Gooden Solid Addition For Mavericks

When the Dallas Mavericks lost out on Orlando Magic restricted free agent Marcin Gortat, it was really a double-blow to their front court. While waiting to see if the Magic would match their offer sheet to Gortat, the Mavs allowed promising young power forward Brandon Bass to walk away . . .to those same Orlando Magic. So when Magic GM Otis Smith announced that he would match the Mavs' offer sheet for Gortat, there was more than a little steam coming out of the Mavs' front office. Losing Gortat meant that the next step in their summer plan - trading Erick Dampier - was no longer an easy option. Losing Bass meant they desperately needed front court help.

On Sunday the Mavericks took their first step towards solving their front court deficiency, agreeing to terms with NBA journeyman Drew Gooden on a one-year contract. Dallas will be Gooden's seventh NBA home after seven years in the league. Normally you would expect a player who has been moved as many times as Gooden to be undesirable in some way, but that's not the case here. Gooden is a solid role player, a veteran presence in the locker room, and - thanks largely to LeBron James - he brings a solid résumé of playoff experience, as well.

Like Brandon Bass, Gooden has a good mid-range game. The good news for Mavericks fans is that Gooden is more consistent than Bass, who seemed to have good games about three out of every five nights. Gooden will deliver the same effort night in and night out, and given enough playing time he's a solid double-double threat. He rebounds well, grabbing 7.9 boards per game over his career, hits 47% of his field goal attempts, and is an above average defender, as well. He should be a great addition, one who complements Jason Kidd nicely.

This is certainly not the Mavericks' last move of the offseason, as they still have a glaring need at the shooting guard position, but this move is certainly a giant leap forward in filling their front court needs. Gooden will pay huge dividends for the Dallas Mavericks in 2009-2010.

Love drew, but i think he's better with spurs but spurs already signed dice..duncan,dice, gooden, blair..that should be the best frontcourt!! goodluck drew!!

The Spurs are insanely good on paper . . .insanely good.

WHAT??? Does this writer know a darn thing about Drew Gooden? The very problem with Gooden, along with Gooden's inability to focus and his extremely low basketball IQ, is his very LACK of consistency. The guy disappears for games at a time. He is ANYTHING but dependable.

I think this is a very good signing by the Dallas Mavericks, they need a center or a forward-center and the only one that was prove to be that much better than Gooden at the position was probably Anderson Varejo, David Lee and Carlos Boozer. Marcin Gortat and many others where unproven or didn't fit the bill. This signing was more of a need than talent. Someone who play the position and be effective in the post. Gooden provides rebounding and scoring something the Dallas desperately needed.

Gooden and above average defense should never be in the same sentence. Also, I agree with alan t. Gooden is extremely inconsistent..night in and night out? sure effort might be there but not mental toughness and production

Alan T. To answer your question....no, this writer does not know much. This is just one more example. If you look at the end of the first paragraph you will see that Ingram writes that trading Dampier was in the Mavs' summer plan. This intimates that he is privy to what Mark and Donnie are doing and planning. This is not the case due to Damp's unique contract....it's fully non-guaranteed for the following year which means that even though the Mavs have NO caproom they are now positioned to S&T for any of the big name free-agents if they choose to leave their team. That other team could receive cash, picks and possibly a player instead of losing completely out if that player decides to walk. Plus, if they decided not to take a player in the trade they could waive Damp and have very little or no impact on their cap. This is not breaking news...this is well known among the Mavs faithful. Ingram does not know what he's talking about....at no time will Dampier be traded BEFORE next summer...and then he will most assuredly be traded. So as you can see Ingram is NOT privy to the Mavs' plans and really has no idea what he's talking about. Among the Mavs' faithful he basically has no credibility.

mavfan, though stating it a little more harshly than I would...and with a little more certainty on when Damp will be traded (which should be next summer, unless something overwhelming comes earlier) - I have to agree. Most informed Mav fans don't put much stock in Ingram's articles and/or opinions. Sorry Bill, nothing personal, but you've taken the time to dig quite a hole with most Mav fans.

When you sign a player such as Gooden, you sign him to fit a role, and not to start. Many people are expecting him to be some kind of star and that isn't happening, but what he does provide is depth at the center and powerforward spot. If the Dallas marvericks wanted a star at center, they probably would trade for one. Some names that comes to mind would be Troy Murphy, a healthy Chris kaman or Tyson Chandler. If not the Mavericks fan can forget about have a all around type of center, so many need to stop the false reality because it not going to happen to signing a free agent this year.

Uraine - I think most Mav fans are completely aware that a center is not going to be signed as a free agent this year, other than hopefully Hollins. Like most, I still feel there is a move or two coming...and hope it is something that solidifies Damp's place on the bench (don't forget, he can't average over 20 minutes a game for 70 games this season or the last year of his contract becomes guaranteed). I don't see any unreasonable hopes in the comments here.

i'm not a big fan of drew, but I think he'll be a good player off th bench..Im pretty sure he wont be a starter and the Mavs are still gearing up to add 1 or 2 more players(C and SG) while eliminating others from the roster..drew would be a solid backup to Dirk, and I agree that they could even run small ball together..Not a bad aquisition, but also not mind blowing..

Dude...You keep saying it, but the Mavs NEVER had any intention of moving Damp this summer. His contract is MUCH more valuable NEXT summer. All indications from the front office are that they never have had any plans to move him.

Oh, and the mavs do not have a glaring whole at SG. They have Howard, followed by Terry. If they got another shooting guard, they wouldn't have enough minutes to go around. They will add a backup shooter, but they roll at SG with who they got.

good pickup for the Mavs....Gooden can play...he's only 27...he can rebound and score a little bit and will fit nicely with this team...I know one thing this Dallas team is going to score a lot easier than it did last year...if they stay healthy i really see them winning 50-60 games next year

a glaring need at the shooting guard position? DO YOU EVEN WATCH MAVERICKS GAMES?
posted By RICO, 27 July 2009 2:15:01 PM
The glaring hole is the center position Mr. Ingram. This team is guard heavy. Have you looked at the roster Bill? At least your not repeating the dumb crap you said earlier about starting Carroll. I'm still chuckling over that dumb statement.
