For the Minnesota Timberwolves the lottery held true, giving them the third pick in the draft – exactly where their record had left them when the regular season ended. On one hand having the third pick is a bit of a blessing since they obviously have many holes to fill.
On the other hand, this year having #3 only assures the Wolves won't be going home from the June draft with Michael Beasley or Derrick Rose.
With Al Jefferson and Randy Foye the Wolves will likely not pay any attention whatsoever to the point guard spot or the center position. Instead, they will look for a player who can create his own shot by driving to the hoop, hopefully opening up the inside a bit more for Jefferson and giving the team another option defenses must respect.
So who is that? Is it USC's O.J. Mayo? Indiana's Eric Gordon? Both players would be decent, but Mayo has a couple inches on Gordon (and Arizona's Jerryd Bayless) so if the Wolves do go the wing scorer route he would look to be the better fit. Plus, his work ethic is said to be tremendous – and no, whatever did or did not happen with him at USC with regards to BDA Sports and getting money will not play into anyone's draft considerations. Mayo is a solid kid, wants to be great, and is willing to put in the work.
The other intriguing option for the Wolves could be Stanford's Brook Lopez. Yes, they have Jefferson in the middle, but that's not necessarily his natural position. Moving him back to power forward – the position where he was drafted – and adding a beast like Lopez next to him in the middle would give the Wolves a very daunting frontline. If 2007 lottery pick Corey Brewer is with them, adding some defense to the offensive bents of Jefferson and Lopez, so much the better.
Things can quickly change in the next month before the June draft, but as of today Mayo and Lopez have to be the leaders in the clubhouse to be chosen number three by the Wolves. Either player mixed in with Jefferson, Foye and Brewer give the Wolves a solid nucleus to grow with.
