Has Kobe Already Checked Out?

A Kobe Bryant who lets an almost certain victory slip away without even mustering a whimper is a defeated Kobe Bryant.

A Kobe Bryant who scores just eight points after the first quarter is a surrendering Kobe Bryant.

A Kobe Bryant who doesn't attempt a free throw or even go near the lane as if he's suddenly allergic to paint is a Kobe Bryant who is resigned.

Has Kobe Bryant completely given up on a Lakers team clearly on a collision course with stinking, rotten mediocrity? That certainly seemed to be the case last week when Bryant sat idly by in shocking losses to Utah (a rout) and Orlando (a collapse).

Everyone has their theories on Bryant's level of commitment to this Lakers team. Every expression is judged and every quote is dissected in hopes of shedding some light on whether Bryant has already pulled the chute on the season.

It was downright shocking to see Bryant do so little Sunday night to keep his Lakers from losing 104-97. His 19-point first quarter was the stuff of legends with four 3-pointers and a three-point play to boot. But after that, his focus seemed to stray and his desire seemed to wane. Bryant didn't attempt a 3-pointer or a free throw in the final quarter leaving most at Staples Center – Phil Jackson, included – to wonder if Bryant was mentally disengaged.

"I don't know, I was actually asking the coaches what they thought," Jackson muttered afterward. "I thought he had some real good post-up position out there, but just didn't turn around and shoot the ball in the post, which is one of his better things. He's waiting for something else to happen perhaps."

This particular scene I witnessed at the Lakers practice facility in El Segundo told me all I needed to know about Bryant's hit-and-miss commitment:

The Lakers scrimmaged last Saturday at their practice facility for more than a half-hour with Lamar Odom's team defeating Luke Walton's team. Notice, Kobe wasn't on either team. Neither was banged-up veteran Derek Fisher, but at least the veteran captain sat courtside watching intently and encouraging his teammates.

After the scrimmage, both teams ran wind sprints - Odom's winners running two laps and Walton's losers getting five trips up and down the court. Still, no Kobe.

The Lakers lined up for free throws, needing to make 80 percent for the team to avoid running more. Three misses result in another half-dozen sprints. Again, no Kobe – his teammates certainly could have used him with him being as solid a free-throw shooter as the Lakers have - in sight.

Finally, Coach Phil Jackson ends the madness and the team comes to the middle of the court for one last bit of advice and game prep. The players put their hands in the middle, symbolically representing a team united.

Yep, you guessed it. No Kobe Bryant in the huddle, on the court or maybe in the same zip code as his teammates. Bryant, apparently getting treatment on his surgically repaired knee, instead slipped out of the Lakers facility a handful of minutes after the practice session was complete dressed in a crisp black warm-up suit.

I understand superstar players take practices off every day during the NBA season, and certainly a player who goes as hard as Bryant does deserves a day off from the grind from time to time.

But to not even join his teammates during the hands-in-the-middle routine? How can this possibly be good for the Lakers? How can this possibly be good for team unity? How can it possibly be good for Bryant's desires to remain a part of this team?

Former Laker Brian Cook, who was traded to the Orlando Magic along with small forward Maurice Evans on Nov. 20, said he's happy to be out of Laker land where every day was seemingly a new drama with Bryant. Cook said there most definitely were some tense times in training camp following an offseason in which Bryant's shredded his teammates and expressed the same desire to leave the Lakers that a person would trying to escape a burning building.

"When training camp opened there were a lot of distractions because of the way Kobe talked about the team over the summer," Cook admitted. "But once the team came together it was really humbling to Kobe. He's a good friend of mine and never did anything bad to me. And he certainly set me up a lot of times on the court. Kobe did kind of open up this season and hang out with the fellas some, so that did kind of help smooth things out some."

But things with Bryant seem as rocky as ever these days and they figure to only get worse with the December schedule about to grow teeth.

The Lakers ended their two-game losing streak Tuesday against Minnesota, but games against Denver, Golden State (twice), San Antonio and the cross-town Clippers loom before a four-game swing to the East Coast. Then, L.A. gets a Christmas Day rematch against a scorned Phoenix team.

Don't be surprised if this Kobe situation gets worse before it gets better. The Lakers have few desirable parts and they aren't going to become a contender to Bryant's liking anytime soon.

So Bryant's checking out on the Lakers could come any day now – if it hasn't happened already.

This is a BS story of yet another person trying to dissect Bryant and make something out of nothing! This man cant save them everynight,Damn! So let an ass whooping be just that. Plus, he didnt checkout the other night when he was ill at Minnesota and sucked it up (unlike some of his teammates) and carried them once again. Get off his back!

Just like life, we can do 50 things right but we would rather focus on the one perceived negative. Come on! This guy leaves it on the floor everynight and he sits out one practice and now you are questioning his commitment?! In the words of Iverson, Man we talking about practice!!

how can you say that after he played last night against Minnesota with the flu. If he gave up on the team, wouldn't you think that he woulda used that as an excuse not to play.

Is it possible that what we are witnessing with Kobe Bryant is actually a dimunition of skills? He is a relatively young man, but he has been banging at this level for almost half his age and it is possible that they are begining to take an effect on him physically and psychologically. Maybe he is no longer as good as we think he is and or maybe, the competition is actually catching up to him

I believe it’s a lack of respect (and professionalism) to express an opinion about a player without information, because you are here to give, not your impression, but your professional analysis. I mean, you cover Orlando and your article was written just thinking in one practice in Orlando and also considering what you saw in a previous game in Utah. However you don’t have information, (you don’t witness) the Lakers day to day program. In addition, why you didn’t include in your analysis the following game when KB played with the same symptoms that sent a teammate (Andre Bynum) to the Hospital?. This was because that information was against your prejudice?

Guys, critical is fine, but the minute you resort to calling someone names or being degraded, the comments get removed.

This negative one sided column about Kobe's performances which completely omits all the positive aspects that Kobe brings to the table, is truy just hateful B.S. This B.S. column will recieve no respect from anyone that truly understands the game of basketball....Get a life dude!

I love the Lakers. I have three rings. Chicago is terrible. All other teams I go to will be gutted. Orlando has how many championships? 0. Zip. Nada. That's truth for ya. Stick to writing about your Magic and watch them fall in the first round.

Is there an itch to attack Kobe whenever possible? That said, the story is way off base and out of line. Are you kidding me?

Wow, one day he shoots too much, the next day he doesn't shoot enough. The Lakers lose, and you wonder if he's checked out. He plays with the stomach flu on Tuesday and the team wins. He injures his shoulder on Wednesday, comes back in the 4th to limit Iverson to 2 points, after AI had 49 in 3 quarters. He scores 12 points and the Lakers win. I don't think he's checked out...

Reading this article makes one question the author's depth of knowledge about the Lakers and how well they are playing. To lose to Utah and Orlando - two of the best teams in the NBA this year - does not forecast failure. Also, the statement "a Lakers team clearly on a collision course with stinking, rotten mediocrity" is absurd. In case you haven't noticed, the Lakers have the 2nd best perfoming bench in the entire league. Every player on the team is solid, with different players each game stepping up to support Kobe - the best player in the NBA. In fact, when Kobe is not on the floor the team generally will outperform their opponent. If the Lakers can just keep it close, Kobe can close out the game against any opponent - as evidenced by wins over Phoenix, Utah, Detroit and Denver. So, saying the Lakers are on a course with "stinking, rotten mediocrity" shows the author's lack of knowledge about what's really going on. The Lakers will be one of the surprise teams in the league and playoffs. Go Kobe and go Lakers!

This is bunk. Pure and simple. Just another person hating on Kobe for no reason. The man is hurt! Why jeopordize him becoming more injured in practice when you have a game that night - especially when that player is Kobe Bryant. His teammates and well as Phil Jackson have said time and time again this season about Kobe's committment to the team. And furthermore, in the game against the Nuggets last night, the commentators could NOT stop talking about Kobe's trust and pride in his up and coming young squad. They're only one medium sized piece away, that's more than the JJ in Atlanta, the Spaniard in Memphis or even the King in Cleveland can say. I've been a loyal reader of this site since somewhere around 1999 or 2000 and to be perfectly honest I cannot believe this onesided claptrap was even given its due by being printed.
