At the water cooler: As if Andy Enfield’s life couldn’t get any better. The guy’s married to a former supermodel, has a beautiful family, just coached his team to one of the most memorable Cinderella runs to date and to top it all off has an offer likely still on the table to party with Taco Bell. Well, Enfield’s life just got better. Or worse, depending on which way you look at it.
The pilot for Dunk City at Florida Gulf Coast just landed a Dunk City payoff by notching a job at Southern California as the school’s new coach. We’ve seen this type of thing happen before — mid-major coaches who orchestrate storybook seasons shine in the spotlight for BCS school ADs to see and subsequently land a big offer from a much bigger, more prominent school. The same situation happened last year when John Groce became Illinois’ new coach after Ohio’s Sweet 16 finish.
Of course, Enfield’s star power is more notable. Whether he’s a hero or a bust at USC is yet to be determined, although it will be talked about plenty. It’s fascinating to realize how life-changing one NCAA tournament victory can be. Sure, the Georgetown and San Diego State wins were the ones we’ll be talking about in 50 years. But what about the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship? Cinderella has to get to the Dance first. FGCU and Enfield certainly help put that into perspective.
