For every team that celebrates on draft night there are fans that go to bed questioning their team's decision. This year is no different, and some draft-night surprises were downright ugly. Here were the big losers on draft night 2008:
Charlotte Bobcats. Charlotte had one "big" mission coming into this draft – to come away with a starting center so they can move Emeka Okafor to power forward. They ended up passing on Brook Lopez with the 9th overall pick, opting instead for D.J. Augustin. Don't get me wrong, Augustin is a talented player, but there were other options for a point guard later on in the draft. They ended up taking Alexis Ajinca, a center that will need time to develop his frame and strength before he can be a presence in the NBA.
New York Knicks. While D'Antoni's perspective that Gallinari has a chance to turn into a star in the league is warranted, the Knicks absolutely need a point guard that can organize and run this team on the floor. After the draft, the bottom line is that they still don't have one. As talented as Gallinari is, the Knicks will continue to struggle – even, and perhaps especially, in D'Antoni's system – as long as they lack a floor general to focus the talent on the court.
Sacramento Kings. Jason Thompson is not a bad player, but he was not worth the 12th pick in this draft. Even if the Kings loved him, they could have gotten him much further down in the first round, if not the start of the second. Chances are he has a future as a solid contributor, not a star player. While the Kings needed size, which Thompson does have, they also needed value at this spot, and they didn't get it.
Houston Rockets. It was surprising that they didn't draft a guard, but even more surprising they passed on Donte Green and chose Nicolas Batum instead. It seems as though Green is just a much better version of their second-round selection, Maarty Leunen, a small forward that is a perimeter scorer. If they were looking to add interior toughness, defense and rebounding, drafting Batum won't be the answer they need – he needs to be more aggressive underneath and learn to use his body more effectively. Of course, then they traded Batum to Portland for Darrell Arthur and Joey Dorsey, then traded Arthur to Memphis for Green. All that just to pick up Dorsey as well?
Washington Wizards. The top men in Washington must really believe they will sign Jamison and Arenas. They chose the legitimate 7-footer JaVale McGee with their top pick (number 18 overall). What is not clear here is how he is any better than Koufos or even D.J. White. The latter are players the Wizards could've counted on to come onto the floor and rebound, adding in some scoring from the post. McGee might eventually be a good player, but right now, there were more certain, NBA-ready options available.
