The Brooklyn Nets have fired coach Avery Johnson, the team announced on Thursday.

Johnson was in his third season with the team, but the Nets’ 14-14 start was clearly not enough in light of the increased expectations that came this season.

The Nets revamped their roster for their first season in Brooklyn, re-signing point guard Deron Williams and small forward Gerald Wallace while also landing veteran shooting guard Joe Johnson in a trade with Atlanta. After starting this season 11-4, they have lost 10 of their last 13 games.

Johnson was the NBA coach of the month for October and November.

According to a person with knowledge of the team’s plans, Nets assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo will be named the team’s interim coach. The person requested anonymity because the decision had not yet been announced.
