Phoenix Suns forward Michael Beasley was cited by Scottsdale, Ariz. police late last month after he was pulled over on suspicion of speeding, driving on a suspended Arizona license, and driving without a vehicle license plate or registration, police said.
Beasley was stopped on suspicion of driving 71 mph in a 45 mph speed-limit zone on Scottsdale Road near Doubletree Ranch Road on Jan. 25, shortly after 1 a.m., according to a Scottsdale police report.
Police said the vehicle, a Mercedes 4-door sedan, also had no license plate or temporary registration tag.
During the stop, Beasley, 24, was cooperative with police, according to the report, and produced a Florida driver’s license. However, a check by police found Beasley’s Arizona driving privileges had been suspended Oct. 23 for failing to appear in Phoenix City Court. Details of that court appearance were not specified in the report.
Beasley was asked if he had any firearms in his vehicle and he told the officer that had a gun in the center arm rest in the back seat, police said. According to the report, the gun was a Taurus .45 caliber with one bullet loaded in the chamber.
Beasley told the officer that he had no proof of registration because he was waiting for a new one in the mail, the report said.
Beasley had two other passengers with him at the time of the stop by police. Their identities were not released.
According to the report, the Suns player initially was handcuffed and placed under arrest, but then cited for the multiple traffic violations and released at the scene. His car was impounded and he was ordered to appear in court Feb. 11.
According to police, after he was released at the scene, Beasley and his passengers walked toward his house, which was in the area.
The Suns released the following statement on Feb. 4:
