $30-$40 tax bill and have two players injured and be a lottery team.
posted By Jason Fleming, 23 July 2009 10:36:00 AM
And on top of that, all those guys mentioned as coming off - Farmar, Sasha, etc - you have to replace those players to field a team, and you have to pay them. You can't replace them all with minimum deals, though perhaps if you do that around Kobe, Pau, Bynum, Ron, and Lamar that's all you need. Oh yeah, and I co-sign with Steve - PAY LAMAR.

On the LeBron dunk stuff... again, I was unimpressed by the dunk, it wasn't like the Vince Carter dunk over him kind of thing... this was a normal dunk in a game, and LeBron was near him... its not like he broke LBJ down off the dribble and crammed on him... it was a nice play, it made Jordan Crawford a celebrity and I am sure it was a moment for him... but again A LOT more hype than substance - who wants to bet what shoe company Jordan Crawford signs with when he leaves Xaiver for the pros?
posted By No Blood No Foul, 23 July 2009 10:44:58 AM
Who wants to bet that Larry Bird wishes he had a do-over with Tinsley? Denver ALMOST traded Steven Hunter and Chucky Atkins for Tinsley and a draft pick, but the deal wasn't quite good enough so Denver called Detroit about Billups...and we all know what happened next. If Indiana had offered an extra draft pick to Denver (or maybe one without lottery protection), Indiana wouldn't be paying Tinsley $10.7 million to play somewhere else. Instead, they'd be sitting on two expiring contracts. Bird's skills as a GM are less then exemplary - Indiana deserves better.

This "pay Lamar" business is just dumb. The Lakers are offering Odom the best possible deal he can hope for. $30 million for 3 years + the likelihood he can play another year or two (or more) for the vet's minimum. That's financially identical to the deal that Miami offers (if not better if you consider Odom could get more than the minimum in years 4 and 5). The big difference with L.A. is that Odom can win a freaking championship, earn millions in endorsements, promote his movie career, etc. Why are Laker fans upset with Buss? Odom is the idiot here folks - no question.
posted By Steve Kyler, 23 July 2009 10:58:27 AM
Lets be clear - no one is earning a lot of money in endorsements... there is some change out there, but beyond the big boys the shoe money and the side stuff has dried up... unless your willing to do shopping mall openings and Bar Mitzvahs... whihc apparently is quite the money maker if your willing to hang with 13 years olds.

4 years and 38 million for odom is what LA should do, give him his 10 per the next 3 seasons and just guarantee half for the 4th year, i think waltons and vujacics contracts are bad and that is what is constricting the Lakers, you think mitch wouldnt want to go back in time and give turiaf his money and let vujacic walk

Steve, where do you think Tinsley will end upp??

Toolate - as out resident grumpy old man... the article is in fact about the top story of the day... it also includes tidbits on the the 76ers.. Pacers... Knicks and leBron with a little Rubio sprinkled in for flavor... The AM report is supposed to highlite the news of the day... If the Lakers make news, they get the spot.

guys your missing the age point.lamar is 29 and will be 33 at end of contract, keeps himself in great shape and is not an hi-wire act like koby is. He is mostly an low to the ground finnese slasher with a little muscle mixed in.Give him 10mil for for years. Now a days 33 is not old for most nba players.Guys like koby who at 30 is going to get maxed out at 6 years for 20-25mil is more likely to get hurt at 31-32-33etc. with his high flying agressive style of play and he already has lost an 1/2 step and some of the explosive quickness and jumping ability. The lakers with this core has an 3-4 year window th get it done, and remember that sanantonio, dallas are old teams and many teams are very young and teams like portland need to make moves to get more vet. help instead of sitting on their young potential so the window is there for 3-4 more titles ( not saying the will get them all) but its there. Also La.makes an ton of dollars from last 3 and next 4 deep runs in the playoffs and sold out arenas at home as well as at home, so pay the man as steve kyler says!! Ps. Its not lamars fault he is the last one to sign and its not right to say he gets you deep into tax country. Koby gasol and the rest got you thre also. Keep up the good articles steve this is a great site despite all the stupid #### some posters put out there.
