Michael Redd is entering his seventh NBA season in 2007-08 and he is excited. After a season when Milwaukee was unable to stay healthy, the Bucks will start from Day One with a healthy roster, outside of Andrew Bogut. Although the Bucks compete in one of the toughest divisions in the league, this may just be the year they return to the playoffs.
In an empty visitor's locker room inside the Target Center before the Bucks preseason loss Friday night, Redd spoke with HOOPSWORLD.
The regular season begins this coming week. As the season approaches, what do you think of your team?
Well, I think we have a great opportunity to do great things this year. It all comes down to our chemistry, developing that chemistry, which we're trying to do now in training camp and preseason. Also, being able to trust one another, offensively and defensively. If we can accomplish those things, we can do some great things this year.
Does this year's Bucks team have the potential to be the best Milwaukee team since Ray Allen, Glenn Robinson and Sam Cassell were in town?
We really do. The key is to win the championship, so that's our ultimate goal. I think we have an awesome opportunity, but we've got to stay healthy though. That's the key. Last year, we were hit by the injury bug a lot and it hurt us. We've got to stay healthy. If we can stay healthy, I like our chances.
How excited are you to have Desmond Mason back, as well as Charlie Bell, who never really left this season?
Mo either. Mo was a free agent as well. We're glad to have those guys back because they're key parts of our team. Obviously, Mo had an outstanding year last year. Charlie as well, coming off the bench and providing that energy. Desmond is energy and a defensive prowess, so I like our team. It's just a matter of us night in and night out really playing together.
What do you believe is the biggest strength of this team this season?
The biggest strength we have right now is how hard we play. We're a team that's going to go out and compete on every possession. It may not be perfect, but from what I've seen in the preseason, we're going to play hard.
So, of course, what's this team's biggest weakness right now?
Weakness? Obviously, I think our offense still needs a lot of work. We haven't put all of our sets in yet, so we're still working on our offense. Playing hard and playing defense will cover up the offense on a lot of nights.
Is health the key factor in the Bucks competing with Cleveland, Detroit, Miami and Boston this season?
I think it's just playing hard night in and night out and trusting one another. You can't overemphasize trust enough, offensively and defensively. Making the extra pass, being unselfish and also being unselfish on the defensive end with help defense. We've got a lot of talent. It's just a matter of us doing those things and they're simple things.
Redd proved himself to be a leader both on and off the court years ago. Now with the talent surrounding him he has been asking for, things could be looking up in Milwaukee this season.
