Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim received a vote of confidence from the school’s chancellor on Tuesday.

“Coach Boeheim is our coach,” Syracuse Chancellor Nancy Cantor said Tuesday.

Cantor made the decision to fire longtime assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine on Sunday night in the wake of sex-abuse allegations leveled against him.

Boeheim, a Hall of Famer, had been among the most vocal supporters of Fine, going say far as to label the accusers “liars” until an audio tape surfaced Sunday in which Fine’s wife, Laurie, appeared to acknowledge her husband’s illicit behavior.

In a statement Sunday night, Boeheim said he believed the university took the “appropriate step” in dismissing Fine.

There have been some calls for Boeheim’s ouster, but Cantor’s remarks appear to have defused that notion.

“We’re very pleased with what he said Sunday night, and we stand by him,” Cantor said.

The Orange will take the court for the first time since Fine’s firing when they host Eastern Michigan on Tuesday night.
