With several NBA teams set to unveil new uniforms for next season, HOOPSWORLD decided to make the foray into fashion by judging which teams have the best designs for their jerseys.

Although the extent of this particular writer's fashion acumen is the occasional viewing of Project Runway, it isn't hard to see how NBA jerseys have evolved in recent years with more prominent block lettering and basic trim. The days of the jersey variety provided by quirky eccentricities have ended, as we say goodbye to each team's unique take on what to emblazon upon their uniforms.

A quick trip down nostalgia lane, for better or worse, before moving on to the best of today's league. Remember those...

- Purple Phoenix Suns jerseys with the blazing basketball streaking across the chest?
- Pinstriped Chicago Bulls jerseys?
- Multi-colored Denver Nuggets jerseys with the skyline and Rocky Mountains?
Detroit Pistons jerseys with the horsepower represented with exhaust pipes (and a horse)?
- Cartoon animals or fonts prominently displayed on the chest of the the mid-90s Atlanta Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies, and Toronto Raptors uniforms?

In any case, it's time to move on from the past and take a look at what teams are doing now. The best maintain sense of their own identity in their duds, never lost among the fray.

Keeping it Simple

There's something to be said about a classic look that never really changes. Four teams in particular have seemed to embrace that concept, the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs.

Quite literally the gold standard, the Lakers are the only team that doesn't wear white at home (except on Sundays), combining gold with the "forum blue" (aka purple) to create a truly iconic look. The team hasn't changed the overall look of the uniforms for good reason, except for changing the shape of the shoulder straps.

As the team with the most championships in the league, the Boston Celtics have kept as simple as they can when it comes to their jerseys. Some may say it's plain to have an austere "CELTICS" spread across the chest, but there certainly is something charming to the crisp and clean white and green, isn't there? The team has occasionally threw in a shamrock or introduced black here and there, but the old-school staple is still the winning formula.

Could one of the NBA's most fundamental players, Tim Duncan, play in a more fundamentally sound uniform? The Spurs have stuck to the unfussy black and silver combination for years and are one of the few teams still using the tank-top style rather than the broad-shouldered version most teams use now. The logo is simple but unique to the team and it's Texas roots and the team avoids making things busy.

The Portland Trail Blazers have basically maintained the same logo and jersey since their inception in the 1970s, and with good reason. The team's logo is one of the most unique in the league and has a great trivia behind it: the logo is a representation of two basketball teams lined up against each other, five-on-five in opposite colors (there's always red for the Blazers and the other five are either black, silver, or white for the other team). The team has kept the logo and maintained the "blaze" two-toned diagonal on the jersey since winning the championship in 1977.

A Refreshed Look

One of the nicer newer jerseys is the one the Cleveland Cavaliers introduced after drafting LeBron James in 2003. The updated look served as a bit of an homage to Cavs teams in the past, hearkening back to the squad's original wine and gold colors of the 70s while also maintaining a hint of blue to honor some of the success the team achieved in the 90s, when orange and blue were the primary colors.

Plus, anything is better than the "tiger stripe" black and light blue uniforms of the mid-90s.

Truly Retro

The NBA's "Hardwood Classic" nights are fan favorites for the opportunity to see jerseys from the teams' fashion history. By far the best retro jerseys, though, are those of the Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors.

Before moving to a primary red color in the mid-70s, the Hawks briefly featured a weird green and blue combo in the early 70s. The blue road jerseys in particular, though, were a great look (the green? Not so much). You may recall the players' named being beneath their numbers .. and Pete Maravich simply having "PISTOL" written for his.

Widely considered the best NBA jersey ever, though, is the Golden State Warriors' "The City" uniforms. The team donned these in mid-to-late-60s and the look is still great for today's Bay Area franchise, with a cable car (housing the numbers) on the back and a bridge prominently displayed on the front. With "The City" on the front, the Warriors jersey itself screamed confidence, perfectly capturing the unique Bay Area flavor on the jersey. A bonus? Like many college teams, the original jersey did not include player names, making the uniform literally more about "the crest on the chest than the name on the back."

I agree, the Warriors "The City" Jerseys have to be the best jerseys ever made. Classic look and style that will not be out-dated. The only jersey that may be better would be the Warriors Hardwood Classic jerseys that came out during the 07-08 season, with a picture of the Golden State on the front.

Team USA's jerseys have names they just happen to be the names just happen to be the same color as the jerseys.

I feel you on the old suns jerseys but i was definitely more partial to the black ones. You also gotta give the old blue, pinstriped magic jerseys

The 76ers of Julius Erving & George McGinnis. The ABA's Nets (also Dr. J's timeframe). The Suns in the late 60s (the blazing sun on the side of the shorts instead of stripes).

I think the Miami Heat have played it pretty conservatively over the years. I think they should change the colors used in the arena, and on their jersey. Maybe stick to red, black and gray/orange

Whooo! Go Warriors! Best jersey in NBA history!

There's definitely a lot of other great old school jerseys - some great, some just plain hideous. I think the 90s were a time of just trying to come up with some weird stuff (remember the Rockets' pinstripes with the angry Rocket flying around the basketball?). Yea, the Sixers' older jerseys were pretty cool and anything from the ABA was a reflection of 70s smoothness.

This list cannot be complete without mention of the old school laker blue and white jersey with the cursive los angeles lettering. I wish they would bring that one back hasnt been seen since the 04 season.

Would have been great if you had posted pics of the jerseys or links to pics of the jerseys. Have no idea where to look for all those jerseys you mentioned and would love to see them.

dyeyk2000 - Check back soon and I'll have links up to the photos of some of those old jerseys! Great suggestion.

I think those old Alex English era rainbow colored skyline Denver Nuggets jerseys were cool. I guess they were cooler back then before the rainbow colors came to symbolize something more John Amaechi than Kiki Vandeweghe.

As much as I loath the Celtics I will concede that I am envious of the fact that they've done close to nothing to their jersey and logo over the years. It gives continuity to the different generations of Celtics fans. It's something familiar that young and old can relate to. I pretty much hate most NBA jerseys today. They've forsaken history for merchandising. I'm a Pistons fan and you can imagine my elation when they went back to the red, white and blue. Although I'd prefer they wear the exact same unis (which a modern shorts length as the Bad Boys) I'll take what I can get.

I like your assessment on all the jersey's. The Spurs have a very nice Silver retro jersey that they don't use very often. I wish they would wear it but it's my understanding that Timmy doesn't like the silver look. I think they look very slick!

The present Rockets' uniforms and symbol are pretty tight. They were designed by Eiko Ishioka, who won an Academy Award for Costume Design in the 1993 Dracula movie. I think the prior blue pajamas were kinda tacky -- probably inspired by all of the other teams getting cartoonish logos.

The Mavs "alternate" jerseys are some of the best in the league imo.

i am a hard-core laker fan but i think denvers jersey should be one of the best their baby blue jerseys and the alternative navy blue jersey is awesome anyone agree?

Definitely gotta give the old magic black pinstripes from the days of Anfernee Hardaway some love. They were some good looking jerseys.

Yea I am definitely glad the Cavs moved on to a new style Jersey, because the 90s stuff was just odd. I must say though, the retro orange ones, for some reason I love those jersey's although most other fans in Cleveland hate them. I think they have some different looking uniforms this year, cant wait

the new new orleans jerseys look terrible. i dont understand why they are getting new jerseys anyway- they claim its a rebirth but arent they a little bit late. They want to start a new atmosphere after they win a franchise record games? I like the new timberwolves jerseys though- much more modern. the old ones looked so old and tacky.

I personally like the powdered blue Denver Nuggets and the Lakers home white jerseys the best. The alternate colors of the Honets, Warriors, and Suns are pretty nice too. I think the worst jersey ever made is the Washington Wizards alternate (gold and white top with black, blue-ish shorts). What were they thinking?

anybody remember the 76ers blue jerseys? Also the red new jersey nets and detroit pistons are cool

What is up with the feminine neckline of NBA jerseys? Celtics and Spurs have masculine jerseys. As David Letterman said referring to the Lakers uniforms (necklines) "They look like dental hygienists." Old school stil best!

I love the old suns sun with black, and defiantly lovin' the old 70s warriors. I'm also a fan of the 70s-mid 80s jazz. But I think the best probably is the vancouver grizzlie:)

I think the best cheap jerseys are the throwbacks. They have the classic look and style but are still simple. Some throwbacks look like cheap jerseys but the city original jerseys are the best design without looking too plain. Thanks for the link (http://www.cityoriginal.com). They have awesome prices on cheap NBA jerseys. I will keep representing the city and the warriors. The best team in the NBA!
