Are The Knicks Next?: The New York Knicks have several things in the works but most of them seem to involve their own players. Word is the Knicks could be closing in on deals with Nate Robinson and David Lee that might take them out of the running for Bucks restricted free agent Ramon Sessions. It should be an interesting week as teams start closing in on deals, here are some notes for today:

Fishing For Rubio: Several days ago there were reports from Spain suggesting that Ricky Rubio was nearing a two-year deal with powerhouse Real Madrid. However since those reports things have gone silent. Timberwolves' president David Kahn who just returned from Spain told Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix recently that he doubted seriously that Rubio was closing in on a deal.

Sources near Rubio's camp have said for weeks to be careful about the Spanish media's reporting of Rubio as he is the hottest news going right now, and that the slightest hint of him staying in Spain is huge news.

Those same sources continue to classify the interest from Euroleague teams as a real threat, saying those teams are working hard to get in front of Ricky's family to try and sway him away from the NBA.

The latest news is that David Kahn's meeting with DKV Joventut was cordial and both sides had an open dialogue about Ricky's value to both teams, nothing was agreed upon, the Wolves offered to help in any way possible to expedite Ricky's release but their hands are tied with what they can offer.

There is continued belief that Joventut's best option may be to sell Rubio's contract outright and that would present an entirely new wrinkle for both sides as it would not yield Rubio the millions other teams are offering, and he'd still be tied to the enormous contract buyout for two more years.

Mavs Nab Gooden: The Dallas Mavericks reached terms with forward Drew Gooden on a one-year, $5 million deal ($4.5 million is guaranteed). The Gooden signing is a solid move for the Mavericks who gain some much needed size and offense in the front court and are not tied to Gooden long-term.

The Mavericks may end up losing center Ryan Hollins, who has been talking with the Indiana Pacers about a deal, however the Pacers' recent signing of Solomon Jones to a two-year deal at the NBA minimum might derail those plans.

The Mavericks still have roughly $800,000 of their median exception to use on additional players. The Mavericks have been linked recently to the Celtics free agent forward Leon Powe and the remaining dollars the Mavericks possess could go in his direction if Powe passes on the Cavaliers, who are also talking with him.

The Mavericks roster stands at 15 contracts.

Flip Murray Headed To Philadelphia? The 76ers have been talking to reserve caliber guards for the past two weeks, most recently making an offer to C.J. Watson that was turned away.

Word today is they may be closing in on an agreement with Ronald "Flip" Murray, who is considering a two-year deal with the 76ers.

The 76ers are also talking with Ty Lue, Jason Hart, Carlos Arroyo, Bobby Jackson, Juan Dixon, Brevin Knight and Luther Head.

David Lee and Lil' Nate: With the free agent market drying up the consensus around the Knicks is that they may not lose restricted free agents David Lee and Nate Robinson as once expected - in fact, both players seem to be warming up to the idea of one-year deals with the Knicks and becoming unrestricted free agents next year. Reports from the region suggest that Robinson may have reached terms on a one-year, $5 million deal, while David Lee is rumored to have a $7.5 million offer on the table.

Lee's camp is still pushing for long-term security and with so many teams interested in a sign-and-trade deals Lee's camp is holding out that a bigger longer deal can be obtained.

At the end of the day it's looking more and more likely that both players take one-year offers and stay in New York than actually finding the deals they seek elsewhere, especially not as restricted free agents.

Big Baby To New Jersey? Justin Poulin of Celtics Stuff Live, a weekly Celtics' TV show on Comcast in Boston, is suggesting that a sign-and-trade deal involving forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis may be in the works.

The rumored deal would send Davis to the New Jersey Nets in a deal that would return forward Yi Jianlian, who is slated to earn just over $3 million this season.

The Nets do hold a Traded Player Exception from the Vince Carter trade and could absorb any Base-Year Compensation differences. Boston president Danny Ainge has been a long-time admirer of Yi, while the Nets have been the heaviest suitor for Big Baby over the past two weeks. Sources near either team could not confirm the deal.

More On Iverson and Warrick: The Memphis Grizzlies recently rescinded their Qualifying Offer to free agent Hakim Warrick, in essence setting him free to find a deal elsewhere and word is six teams are in hot pursuit. The Grizzlies still retain his Bird Rights, so they could offer to match anything he gets in free agency – they just do not get to hold him hostage. The interesting part of the news is the motivations behind it. Grizzlies' owner Michael Heisley described the move to Scott Cacciola of the Memphis Commercial Appeal as letting Warrick explore his value and for the Grizzlies to free up space for future moves.

"I think we decided we wanted some flexibility," Heisley said. "But the idea that there is a target is completely false. As for Iverson, I think he's trying to get with a team like L.A. (Clippers) or Miami or someone like that.

"Frankly, I've tried to tell everybody that I don't think we're at the top of Iverson's list, but no one wants to listen. All it is, we're basically opening up cap room for us."

Heisley did not rule out Warrick returning to the Grizzlies, saying his club would be open to matching offers he received.

"We may ultimately sign him again, but I'm not sure we liked the idea of signing him to a one-year contract," Heisley said. "So I think that what we're doing is, in effect, saying, 'If you can get an offer from somebody else, go get it.'"

IN RELATED: There is there is this recurring commentary that tends to surface whenever we comment on Allen Iverson's free agency, and I want to be clear: We're not covering Allen because it's a slow news day or we have some vendetta against AI, we are covering him because #1 – he's in the news and #2 – he is the top free agent left unsigned. Once he reaches a deal we'll move on to the next unsigned free agent on the list, that's how it works.

Nate McMillan Thrilled With Miller: Trail Blazers' head coach Nate McMillan was never the most athletic player in the game, but he ended up with a 12-year NBA career because he had an incredible basketball IQ, one that made him suited to coach in the NBA. It should come as no surprise he was thrilled when the Blazers landed point guard Andre Miller as a free agent.

"I felt like I kind of knew him already," McMillan said to Jason Quick of The Oregonian. "Because in a sense, we were similar as players, as far as not being great scorers or shooters, but we made our teams better because of our feel for the game and our I.Q."

"We wanted to raise our I.Q., and we do with this," McMillan said. "He just has a feel for the game. He will be a guy who will know the sets, put players in their spots."

"The big thing is that we were able to raise our basketball IQ without giving up guys," McMillan said. "It's almost like we got Miller for Sergio (Rodriguez). And now, this is an opportunity for Bayless to be tutored by (Miller)."

The Blazers could find themselves with a little more change in their pockets too; word is the Blazers have petitioned the league to remove the salary cap holds for Petteri Koponen, Joel Freeland and Victor Claver. If the NBA approves the petition, the Blazers could open up as much as $2.6 million in additional cap space.

I wonder why we think people on this site have a vendetta against AI?..........Anyway, is this a review of the week or something. you made this long when you didn't have to. The only new "news" is that flip might sign with Philly. Gooden has been mentioned like 4 times on this site before you wrote. lol. .............I also find it funny that a week ago you would have wrote the opposite story to what you wrote this week. Apparently sessions was in NY, Lee in Utah/Portland, Nate in Europe. I still love the site though but this is a poor effort.

I always laugh at the AI hate on this site. That dude has more talent his is little finger than the writers on this site have in heir whole body. He took a terrible team to the finals and will play through injuries. But true...he is rude to the media and bloggers of the world. Of course AI is news but good work putting the disclaimer into cover yourself. Lets see how long till you get your George Bush on and limit my FREE SPEECH.

The Freedom of Speech does not entitle you to post things on a website... if you want to go stand in the street and expound your thoughts you have the right, you want to start your own site - that too is your right, but the first amendment does not give you rights on a website...

steve you guys and other sports site write about allen iverson cause you all know that the people want to know what's going on.reguardless of his so called lame duck status that media outlets like to portray,he is still for some reason one of the most relevant players in the league.people respond to this guy, that's why you guys get so many responses when it comes to an allen iverson artical.a water from another site has even admitted that their site would throw iverson's picture next to the title of a site and include him some way in the artical and the hits on that artical become off the charts.the fans beef with hw writers is that most of you seem to have taken joy in writing allen iverson can't play anymore articals(one of your writers said this).weather he starts or not I think that iverson could beat out 70% of the guards in the league for their spot in training camp.so before you guys continue to put him in a wheelchair, europe,or seat selling bench player let's wait til the ball goes up in the air and see who's gonna be standing.you know every yr the media likes hype up the so called young studs to only watch them get out played by the wiley vets!

Here is the funniest part about this - I like Allen... as a person and a player, but I also understand that his time in the NBA - meaning his style of play has passed - the league is no longer an isolation game, and isolation players are finding it harder and harder to find roles in the league... Its not just Iverson - Steve Francis and Stephon Marbury are in the same boat... but I agree - Iverson has a huge fan base, and there is a tremendous amount of interest in where he lands.

steve, iverson's problem is his ego not his game.and when did this all this no room for good isolation players come about?every single team in the league run a lot of isolation plays all game long.it's good for other players but not iverson?people just want to know why other players haven't been blasted the way iverson has throughout his career.i seen articals that said iverson's 13 shots a game broke the pistons but I have yet to see and artical blasting rip for his very unprofessional attitude he displayed all last season and the season b4 that.rip was a terrible teammate last season.

Steve, you created this discussion in the beginning, with your almost paranoid comments about AI. He is old news and arguably NOT the best remaining free agent, especially if restricted FA's are the discussion, two of whom you mentioned at the top of your article.

AI as the top free agent left? I guess you people haven't heard about this guy named Lamar Odom?
posted By bozack, 27 July 2009 11:01:12 AM
how about mentioning that Iverson is one of the best players to watch if you are a young guy the size of Iverson and you want to know how to score in the midst of big men. I have a young son and I have him watch Iverson because A.I. is one of the smartest scorers I have ever seen especially at his size. He knows how to use his body to draw fouls, he knows how to use the rim to defend against shot blockers, he knows how to fade away from taller guys who are guarding him and he is the best finisher I have ever seen at that size. As far as isolation plays are concerned...I have seen many players such as kobe, lebron, wade, pierce etc. go one on one in the half court...don't know why this does not pertain to Iverson.

Is there really any debate on where Lamar is going to sign?... he's either signing with the Lakers or going to Miami...

i hope that yi for davis is not going to happen! no way can glen davis keep up with the nets in transition or share the ball with a center that knows how to use it in lopez. kendrick let davis take all those shots it wont happen in nj.

These writers are just telling the truth and all you AI fans just can't handle it. Iverson quit on the pistons last season because he refused to accept being a role player. Also Iverson is a 1 on 1 player in a league that is evolving much more into a TEAM sport. It worked in the 90's but the rules have changed and the best teams seem to have the most balanced talent. If what the writers were saying isn't true Iverson would of found a team by now. And when he does find a team their number one reason for taking him will probably be because he sells tickets. He is a very popular player with fans but not so much among people involved in the NBA
posted By bozack, 27 July 2009 11:20:38 AM
Derek, I respectfully disagree with you. When Iverson was traded to the Pistons, the organization and some of the Pistons players did a bad job of adjusting to the type of player Iverson is. I would actually say the opposite, Iverson tried very hard to adjust his game to the Pistons, but many of those players were stuck in their ways because they had run the same system for years. Rip also openly complained about his role, but somehow that gets whitewashed and no one ever comments on that. If you don't believe me check out the archives on the detroit free press website. How many of the Pistons games did you watch last year? Because I can say without a doubt Iverson tried to blend in with his teammates, but with inept coaching and the decision to stick with Rodney Stuckey and also the decision not to become more of a running team, ultimately put Iverson in a no win situation. In addition, I think many of the Iverson supporters (including myself) feel that some of the writers (including some on this website)seem to enjoy the situation Iverson is in. I don't mind objective criticism of any player but when I start hearing about how Iverson is not a top talent anymore or how there's many other people that a writer would rather watch than Iverson it becomes clear to me that some writers have a personal vendetta against A.I. BTW dwayne wade gets a lot of one on one opportunities and so do players like kobe, lebron, pierce and other prominent scorers in our league. In addition, I don't care what the league is moving away from, you are always going to need players who can make their own shot and or make shots for others. Why do you think guys like Korver, Sczerbiak and other jump shooters have spots on rosters because they have guys whose one on one ability leaves them open for shots.
posted By Derek, 27 July 2009 11:39:48 AM
Bozack.. You do bring up some good points. How Hamilton reacted and acted was over looked by the media and Iverson had a lot of the negative attention. But thats because he is Allen Iverson and people want to read (wether good or bad) about him, not so much Hamilton. But ultimately he quit on the team and really just stopped playing. Don't get me wrong Iverson is a warrior and in his prime one of the most exciting players to watch. I think his only problem is he still thinks he is that player. I dont think Iverson is a top 20 player and whatever team he goes to he's going to take his shots and still try to be the number 1 option. The players you mentioned are all the leaders of their respective squads and also in their prime. Whatever team iverson goes to this is not going to be the case. If he could accept being the player teams want him to be then I would be all for him. But how can you take a player who would rather quit then come in off the bench. He has openly said this. Iverson's mentality is himself first then the team and thats why I beleive he is not a good addition to any team in this stage of his career. Unless it's memphis there dyin over there.
posted By bozack, 27 July 2009 11:51:01 AM
I will give you this point Derek...I think one of Iverson's biggest mistakes was making the comment that he would rather retire than come off the bench. I was listening to a Stephen A. Smith podcast and he said the same thing. A.I. should have just bit his lip and finished out the season as best he could because he already has a reputation at least amongst some owners and front office personnel that he can be difficult to manage and coach. Point taken on that point, but the funny thing is as detrimental as that is to his career it's the same reason people love him for his honesty, his passion and love for the game. I was watching his press conference at his annual charity tournament in Hampton, Va where he was giving out some scholarships and he welled up when he was talking about all of the hits he takes from writers, the media and some fans in general...this guy always gives you raw emotion and though some may criticize his style of play, his shot selection etc..the guy has more heart than most of the players that have come through the league. I just want his name and legacy respected, just like Hoopsworld writers want their work and journalistic endeavors acknowledged and appreciated.

I can respect that. He should and hopefully will be remembered for the great player he was in Philadelphia.
posted By Steve Kyler, 27 July 2009 12:55:31 PM
I think he has to find the "Gary Payton" situation - remember those final years in Milwaukee were brutal for GP... he lands in LA and finds a group he could play with and learns to play a role, he goes on to Miami and gets a ring... Iverson is going through that tough transition from being the man 30 shots a night, to being a part of a team - one GM is gonna take a risk on him - he;s gonna find out he does not have to be the man to win and win big and he'll move on to the next part of his career where he's deep in the playoffs killing guys from the bench - but getting there is a painful process and for a guy that teams are openly concerned about - its even harder... don't make this about hate for AI... he's gotta find the right spot.

Steve - you mention in your article that "The Mavericks still have roughly $800,000 of their median exception to use on additional players." -- isn't want left of the mid-level exception essentially worthless once it is this low, as teams can always sign players to minimum contracts (e.g. veteran's minimum)? Thanks
posted By Steve Kyler, 27 July 2009 2:55:29 PM
The minimum salary for players with more than 2 years of services is $825,497 --- that space would be useful if the Mavericks wanted to sign say 2nd rounder Amhad Nivins to a deal and he's getting offers in Europe - it has value, especially for younger players.

Rob, Did you just make a statement saying that AI is more talented than the Writers? Now I've heard it all. Do you think AI can write like they can?

Rob it's awesome of you to grace us with your presence here even though it must go against your better judgement (considering how much Hoopsworld writers suck apparently). I bet your schedule was booked pretty solid and I would just like you to know that we all appreciate you juggling things a bit to be able to make the time to read Steve's article and make a few posts. I had no idea you were such a patriot by the way! I bet you were up in the front lines with Limbaugh and the Tea Bagger movement a few months back... You're doing God's work son. Truly remarkable.

No worries Rob, I have a feeling you may just beat me there. I love how people take our freedoms in this country for granted and have no idea about the responsibilities that come along with said freedoms. Your freedom of speech is generally granted here on this site (which as Steve pointed out is NOT required) but as soon as you use your freedom of speech in a hateful manor do not be suprised when people respond in a similar fashion or ignore/delete your comment. I personally commend Steve for occasionally deleting some of the drivel that your little mind comes up with. Freedom of speech is not a black and white topic. Like most aspects of life it is a topic that exists in the gray area. Unfortunately it is generally people like yourself that feel the need to push our freedoms to the extreme (simply to get a rise out of people) that generally leads to the need for regulation. So I would like to personally thank you for being that guy. I bet nothing is ever your fault, it is always someone else's. Commy? I got a good laugh out of that one. Do you even know ANYTHING about communism? McCarthyism in classic fashion...
