Good article - it puts things in perspective. I STILL think L.O. stays. As much as I couldn't bear the thought of him leaving a couple of weeks ago, it doesn't seem as terrible now, because if he leaves it's because he wanted to leave. He got a great offer (or offers) from the Lakers. On another note, and I know you made it up, but I would hope the Lakers wouldn't trade L.O. for Przybilla and Bayless!. Przybilla is solid ... I think Bayless isn't going to be any better than Farmar.

When you have a genius for an agent, this is where you find yourself. The team you want to stay with has lowered their offer because you and your agent played hard ball and talked with Dallas and Miami which only had the MLE to offer anyway, hence the genius.
The agent is supposed to provide sound advices not idiotic ones. The really bad part is the genius still get paid regardless where LO signs, even though he just screwed his client royally. What a great job the genius has!!!

Yes ... Odom surely wants the greatest amount of money for the greatest number of years (with player options not team options in latter years). Those aspects are more important to him than wins and championships, clearly. Perhaps at play too is a desire to get back to 35+ minutes per game and increasing his numbers. That's all fine, but it does go against how he presented himself and his desire to retire in L.A., etc. throughout the season, and what was supposedly most important to him, etc. Probably his agent was (is) exploring sign & trade possibilities to get a 5-year $40,45,50 million deal somewhere. Fortunately, the Lakers aren't entertaining that, apparently (as the article notes). Now, L.O. and his agent find themselves trying to get the Lakers to increase the offer (years) without any financial leverage ... just the leverage of possibly leaving for Miami. The Lakers don't really have any leverage either ... other than what they consider a better financial offer (and championship opportunity) than he can get anywhere else. As far as teammates go, he's wanted by both teams. So, both parties (L.O. and the Lakers) can wait and do nothing until either L.O. gives up and takes a contract he really doesn't want in Miami, or agrees to whatever the Lakers are offering now; or the Lakers budge and improve their offer to the point that L.O. accepts it. I think for him to go to Miami would take the Lakers to finally say "take it or leave it".

Hey Eric Pincus! Do you know if the Lakers have any interest in a tryout for Jonathan Bender? He's making a comeback. Bender left the league because of a degenerative knee.

Excellent article - as always Eric. Your superb understanding of NBA rules, nuances and the complicated spending rules always show. I'm glad you didn't report speculated numbers and rumors, that is what separates you from other writers and adds professionalism to your articles. With so much speculation going on with the Lamar/Lakers negotiations it is nice to get the real scoop here.
I think that if the Lakers don't sign Lamar it would probably mean much of those L.O. end-of-game minutes would fall on Bynum's shoulders (as pointed out in the article that Bynum will need to step up). So Drew would be thrown into the fire big-time.
One last thing, I think that most-likely if Lamar was going to leave to Miami that he probably would have already done so, I'm basing that on just a feeling, but neither side has really cried and whined to the press. It seems like an impasse that will get resolved when L.O. and his agent Schwartz decide that 'enough is enough' and call the Lakers and sit down to hammer something out, it's just a matter of time. L.O. & agent are just being very patient, but in the end it's all about positioning. Buss is the master poker-player and an excellent negotiator, lowering the offer will make it seem that when the time comes and they do sit down (hopefully!) simply getting back to the original offer the Lakers gave Lamar would be a victory for L.O., and the Lakers too.

I want odom back but Bynum is set to make 12 million next season. Who would get more minutes? With odom we would be chasing after championships but would bynums develpment take a hit? Then what, would we be paying 12 million to a guy sitting on the bench the next three years?

Thanks for the comments - no word on Bender - EP

I don't understand what ODOM is thinking!!!! He's a tremendous basketball player that could go down as a legend, a huge part of the Lakers next championship run, or he can go to Miami be a five seed hang around for the next 5 years and retire. He's going to be 30 in november hes too young to sign for the MLE. LO sign the 3yr contract with LA then you can still get a 2yr 10 million dollar contract from the lakers or a another team. Mcdyess just signed for that and he's old. Hopefully ODOM does the right thing.

I am not convinced the Lakers would be that worse off without Odom. I think Bynum has a real chance to become a major contributor this year, and play big minutes. Plus Artest, due to his size (6-7, 260), can play some minutes at the four, with Luke getting a little more playing time at the 3 (or Kobe at the 3 with Sasha at the 2 if Sasha can remember how to play basketball). I also believe that Shannon Brown will improve his game this year (like Ariza last year), improving our bench play.

Odoms agent wants Lamar to sign 5 years for $35 million cause he gets more money than the 3 years @ $27 million. The agent might not even be representing Lamar in 3 years. He's out for what he can get right now

Hey, this is from above: "If he [second-round draft pick Chinemelu Elonu] does come to camp, he'd be a long shot to make the team and the Lakers would ultimately lose his rights." Could somebody please explain how LA would lose his rights? Thanks!

Eric, now with Odom resigned and Sun released, can you expand further on possible roster moves? Is Gaffney only expected to be a part of their expanded training camp roster, or does he have a decent chance of making the final roster? Second, if, as you surmise, Morrison, Farmer, or even Vujacic are moved, are their positions likely to be filled, ala Sheldon Williams (minimum contract) or is the team more interested at this time in just lowering payroll? In the case of Farmer or Vujacic, would the team not want to start looking for an inexpensive third guard to begin grooming? Finally, Gaffney sounds like someone they might want to keep on the roster for awhile (a good candidate for the D-league?), but would they do that with a 13-man roster?

Update: Sheldon Williams is reportedly ready to sign with Boston. The Laker scouts seem to have a pretty good eye for talent, so lets see how he does. Hopefully, he is not a factor should the two teams meet in the finals next June.
