Blazers’ Matthews ‘In A Bad Place Mentally’

“I don’t really believe in odds,’’ Blazers guard Wesley Matthews said. “Because I have defied them most of my life.’’
But there Matthews was earlier this week, storming out of the Blazers’ locker room after a 102-97 loss to Memphis, threatening to succumb to those damn odds.
“I was in a bad place mentally, I really was,’’ Matthews recounted. “I went to a bad place.’’
Normally, he could snap out of a funk after a loss by a phone call from his mom, or a text from a friend. Even a little thing, like listening to Blackstreet Radio on Pandora could lift his spirits. But on his way home, he didn’t turn his phone on, and he left the stereo off.
“That night, I couldn’t get out of it. I couldn’t look past that my family is going to text me and tell me that they love me. I couldn’t get past that I’m hopping into a brand new Range Rover to drive home,’’ Matthews said. “I just got so frustrated. Because we are so good. It’s right there in front of us, almost like it’s there for the taking, then we lay an egg and lose a game that we should have won. I was almost to the point of saying ‘I don’t know if this playoff thing is going to happen.’’’
