Andre Iguodala escapes drama with Warriors

LAS VEGAS — When Andre Iguodala reunited with his former boss, Masai Ujiri, in the Cox Pavilion stands at NBA summer league this week, it was a reminder of what could have been for the Denver Nuggets.
These were the two biggest stars of the rising team that is no more, the player who had helped the Nuggets reach new heights saying hello to the shrewd general manager whose departure for the Toronto Raptors sparked a radical makeover.
The changes continued when George Karl was fired soon thereafter, as he had pushed for an extension after being named the NBA’s coach of the year.
Then came the situation with Iguodala, who opted out of the final year of his contract and joined the Golden State Warriors, the team that knocked the Nuggets out in the first round of the playoffs after they had won a franchise-record 57 games.
After Iguodala and Ujiri shared well wishes before parting ways again, Iguodala acknowledged it might have all turned out differently if all of the pieces had stayed in place.
“No question,” he told USA TODAY Sports when asked if Ujiri’s departure played into his decision to leave. “It definitely had an effect on it, so who knows?
“He and I, we definitely had a connection. But Masai got a great opportunity from a place he used to be (in Toronto). Then with the Coach Karl situation, that was between him and ownership.
“Being he had one year left on his deal and the whole contract thing, the extension, the way things unfolded, I wasn’t surprised.
“That’s becoming a theme with coaches in their last year: Can they get the extension, or will they coach out that last year? That was the battle, because he had so much weight — I shouldn’t say power — but weight, with his history and how good of a coaching record he has.”
Iguodala is more than happy with how it all turned out for him, as he went to the Warriors via sign-and-trade on a four-year, $48 million deal that could help move them higher in the Western Conference.
