Bernie Bickerstaff, who has 14 years of NBA coaching experience under his belt, will take over as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers on an interim basis, the team announced.
Bickerstaff, 68, was an assistant to Mike Brown, who was fired just five games into his second season as the Lakers coach.
His last head coaching position was with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2006-07. His other coaching jobs were in Seattle, Denver and Washington. He has a record of 415-517 and his best regular season was with the Sonics in 1988-89, when his team was 47-35.
In 1987, his Sonics were 39-43 and finished seventh in the Western Conference, but got hot in the playoffs, beating the Dallas Mavericks in the first round, (3-1), the Houston Rockets in the conference semifinals (4-2), before falling to the eventual champion Lakers 4-0 in the conference finals.
