Davis hopes knee injury isn’t serious

SACRAMENTO — When it comes to this NBA season and the injuries that have put a cloud over it, the worst-case scenario has, for the most part, been the one that always seems to win out.
It’s the player, and the fans of course, who lose big in the process.
Golden State’s Brandon Rush, Boston’s Rajon Rondo, Atlanta’s Lou Williams and Denver’s Danilo Gallinari were the newest members of the torn ACL club, with Minnesota’s Ricky Rubio returning from the one he suffered last season and Chicago’s Derrick Rose still working his way back.
So as New Orleans’ Anthony Davis lie there on the Sleep Train Arena floor midway through the fourth quarter on Wednesday night, rocking back and forth with that look of agony while clutching his left knee, it was only natural to assume the worst.
Did the top draft pick, the runner-up Rookie of the Year in most critics’ estimations, tear his ACL when he was leveled in the lane by the Sacramento Kings’ Marcus Thornton? There’s no clarity just yet, but the Hornets — who are deeming it a left knee sprain — are optimistic that Davis was the rare exception to this brutal 2012-13 rule.
Davis, who was knocked over and then landed on by Thornton, will undergo tests in New Orleans on Thursday. He limped off the floor under his own power during the game, then walked slowly out of the arena afterward without assistance. Hornets coach Monty Williams was cautiously optimistic about Davis’ prognosis.
“(Davis) said he’s a little sore,” said Williams, whose Hornets fell 121-110 to the Kings. “I’m just glad it wasn’t a buckle or a ligament or anything like that at least. You don’t know that for sure, but usually when somebody lands on it, it could be a contusion. It’s probably more scary than anything else, but we’ve got to let the doctors check him out and make sure. He’s walking around. He’s got ice on it.
