Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said his team’s thrilling 104-101 victory over Louisville in five overtimes sadly “only counts as one Big East win.”

It felt like much more than one game Saturday night.

The Irish (19-5, 7-6 Big East) and Cardinals (19-5, 7-4) staged one of the longest and most exciting games in college basketball this season, spanning over 3 hours and 40 minutes and rivaling a six-overtime Big East clash between Syracuse and Connecticut in 2009. It was the longest Big East game in regular-season history.

“We got over 100 because we played an extra game,” Brey said on ESPN after the game. “We were awesome. It was fun.”

Indeed. Both teams essentially played two games. The first half of regulation was merely an appetizer for the main course the five overtimes turned out to be.

Here’s a breakdown:

Fifth overtime: Cameron Biedscheid scored on a layup with 1:19 left, and Eric Atkins and Pat Connaugton added free throws in the final 19 seconds. Russ Smith had a chance to tie it, but his 3-point attempt missed before Notre Dame students flooded the court to celebrate.

-Both teams missed crucial free throws in the final minute. Atkins missed two with 37 seconds left and Montrezi Harrell did the same for Louisville with 24 seconds left.

-Jerian Grant, who fouled out with 1:57 left in the first overtime, led the Irish with 19 points.

-Chane Behanan had 30 points and 15 rebounds for Louisville.
