Toronto Raptors forward-center Andrea Bargnani is expected to miss the rest of the season with an avulsion sprain of the right elbow, the team announced Wednesday.
Bargnani left the game against the Los Angeles Lakers with 3:08 left in the first quarter on Friday and did not return. The Raptors said the injury is not related to a previous right elbow injury that sidelined him for 26 games earlier this season.
Bargnani, who has not developed into the player Toronto thought he could become, has appeared in 35 games this season, averaging just 12.7 points and 3.7 rebounds and shooting 40% – all off his marks of the past three seasons when he averaged 19.2 points and 5.7 rebounds and shot 45.4%. Since returning on Feb. 6, Bargnani has averaged 7.6 points and 2.6 rebounds.
It has been a tough season for Bargnani who has struggled, been blamed for Toronto’s problems and was a strong trade possibility until he injured his right elbow the first time n December.
With Bargnani off the court, the Raptors, who are 25-39 and in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, score more points and allow fewer points per 100 possession than when he is one the court.
Bargnani signed a five-year, $50 million deal in 2009 and has two years remaining on the contract, which will pay him $10.75 million in 2013-14 and $11.5 million 2014-15.… [For more on Andrea Bargnani done for the year with elbow injury, click here.]
