Brooklyn wants Phil Jackson for coach

The Brooklyn Nets may not land their dream candidate, but they’re going to try.
After the first-round playoff series loss to the Chicago Bulls that led to interim coach P.J. Carlesimo being shown the door, a person with knowledge of the team’s hiring strategy confirmed that the Nets have reached out to Phil Jackson about the vacancy. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the coaching search.
The two sides have played phone tag at this point, and it remains a longshot that the Nets will get Jackson, in large part, because the fit might not be right. It’s no secret that Jackson wants to return to the league in a different capacity than before, when he won 11 championships with the Bulls and Lakers from the bench.
He sees himself in more of managerial role – perhaps as a consultant – than he does handling the daily grind of coaching. The Nets have a hands-on owner in Mikhail Prokhorov, a recently extended general manager in Billy King, and an $85 million roster featuring Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Brook Lopez and the rest that is hardly ripe for remaking.
But should Jackson pass on the opportunity, one of the other guys the Nets are reaching out to could provide precisely what they are seeking: Indiana Pacers assistant Brian Shaw. The same person with knowledge of the Nets’ plans also confirmed he is on the list.
The longtime Lakers assistant who came up under Jackson has been next in line to be a head coach for quite some time. He’s a rare mix of offensive creativity (he is well-versed in both the run-and-gun ‘Showtime’ ways from his playing days and the ‘Triangle’ that he coached for several years) and defensive know-how (the Pacers showed their defensive stature in Game 1 against the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals).
