New Orleans Hornets rookie guard Austin Rivers will miss 4-6 weeks with a fractured fourth metacarpal bone in his right hand.
Rivers was hurt in the first half of New Orleans’ 108-102 loss Wednesday to the Los Angeles Lakers. He jammed his hand on teammate Greivis Vasquez’s body after making a steal that started a fastbreak. He left the game with 4:28 left in the second quarter and did not return.
It’s possible the injury ends Rivers’ rookie season, which has been a struggle for the former Duke star and son of Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers.
Rivers is shooting 37.2% from the field, 32.6% on three-pointers, 54.6% on free throws and averaging 6.2 points and 2.1 assists.
However, he had begun to show improvement, especially with his jump shot, in the past month. Since Feb. 1, Rivers shot 49.5% from the field and 42.9% on three-pointers.
Rivers, the 10th-overall pick in last June’s NBA draft, had 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the first half, helping the Hornets build a lead of 25 points on the Lakers in the second quarter. But they could not hold on for a win.… [For more on Austin Rivers to miss 4-6 weeks with broken bone in hand, click here.]
