John Marinatto has resigned as commissioner of the Big East Conference. According to reports, he was asked to resign on Sunday night.

Marinatto succeeded Mike Tranghese as commissioner in 2009. A former athletic director at Big East member Providence, his alma mater, Marinatto saw member schools Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Syracuse make plans to leave the conference during his tenure, and oversaw the process that will bring Temple, Central Florida, Houston, Memphis, and SMU to the Big East in 2013. Boise State and San Diego State will also join as football-only members in 2013, with Navy doing the same in 2015.

Joe Bailey, a former CEO of the Miami Dolphins, will serve as interim commissioner while a new permanent commissioner is found.
