Billups back to right Pistons’ wrong

Funny how things work out.
Five years ago, Joe Dumars had a brain freeze and traded Chauncey Billups.
A. The stupidest thing in the history of mankind because it sent the Pistons into a tailspin;
B. Or it was the stupidest thing in the history of mankind because Dumars should have done it sooner;
C. Or it was the stupidest thing in the history of mankind if you forget drafting Darko, and signing Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva, and hiring (insert name of your least favorite Pistons coach here, although, granted, that’s a tough decision).
But, then, something funny happened. The Pistons brought back Mr. Big Shot, and Trader Joe was quick to admit it was a mistake to get rid of Billups when he did. “Without a doubt,” Dumars said Tuesday. “If I had to do it all over again, absolutely not. I never would have made that move with him.”
Oh, but you know what they say.

So now Billups is back. He’s 36, and he has a lot more miles on his sneakers, but he comes relatively cheap, and he has a two-year deal. So when this contract is done, he probably will retire a Piston and then move into the front office and become, as he said, a “Piston for life.”
But that’s getting ahead of ourselves. He still has some games left in him.
“Like Joe said, I’m really not good with, ah, with losing and mediocrity,” Billups said. “I’m not coming here to just mentor and coach. I’m coming to try to win. I’m looking forward to it.”
One thing is certain, the Pistons look entirely different from when Billups used to play here.
Now the Pistons have a new coach and a new core of young players; and they have expiring contracts and several pieces they could use to trade for a player like — let’s pull a name out of thin air — someone like Rajon Rondo from the Boston Celtics.
And they just signed Josh Smith who, it should be noted, is good friends with Rondo.
