Stephen Jackson to Denver a Possibility?

When Denver Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien recently mentioned to Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post that his team is never afraid of making a big trade, (which, by the way, is 100 percent supported by this front office's history) many in Denver started speculating about potential deals.  While teams don't often make major deals early in the season, Denver also bucked that trend by dealing for Chauncey Billups on November 3rd of last year.  Add to that the fact that Denver still has a hefty Traded Player Exception (TPE) in its back pocket that expires on November 3rd of this year from the aforementioned Billups' deal and it's easy to understand why people's imaginations are running wild.

The name that seems to surface most frequently, for obvious reasons given his recent trade request, is disgruntled Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Jackson.  There has been speculation in Denver that the Nuggets could cash in the team's largest TPE in exchange for Jackson.

While this sounds good on paper there is one major problem: Denver's largest TPE has been whittled down to just $7.4 million as a result of the moves the team made this summer.  Meanwhile, Jackson is scheduled to make $7,650,000.  What this means is that Denver does not have enough money left on the team's largest exception to acquire Jackson.  Moreover, since teams can't combine exceptions and also can't send out players along with the exception, the Nuggets simply can't acquire Stephen Jackson with its TPE.

Sorry to rain on the parade, folks, but Jackson is likely not coming to Denver -- at least not via the Nuggets' TPE.  And given the fact J.R. Smith is due less money, is younger, and has a shorter contract, the Nuggets would have likely been content without Jackson, anyway.  Whatever the case, the debate about Jackson coming to Denver via the team's trade exception is an academic one.

Sources close to the team indicated that the Nuggets likely will not use the team's largest trade exception prior to its expiration date of November 3rd on any player.  There simply haven't been any offers worth listening to.  It's also worth noting that most teams around the league aren't interested in making big deals early in the season.  Instead, teams are trying to get a feel for what they have.

If you're a Nuggets' fan the TPE to keep an eye on is the one the team acquired in the Chucky Atkins deal last January that is valued at approximately $3.3 million.  That exception is due to expire on January 7th of 2010.  By that time the Nuggets will have had ample opportunity to evaluate its roster and other teams who came out of the gates slow may be looking to slash payroll and/or shakeup the roster meaning there will likely be more teams around the league willing to swing a deal.

I was under teh impression that you have to be in the 25% of the salary to trade players. How would that not apply?

I thought the trade exeption was part of the Camby deal. The Billups deal also included McDyess, to match the salaries

hellooo and mo are right to jump on you for your misleading story heading, which you clearly contradict in the body of the story. You are playing dirty, my friend. You are misleading the reader. False advertising, whatever you want to call it. You are a much better writer than that. Let's stop that nonsense. Even Steve wouldn't do something that egregious, would he?

Guys, guys. Look at the title again: "Stephen Jackson to Denver a Possibility?" It's a question, man, and Heath is answering it with this article with a "No." Now, if the title said "Stephen Jackson to Denver a Possibility" that's when you jump him. C'mon guys, you're better than that.

Look at it this way. If your bestfriend says "dude, I'm ****ing your sister?" or "dude, I'm ****ing your sister." That's a big difference. Think about it.

Ay yo Travis, do you know if the Nuggets dancers accept attractive male groupies after the game? Hit me back bro and props on the good work.

I sure hope they don't pull this trade. Stephen Jackson is a stupid player and would not help young players like JR and Melo develop a feeling for the right shot selection.

Misleading caption. Steve did it for sure.

Steve has to be behind this somehow. My man Travis would not stoop to that kind of trick.
