Reserve A Spot For Roy

Within a matter of hours the NBA will announce the All-Star reserves to play in New Orleans, and as of last night Brandon Roy was racking up some big votes.

"I think he's played well and this team has had so much success that I think he deserves it," LeBron James said of Roy. "I wished him well in getting down to All-Star weekend as a reserve."

With Portland's recent success and ascension in the Northwest Division, Roy's name is nearly slated as an All-Star reserve this season and certainly his numbers and Portland's resurgence out West makes his cadency understandable. With Thursday decision day, Roy's numbers will surely speak for him.

The reigning 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year is averaging 19.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.6 assists per game and Roy ranks second in scoring among sophomores, and is first in assists.

Yet LeBron James isn't the only one making a case for the second year guard.

"I talked to about four guys (other coaches) who said they were going to vote for Brandon and that he should be on the team," head coach Nate McMillan said before the Blazes lost a heartbreaker to Cleveland on Wednesday night.

"Now, I don't know how true that is. They could be blowing smoke, but he (Roy) convinced them that he should definitely be on the team. If you look at his numbers and look at the turnaround of this team, you've really got to consider that. You've got to."

Roy will also have some competition in reserve voting. Both New Orleans' Chris Paul and Baron Davis of Golden State are Roy's main competition. Paul is the home town hero and author of the Hornets feel good story this season, and Davis' numbers make him a viable candidate.

So does that mean it's a snub if Roy doesn't make it as a reserve?

"It just depends on who does," McMillan added.

"There are some other guys out there who are playing well too. And I think the guy is really competing against is Chris Paul because his team has the best record in the West right now.

"For me Davis, and their (Golden State's) record is not ours. Of course he's a had a pretty good year. But if you look at the numbers and you look at the record, which I think you should, nobody expected us to be here. But I don't think Baron should be in the running with what Brandon has done and what this team has done."

McMillan believes it comes down to Roy and Paul, and it would be considered a "snub" if Davis is New Orleans-bound instead.

"Yeah, I think so personally. You're talking about, they (Golden State) made the playoffs last year and people expected them to be back. Then you look, and this guy (Roy) was player of the week twice. He was the best in the West twice just a month ago and his team is flirting with first place."

On Wednesday, Roy (along with fellow Blazer LaMarcus Aldridge) was named to play in the Rookie-Sophomore Game at All-Star weekend and there were talks if Roy is voted in as a reserve as well, that he "could" see action in both games. But out of the two contests, only one of those games really matters.

"The thing is to get on the big stage," McMillan said flashing a grin.

Now we wait to see what stage Brandon Roy will be performing on.

While I'm still sick and tired of all the slobbering over Brandon Roy here by HW writers, I thought it was a well written piece. Also thanks for not bringing up Roy as an MVP candidate.

i've said it before and will say it again....we root for stories, not players or teams. we report what is being said around the league about teams, players, and on league wide issues. if they say, we write about it....that's basic reporting, not "slobbering".

besides....roy was just officially named a reserve for the west....so he must be doing something right.

Baron should not have been snubbed. Let roy play the rook/soph game and let Baron play the all star game. Oh well to late now and its going to be to bad for all the other teams that he has to face.Golden State Warriors/Baron Davis=no respect

Somehow only HW writers are "hearing" it then. The rest of the national media combined hasn't had ONE article stating that Brandon Roy is a top contender for MVP, let alone THE top contender.

Are you kidding me? And you call yourself a coach Mr.McMillan? Unbelievable. Its plain and simple, Byron Scott has a personal Vendetta against Baron Davis. Baron Davis has done more for the community both here in the bay and in New Orleans than ANY Blazer player including you coach McMillan, and even you Byron Scott. Take a good look in the mirror before you start criticizing the ONLY Renaissance Man in the NBA.

So I clearly write have an issue with HW having Roy as it's top MVP contender, let alone considered amongst the top contenders. And I clearly write that the other top sports sites don't include Roy in their top MVP contenders. Your response is to cite Jalen Rose's mentioning Roy in a large group of players that he lists after his group of top contenders. He lists Roy in a group that includes Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker. Clearly not actual MVP contenders. Roy's a great young player. Just let him be that and 3 years from now maybe he can be an MVP contender. And FYI, it's not just ESPN that doesn't include Roy in it's top MVP contenders. It's Sporting News and Sportsline also.

still grinding that axe i see.....apparently if espn doesn't say anything about it, it's not news worthy. but they did. so now what?....they have roy slated just outside the top 5 in the mvp running: " Blazers guard Brandon Roy showed he had a hot hand before the season began, pulling the No. 1 pick in the lottery draw. The Blazers have a built-in excuse to say, "Wait until next year," but he has been a great young leader." that's from january 21st.....so now everything is right in the world.

Baron Davis has better numbers across the board than Brandon Roy and his team has a better record. He gets more points, assists, rebounds, and steals. The stats and the record say Baron should be in there over Roy.

Okay idiots, the reason Roy is in the all-star game over Davis is that he IS the team leader on a team that is BETTER than Golden State. Roy is a fourth quarter player and has won several games by himself, the last time he played Roy he was basically worthless, and of course, Roy dominated him. Oh, he's not as streaky as Davis either.

You got some nerve calling us morons when you're the one incapable of understanding GS's .596 winning % is better than the Portland .578 one. Baron's lead his team to a better record and Baron has better stats. Game over son.
