Shaquille O'Neal's days as a member of the Miami HEAT are over.

HOOPWORLD's Tracy Graven reported Marion being dealt on Friday, after which HOOPSWORLD's Steve Kyler revealed he was being dealt to Miami for O'Neal. Now it's a done deal. The Phoenix Suns want to see if he might be able to do for them what he has done for the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami HEAT, and nearly did for the Orlando Magic. They want to know if he can help them win a championship.

O'Neal was in Phoenix this morning to take a physical, and is expected to be announced as the newest member of the Phoenix Suns this afternoon.

The question from Suns fans - and perhaps from Suns management - is whether or not Shaq can keep up with the pace that's become the Suns' trademark.

The answer is: it doesn't matter.

The Suns can win a ton of games in the regular season with their run-and-gun style of play. What they can't do is win a playoff series against their ultimate foes in the Western Conference: San Antonio and Dallas. They should also now be concerned that their division rivals on Kobe Bryant's side of the Staples Center have moved past them with the acquisition of Pau Gasol. Gasol's 24-point, 12-rebound debut with the Lakers on Tuesday night should solidify that worry.

What you have to have to win in the playoffs is a half court offense. Yes, you can run some, but teams like San Antonio are going to stop you from running. If you don't have a plan B, you're out, as the Suns know all to well. Having the option to use a front line of Amare Stoudemire and Shaquille O'Neal would seem - on paper - would seem to make the Suns to team no one wants to see in the playoffs. Naturally, Shaq's ongoing health issue could derail that plan before it gets off the ground, but if he's healthy you can bet Steve Nash will get him a steady diet of easy looks at the basket.

Does this make Phoenix the new favorite to win the West . . .and the 2008 NBA Championship? It remains to be seen, but the Suns have certainly served notice that the time to win is now. There's no next season with Shaq.

As a Laker fan, I'd be so happy if this trade happened. Shaq is now a pathetic shade of his old self, always injured, and can't run.

That's my first thought, as well. But then I think about Nash playing with him . . .and wonder . . .

Phoenix is making a big mistake. Shaq is done and is in the past. I think Phoenix management (GM Steve) is trying to match what the Lakers did the past week.

I agree, this is basically a reaction from Kerr to what the Lakers did a couple of days ago. And I also think this is a huge mistake for the Suns. Phoenix needs Shaq primarily for his interior defense, and I don't think Shaq now can guard Duncan or even Gasol.

You can bet that the owner of the Memphis Grizzlies is hoping that Kerr makes this trade. That will get him off the hotseat for making the dumbest trade of the week.

This is going to make the Pacific Division very interesting. Phoenix is about to mortage their future and championship dreams for a few days worth of media coverage... sad. KOBE-BYNUM-ODOM-GASOL (real deal) NASH-SHAQ-AMARE-HILL (real joke)

It's certainly a huge gamble. A $40 million gamble. Heads roll after this kind of deal turns out badly.

This is actually a good trade for the Suns...Boris Diaw, Raja Bell and Barbosa can replace Marion's scoring.. actually they can move Hill back to small forward..Now you have Shaq rebounding and commanding a double team which frees up Amare...Wow..with Nash's passing this team is DANGEROUS now.. The Heat got a nice combo with Marion and Wade.. Now they just gotta keep Haslem and get a REAL point and a center...

I'm sad for Shaq's legacy. It's never good for an all-time great to be traded multiple times. I think it's time for Shaq to retire.

I love the trade. You guys are forgetting alot.. 1) Shaq wont be the 1st or 2nd option.. its still nash and amare 2) Phoenix hasnt won w/ marion at the 4 and amare @ the 5.. so time ot change it up.. who u gonna go get Ben Wallace, Kwame.. yea zip it 3)Shaq may not have a full tank, but he still gots half a tank and can he guard duncan, gasol no.. but can amare? No thats why they have been killed by the spurs in the past. But one you shaq on of them and if they manage to get by you have AMARE Help side.. b/c its a team game... and when shaq is hot comanding a double team everybody will spot up beyond the arc & amare will have the paint to work.. or when nash drives in the lane Shaq or Amare will have a one way ticket to Dunk City via the ally oop. Over All.. Good Trade.. Shaq will go out on top in the END..

This is a desperate move by Phoenix. When Bynum is back he will be all over Shaq. Bynum will wear him out. Shaq will still be much stronger, but stronger doesn't help you if you guy is half a court away from you.

It's a bold move, to be certain. With big gambles sometimes come big successes . . .but sometimes big losses. The real downside is the money they owe Shaq. They were going to move Marion anyway and Banks had no role in Phoenix. At the end of the day, the Suns' window was closing and they're hoping Shaq can prop it open just long enough for them to squeak out a title.

Does anyone remember the Wizards game when Brendan Haywood was guarding Shaq straight up with no help or doubles? I do, because I believe Shaq eventually fouled out and had like eight points. And that was when Shaq was healthy! Shaq always believes that he can just make free throws when they count (which isn't true) and improve a team when he needs to, but that was about three years ago when he had that ability. He's gotten fatter, slower, more injury prone (because he's constantly out of shape), and he has always been pretty lazy. Let's just say that IF he helps Phoenix get their championship, he won't be able to pull his weight around there after. I really do like Shaq, but when you rely on your strength and physical abilities your entire career it's pretty clear to see what happens when they begin to fade. Oh yeah, any other NBA teams out there have no fear...just pick n roll using Shaq because he is always to slow/lazy to hedge the screen or help his teammate. You'll have a clear path or an easy jump shot.

The question becomes whether or not Shaq finds new energy and motivation in Phoenix - or if he's just done.
