Big East still viable, commish says

CROMWELL, Conn. — Big East commissioner Mike Aresco says the conference is looking to add another school, and might sign a TV deal with multiple networks.

Aresco, speaking at a local chamber of commerce breakfast Monday, says the Big East wants to keep its name as it rebrands, and wants to add one school to give it 12 playing football and basketball after Navy joins the league in 2015.

“This is a great group of core schools,” he said. “I predict a bright future.”

He says he believes the conference realignment picture might be settling down and that the Big East would not expand west of Texas.

Aresco, a former executive at ESPN and CBS Sports, also said he hopes deals can be worked out to keep traditional conference rivalry games intact even after the so-called Catholic seven schools leave the Big East to form their own basketball league.
